Something that really bugs me

So i wasn't sure where to put this so i thought i'd just stick it here.

I maybe in the minority here and I may get killed for this, but i'm getting really sick and tired of pretty much everytime something from ESPN gets posted here it gets turned into pissing and moaning about how ESPN hates ND instead of what could be good football talk.

I mean everytime it turns into some of the following, so and so said something negative about ND, so and so didn't have anything positive to say, oh i'm so glad so and so stood up for ND, well guys with shows like this there is usually a mediator, a bad guy, a good guy and a neutral guy. When a good majority of the time they are just stating the facts

Do you remember what it was like around here in October? People were down each others throats bitching and moaning about how mediocre ND was and were saying VERY SIMILAR THINGS TO WHAT THE PEOPLE AT ESPN HAVE BEEN AND ARE SAYING. Yet ND goes on a nice little run and all is forgotten and all of a sudden it turns into ND is back and so on and so forth.

Guess what? A good majority of people aren't gonna give ND the reach around after a nice little run that a lot of teams could of had.

All i'm saying is yes i'm excited about this fall and the future of ND football, but the fact remains ND still has a ways to go before it is elite again. So everytime someone says something that in your eyes is negative about ND let it roll off your back.

I'll probably get killed for this, but it's something that has irritated me for quite a bit now. I probably coulda gone on a little bit more, but I got lazy

I get it totally. But I'm (and I'm sure most of us) tired of hearing "We have a long way to go before we're elite again". I have been hearing that since Lou Holtz left the program and that was what 15-16 years ago??? And guess what? We still have a long way to go before were elite. BOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG! I get what you are saying though, I have heard it a million times a day for the last 15 years.

The board is talking about it, so its working. Plain and simple. Its easy to talk good about ND, the Yankees, Celtics, etc. But when you don't, it garners interest. Sports Illustrated does it every year with their #1 pick. Its always someone thats absurd, but people buy the mag and talk about it.

how many ELITE teams have more than 5 national titles? i would look at ELITE as a body of work not just a few yrs here and there.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Notre Dame fans, and Notre Dame haters.

Notre Dame fans are either cautiously optimistic, or unrealistically optimistic.

The cautiously optimistic are usually the die hard Lou Holtz fans who want ND to go undefeated and bring in 11 more NC's but they know it takes time, it takes work, and with new coaches, we get excited the first season, only to be let down in the 2nd or 3rd etc.

The unrealistically optimistic fans are the younger ones, the ones who don't remember Lou hauling players off the field by their facemasks, or throwing his headset...or listening to his heartfelt speeches that could motivate anyone to do anything. These fans probably don't remember the 1988 NC game. They probably don't remember 1993 when ND beat FSU to become #1 only to have BC crush our dreams with that stinger of a FG the week later. They probably don't remember ND ALWAYS being in the top 25, or at least the top 10. But they hear the stories, and they want to know what it was like, and to them, every season will be THE season.

ND haters hate ND. With gusto. For no reason. Could be they're jealous their school isn't as awesome, doesn't have as much history, or as much tradition. Maybe they are jealous because ND fans aren't regional, ND fans exist in every state of the US, and they follow their team. Maybe they are pissy because they can't make the grades to get into the school, I don't know. But they hate them and you'll never catch a hater saying anything nice about ND EVER.

However, regardless of what category of FAN you fall into, you're no less valuable to ND. Some choose to tread lightly, and other wanna wear their Irish heart on their sleeve. This is what makes the ND nation great, and gives the haters even more reason to hate. Oh hell, that rhymed. Anyway...we all need to get off each other's back about ND and how the season will go. Because we all know ND is headed in the right direction.

Something else. Signs above a cash register that say "10 items or less" or "20 items or less." That really bugs me, and I'll bet it bugs Neutered and DShans, too. You would think that the geniuses who run these multi-billion dollar corporations (WalMart and Menards are the worst offenders I have found) could hire somebody with at least the minimum grammar skills to know that the signs, for which they must pay a fortune nationwide, should say "10 items or FEWER" or "20 items or FEWER." Any 8th grader should know this. What is even worse is when I go talk to a manager about this in an attempt to start the ball rolling to get this corrected and they act like I'M the idiot, not them and their stupid, blatantly grammatically incorrect signs.

I really like what you had to say, and I like the way this thread started. Sorry I am just starting to feel a tad uncomfortably talking about reach arounds with you, and then dshans talking about, gulp, having Neutered's haunches. It's all just too much! The room is spinning . . .

By the way, it wasn't BC that stopped ND's NC run in '93; it was the Bobby Bowden lifetime achievement committee. Do any of you remember what Bobby said after the same ND team took his Seminoles apart in November?

That is the origin of all the screw ND attitude in the media, and the Florida teams supplanting ND in the elite program category, with the national football consciousness. I mean NC and ’93 is the mother of it all!

I agree with the original post completely.
I was somewhat surprised and very disappointed in the recent ESPN thread, where people called Kirk many bad names and said how terrible ESPN was for hating ND.
That report was DEAD on in everything they say. Kirk is very knowledgeable and one of our biggest allies on ESPN. BUT he is FAIR and reasonable. The report was very fair and balanced to both sides...to the point where I was very pleasantly surprised.
David Polack wasn't on there so there wasn't any real haters, and most had a very sensible thing to say.
Which I could not say for some of the posters on here.

The fact remains that we do have a long way to go, and its debatable if we can ever get back to an elite team. The espn special on Notre Dame was very true to the team. Its one thing to be positive about the direction its another to be unrealistic. And for years I have seen many unrealistic fans.
