I do like the idea of a slow “ here come the irish" chant. Its time to come up with some intimidating chants to complement our intimidating team. I don't know why but I love the fsu chant!

It was pretty damn intimidating in '02 when 4,000 Green Clad Irish Fans marched en masse into Doak Campbell Stadium. "HERE COME THE IRISH!" started low, like a dirge and increased in volume to a roar as we went through the lower bowels of the stadium and emerged in the far endzone corner from the jumbotron.

ND fans were outnumbered 20 to 1 but after Battle's TD the stadium was OURS. Listen to the game and you'll hear ND fans rockin' the place. When time expired the ND fans marched out together down the ramps with "HERE COME THE IRISH" echoing off every concrete surface.

Later on as I was waiting for a bus to get back to my parking garage a woman at a FSU tailgate party asked if ND fans always chanted, "Here Come The Irish!" and marched into the stadium en masse. She and her friends though it was the most imtidating display they've ever seen in Doak Campbell. "You literally stole our thunder. No visitor has ever done that here." I told he we only do for special opponents.

I got invited to join the tailgate. A lot nicer fans than LSU's in Baton Rouge when we silenced Death Valley with "WE ARE ND!". Again listen to a replay of the game and you'll ND fans rockin' Tiger Stadium. There we were outnumbered by about 30 to 1.

ND has had intimidating chants for a century. It helps when the team back up the chants on the field.

Shake Down The Thunder!

...if that's alright: "God," with a single d. "Grammar," with a double-m, and flame war in two words.

Just sayin'. ;)

LMFAO!

Keep in mind that "alright" as opposed to "all right" is as yet grammatically "unacceptable."

Spelling and structure are fluid. Just don't expect this fossil to accept change without a fight and a degree of parsimony.

Once again, NDbrbkNy, keep up the good work. Leave it to bastages like me to be a-holes.

"LMFAO?" Is this an abbreviation for "Lately Most Fokkers Are Oringanlisits?

... Oringanlisits?

That even stumped google.

I did learn that "Originalists" (google's forced search) believe in a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution but we'd have to move to the Lep Lounge to discuss Old Fokkers and conservatism.

I always though that term referred to Irenaeus and Augustine's crowd or the group that backed up Rosie Hamlin on My Angel Baby.

Now My next question is when the band forms the ND at the tunnel for the team is it at the coach's discretion? Because i allways watched ND games since i was born Lou ,Bob Davie, and TY never had the band form the ND but charlie and BK extensively had the and form it all the time

Usage Discussion of ALRIGHT

The one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <the first two years of medical school were alright— Gertrude Stein>.

I don't know when it started or whether it was the Band Director, Dr. Dye's idea or not. My guess would be Weis as he instituted, or reinstituted, several things to get the players, student body, and fans more closely involved.

I'm gonna need you to go ahead and close the open door you've created with your quotations before all of your "cows" get out, you Minnesotan.

*Emphasis on the way "cows" is pronounced, Minnesotan/Palin style. Speaking of Palin style...

Not sure where yer headed with this, pardner. I'm not a native Minnesotan but have absorbed a bit of the "Fargo" accent in my 30+ years here. When I get back to my birth stompin' grounds, NYC, I speed up and take on a bit of the N' Yawker-ese. When back in Flaw-ri-duh (where I lived from age six through twenty-eight), I slows down and exhibits a bit of southern drawl. Four years in South Bend had no real effect since I was surrounded by people from all corners of these here Yew-Knighted States of 'Merica.

Perhaps I've been acculturated to certain nuances, but I don't hear a great deal of difference in the way "cow" is pronounced here as opposed to anywhere else.

I'd love to say, with a straight face, that "oringanlisits" was a word that I made up simply to further the conversation with a touch of whimsy. Alas, it was more a matter of peering at the keyboard and screen though the bottom of an empty bottle of Burgundy. Rarely a good thing. I was toasting my departed mother (to myself) throughout the day.

You and Google got me, and got me good!

Muchas gracias, señor.

I've not yet come across a definitive internet abbreviation style book. Hell, I've only recently learned what "lol" means. I assume that it should be capitalized when used at the beginning of a sentence or as a stand-alone comment. If there is a connected comment or statement, a comma would be appropriate, with capitalization of the following word dependent on other grammatical rules. Remember, if used as a stand-alone comment, there should be a double space following the period, with a capitalization of the next expressed thought, comment or statement.

The crazy thing is, I didn't just bring this up for the sake of argument but I have wondered this a lot when writing lol. (I am such a loser...I know. :p )
As a stand-alone comment, it seems weird having a period after it.
Why the double space after the period?

Thanks for answerin' my questions, mate! I appreciate it.

Holy buckets! Someone took my blathering as gospel? Bless you! You are no loser. Rules are helpful, but they are also "made to be broken."

I actually know the meanings of "lol" and "lmfao" and many others. There are, however, many newer "catch abbreviations" that I haven't deciphered as yet. I have a tough time keeping up, but it gives me reason to fire up my computer for something other than The New York Times.

Tying long held style rules for print to the internet may well be a fool's game ... color me foolish. Think of how you would treat "LOL" were it splayed out as "Laughing Out Loud" or "LMFAO" as "Laughing My ****ing *** Off." Both can be a stand alone or ancillary comment.

Rules of style and structure call for a double space after a period that denotes the end of a sentence. A period that ends an abbreviation calls for a whole 'nother assessment. Thus the falibility of my bull**** in regard to the internet and its foibles.
