If it looks like Notre Dame’s defense is bigger than seasons past, it’s because it is. Consider that the projected starting 2011 defense, even with one less defensive lineman, is 205 pounds heavier than the 2006 defense. (Numbers courtesy of JRT)

2011 (3-4 alignment) 2006 (4-3 alignment)
Louis Nix, 345 Trevor Laws, 283
Ethan Johnson, 300 Derek Landri, 277
Kapron Lewis-Moore, 295 Victor Abiamiri, 270
Darius Fleming, 250 Chris Frome, 262
Prince Shembo, 250 Joe Brockington, 220
Manti Te’o 255 Maurice Crum, 220
Carlo Calabrese, 245 Travis Thomas, 209
Zeke Motta, 215 Chinedum Ndukwe 210
Harrison Smith, 214 Tommy Zbikowski, 210
Robert Blanton, 196 Ambrose Wooden, 193
Gary Gray, 195 Mike Richardson, 188

Total: 2,755 lbs. Total: 2,550 lbs.

If you’re looking for a reason to believe that the Irish can play dominant defense, here it is. Three NFL sized defensive linemen? Check. Big, strong, physical linebackers? Yep. In the past, it was the front-seven of the Irish defense that didn’t physically stack up. Not anymore.

Great figure that supports our excitement about the defense this year.

The defense is gonna be bangin this year, no doubt about it. I am pumped for the scUM game, it would be so nice to hand them a butt kickin in the big house!

Everybody's raving about Lynch when Tuitt is just as good, if not better, than Aaron is. Our DL could be amazing down the line, and a big reason why I think we might be able to field a national title caliber team in 2013 or 2014 (big if, at the moment).

We don't know that yet. The crazy-awesome thing about Lynch is his speed. The one play where he chased the guy down from behind running downfield after the play was INCREDIBLE. What a motor! I could care less about him beating the block of some tired OL doing double duty... because that could just as much be the OL as it could be Aaron. But that play where he didn't give up on the play and ran the guy down... wow... there are only a handful of people that can do that.

With regards to Tuitt, I'm really optimistic about him because he is a prototypical 3-4 DE that should command double teams later in his career. If Tuitt and Nix command double teams... that means Lynch and Ishaq are going to get 1v1s with a TE/OL... and that is just so awesome to think about.

If all three of the Lynch/Tuitt/Nix trio reach their full potential, any of the three could face a double team.

Can't wait to see our d-line this year. Nix, Hafis, Cwynar, EJ, KLM, Lynch, Schwenke, maybe Tuitt. Finally have skill/depth of a real team.

Nix playing the noseguard will get a double-team pretty much every single play by default. even if he wasnt a dominate player(thats a big reason why you want a HUGE guy playing NG - double teams). Thats the life of noseguard in a 3-4, or 5-2 defense. (thats one big reason why albert haynesworth didnt want to play in WSH - constant double teams in a 3-4). Now add lynch, tuitt, ishaq, teo, and the offense is going to pick who they want to double from those guys. eventually the offense will run out of blockers. this puts the opposing team at a disadvantage where guys like filer, calabrese, spond, (rabasa)etc will be totally left to a 1on1 situation locked up on an RB/TE. its a situation where the defense can dictate how the offense will need to block them, as opposed to the offense having their way with the Irish defense. A good coaching staff will see this, and take advantage of this(I know BK/Diaco are all over it). Alot different than blitzing on every play, hoping something good comes from it. /ahem

I anticipate a huge year for the front 7 of the Irish defense this year, and espeically the linebacking corp at ND. Te'o must be excited to be able to have the opportunity to play on this defense(scheme and personnel)....and players like Tuit and Rabasa are not even here yet.

How much do you guys think Tuitt weighs by fall?

If he's over 270 and plays as fast and agile as he did in high school....wow.

I don't necessarily think it is how much he weighs; but, more how much weight he uses. I remember seing a post of his facethingy, brought over to one of these threads (I have started a new rampage to wipe out Facebook, twitter, etc) in which he had stated some pretty incredible goals for lifting. I am to lazy to look them up, but I remember Old Man Mike considered them to be in the "elite" range for a skilled lifter, let alone a highschool senior!

When was the last year that there was more positive talk about our defense than offense?

I'm going to go with circa 1993, though my memory is a little hazy. I think ND is in it to win it this year. If we can hold teams to 3 pts per game, that's awesome. I think this year is going to be awesome, and I think I'm finally going to get my bragging rights back against scUM. Plus, I'll be there in Ann Arbor...I cannot wait. I just want to go to sleep and wake up on Sept 3!!!!

Agreed. I was at the game in 09, and it was LOUD. Of course I was there with 3 michigan fans too. I wouldn't be so optimistic to holding to 3 points a game but we aren't going to have to get in to a shooting-fest to win games this year.

The two young kids are studs, but I am going to love seeing Kona more this year too. I think he is about to blow-up. And the rotation we are going to have--no one tired all going balls to the wall after the QB and RB. I can't wait.

The nation better watch out, the Irish Nation is about be be in full effect!!
