Brian Kelly: Irish need to beat SEC team - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly ventured into SEC country on Tuesday to speak to an alumni chapter in Huntsville, Ala. He didn't shy away from talking about that powerful league, either.

Though the Irish don't have any SEC teams on the schedule in the near future, Kelly said he hoped to play one in a BCS bowl this season.

"Notre Dame will be taken serious when they beat an SEC team," he said.

The last time the Irish played an SEC team, it wasn't pretty. They lost 41-14 to LSU in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. The last regular-season game against the SEC was in 2005, a 41-21 win over Tennessee at home. The year before, Notre Dame won 17-14 in Knoxville.

Notre Dame is 21-13 all time against the SEC, but recent games have been few and far between.

Kelly already made some fans in SEC land. As part of his trip, he donated $5,000 toward helping the victims of the recent tornadoes in Alabama.

Arkansas is a lower level SEC team? I think not. Maybe Im misunderstanding your post, but if that's what your saying.... you may just have sour grapes about living in Arkansas. They just played in the Sugar Bowl, and if not for five ineligible players, they would've won. They are also ranked in the top 15 to start this year and are lead by a pretty amazing college coach in Petrino.

I don't understand your statement, where do you get we play an sec team every other year in the BCS? Also not sure what you are calling lower sec teams, could you explain your comment.

I would just love to play an SEC team just because of all the hype it will get. Everyone will be talking about it. Just need to make sure ND comes to play! This year is exciting but 2012 is going to be unbelievable....Miami at Chicago-Oklahoma-Michigan-USC- anxious-

I hope Jack starts to talk to the SEC and gradually throws a game in the schedule every year. Get back to the old days of ND taking on anyone anywhere and good thing that is BKs motto also.

??? Yeah cause that's totally what Kelly said.

Does the title, "Board Jinx," mean anything to you KPenn?

Relax bro. This isn't the QB debate, for whose title I refuse to speak out of fear for awaking the sleeping dragons.

Tennessee, Georgia, or Florida would be cool. Alabama would be epic, but lets wait for the stars to align in a bowl.

As posted in the original thread on Kelly's comments in Alabama, http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football/60327-coach-kelly-al.html

Kelly lead the TV sports news on Alabama TV last night. They mentioned the the $5,000 donation but the focus was the quote about beating an SEC team. They showed him mentioning how difficult it was to schedule with ND's regular opponents and league schedules.

Of course they didn't mention that ND and Alabama had a home and home contract for '05 & '06 that Alabama asked to be let of after their last NCAA sanctions. Bama AD, Mal Moore, who was an assistant coach at ND under Holtz, contacted White to cancel the agreement and White complied. Bama fan's and writer's (as well as those of the SEC) never mention that Bama backed out of the series.

Bama replaced ND on their schedules with Utah St and Florida International
