I have not eaten there yet. Or, I have yet to visit that fine establishment. Do you seen wut I be talking to?

Godamit.

That is not very good English. You might want to stay away from texting lingo, posters on here are not very fond of that. Just a heads up.

What's that one restaurant right by campus that Chef Gordon Ramsey and Kitchen Nightmares went to to fix up????

It was J. Willy's in the old Damon's building. Closed not long after being on Kitchen Nightmares, probably almost 2 years ago. It was pretty good though.

I knew I could count on you. Here's another one: H.I.'s in Niles. Again, it was a long time ago that I visited that place, but the experience was fantastic. Choo choo train running around the restaurant on the track near the ceiling. Great food, great atmosphere, and stunning lady next to me. We finished off the evening spending the night at Lake Michigan.

Oaken Bucket and H.I.'s. Two of the best nights of my life. And then I was back in the desert.

The train and million lights are gone. But the food is still excellent with a good patio and large bar. two thumbs up

Barnabys pizza, but if your going to do brunos you should try the one with the lunch buffet. Marks was always my favorite chinese downtown but i think it might have closed down.

Stll open, went there last Christmas with the family. Had Bailey's and coffee for the first time there. I love taking the tour of the house. A nice little mystique comes with it.

its not H.I.'s anymore. its Riverfront Cafe. Golden nugget has good pub grub. the best burger north of the border (niles) is at "the tavern", used to be Mark's Bar way back. Killer food and great drink prices. a little small but that or Cosmo and Suzies (excellent Italian) is where pops and i head after the game.

other faves:
Hacienda--bar none best chips and salsa
C.J.'s is a good burger
Macri's--the Godfather sandwich is legendary
Bruno's pizza is the best slice in south bend
Hana Yori for hibachi
Main St. Pub is good pub grub too.

Chips, salsa, and drinks...yes. Everything else, no. My opinion anyways. I know you said just chips and salsa, but just thought I would throw out the other stuff.

That isn't salsa, it's closer to ketchup. Ugh. Gotta at least ask for the Salsa Verda to be able to choke it down.

i like its simplicity. a couple tomatoes, some tomato paste, a couple jalepenos...blend. BOOM.
authentic? no. but very tasty. maybe its nostalgic for me. my buddies and i used to ditch 4th period and drive down to hacienda for lunch a couple times a year. those were the days....

I use to love Hacienda, especially when I was younger. My family use to always go there. As I got older and tried different Mexican Restaurants around South Bend. Then I got stationed down south and since moved to Texas. The food at Hacienda just does not taste that good at all, to me anyways.

Speaking of salsa though, I just got done making homemade salsa. Taste rather delicious, hot *** hell though. Made it with habanero peppers, diced tomatoes, and green chiles.

A Mexican restaurant that is good in South Bend is Maztalan. It has moved since I remember the last time I went there, but it is very good.

A place in Granger. "Eddie's Steak Shed." Nothing real fancy, but some of the best steaks to be had around here, and they don't rape you in price like Ruth's Chris. I always get the "sirloin for two" for me, and let the wife fend for herself. Great garlic sauteed mushrooms, pretty good basic selection of beers and wines and liquor. My favorite around here.

Hacienda isn't that bad. You just have to remember that it's not authentic Mexican food.

As for the salsa debate, there was this Mexican lady who cleaned my office. She brought me in Mexican food all the time and one time she brought in salsa. It was also the same consistency as ketchup. It was not chunky and was rather tasty. I guess it just depends on your preference but the salsa at hacienda really isn't that bad. Could have more heat to it.

Bring your date to there and let her sip on the Margaritas. She won't even notice that it has alcohol in it. My wife hates alcohol but will slam down the Margaritas. Fun night had by all :)

Have you ever been to Polito's? That is hands down the best pizza in town. Roccos is amazing and i love the food, but Politos has one of, if not the, most authentic NY style pizza you will find in the midwest. Its amazing

03euro, folklore has it that the Margarita was first created by an El Pasoan working in Juarez. Fajitas originally were strap muscle that covers the belly of the cow, and it also was created in Texas. I can't believe how expensive fajitas are in restaurants, considering it uses cheap meat, although the term "fajita" has been Americanized to include chicken, shrimp, skirt steak, etc...

Salsa is a big letdown pretty much anywhere I go except Texas. Here in Cali, salsa is a bowl of chopped tomatoes with maybe some onion and cilantro tossed in. In Texas, salsa, or "chile" (Chee-leh, not Chilly) is often 90% jalapeno blended with either tomato bits, onions, and maybe some cilantro. It is GREEN. Pico de Gallo in Texas actually has real jalapeno chunks. Over there, you have to request the mild stuff. Here in Cali, you have to request the hot stuff. I'm sure others will beg to differ, but I know how to choose my Messican/Tessican restaurants.

There is flat out no better Messican food than in Texas/New Mexico, and of course, Mexico. Everywhere else is just experimenting.

Love it. I've never been to Texas besides for the Houston airport. I actually prefer a more Authentic Mexican restaurant than Hacienda. There are a couple that are decent around town. Still not Authentic compared to good home made Mexican meals.

i dont think ive been to either of those places. i will try it.

not sure if you guys have ever ventured north of niles to a little place called "pete's patio". awesome paper thin crust pizza box cut. all ingredients come in from chicago. its been the same pie since my parents were in high school (late 60's). the owner, pete, recently retired and a buddy of mine from high school bought it and kept everything the same. it is so good. i used to take friends from college or girlfriends not from the area there. everyone always loves it.

it used to be a "notre dame bar". it still is, but the guy that runs it now is a Michigan fan. so there is a little bias. i recommend it.
italian salad bowl
antipasta
bread basket
relish cart
large PMS (pepperoni, sausage, mushroom)
their sandwiches are amazing as well. i love the hot italian sausage and the italian beef.

Dont go to chain restaurants like Papa vinos and Wings etc.
Go to:
For mexican food, La Esperanza (on Ironwood) or Fiesta Tapetia (on mcKinley)

Pizza
Bruno's or Polito's although Polito's is the BEST.

Burgers
The Tavern in Niles MI
Between the Buns in South Bend

Also Barnaby's is good too.

Well now, there's a chuckle. Houston airport Mexican food.

True story; Last time I was in El Paso, I ordered a combo plate from a local corner restaurant (taco, enchilada, relleno, beans and rice) for a whopping 2.99. This was about 3 years ago. Here in SoCal, at an average dump, around the same time, I ordered a taco plate (1 taco, beans and rice) for frikken 10.99. Sure, you can order a 1 taco plate at other places here in Cali, but good luck finding it for less than 6 bucks. ONE FRIKKEN TACO!

You haven't been to Colorado, have you?

x2 on whoever brought up Mazatlan.

Been through Colorado - stopped in Denver, but cousin made hamburgers.

What's your point about Culo roto? I mean, Colorado? (I'm sure some spanish speakers get my culo roto joke...teehee).

Aside from tacos de carne molida (or picadillo), my other flat out favorite is Chile Colorado (Beef in red chile sauce, served with tortillas de harina.)

There are roughly two million Hispanic Arizonans that would strongly disagree with you.

Colorado has a very large immigrant and mexican descent population. We have great (ie authentic) mexican food. I have spent time in Texas and New Mexico, and the availability of qualty mex food is comparabe. Next time you scamper through Colorado, I will buy you a burrito and a real margarita.
