He is an all district basketball player and a member of the schools state qualifying 4x100 relay team that went 44.3, which is fast. The kid's an athlete and i'd be willing to bet a better athlete than Kiel overall.

I'm with NuetDom on this, that is a good time, but its really not that noteworthy. Most schools here in CO (not a great state for track, but ok) have teams that can run in that area. Second of all, its a relay.... so it probably isnt a great example of one individual's speed.

I am fine with debating Mauk's attributes and his potential of being a starting caliber QB for ND, but Gunner's skill set is simply at a different level than Mauk's. He's bigger, faster and stronger. He is the #1 overall QB for a reason.

Off topic but...44.3 qualified for the state meet? Geez. Slow state.

Agreed. From a track athlete first, lacrosse player second... 44.3 is very far from "fast"... there must be some really slow people in Ohio/his region if that qualifies you for the state meet.

As I said earlier, Mauk clearly has 4.7ish speed which is good enough to be dangerous.

See Savon Huggins, Rutgers. lol

To be fair, Rutgers was 43-21 from 2005 to 2009, and has the potential to contend, even if not on a truly national level.

In comparison Indiana was 23-37 with 10 wins over BCS teams over the same period. There's the in-state connection like Huggins with Rutgers, but it would be truly shocking if Kiel went to a school who beats 2 BCS teams a year and hasn't won 9 games in a season in almost 45 years.

Indiana is pretty awful.

Very well said sir.

You kind of touched upon how I feel. If Kelly wants to take Mauk early and then either shut down the QB position for the year or (likely) hurt his chances in getting Kiel, I'm okay with that. Because like you said, Mauk will be a project and in my mind I think we can afford to NOT pick up a QB this cycle, but I don't have a big problem with taking a flyer with Mauk and seeing how he develops three years down the road.

I'd also like to add that I don't think Mauk even sniffs the top 10 at his position let alone staying at his current #5 spot on Scout. His size alone (he looks 6'0" to me) will drop him...just ask Everett Golson. And when I see that Golson was a 3/4 star guy who wasn't considered "elite" at his position, I don't think there's anyway whatsoever that Mauk will be.

Id also say that I think Kiel is more athletic. Kiel has experience running the spread option and is pretty good at it. Mauk doesn't even know how to hand off to a running back! At the very least, these two guys are similar in their athleticism, but with Kiel being so much bigger he is more impressive. I mean if you're 6'0" and supposed to be athletic I am waiting to see you amaze me and I just don't see that with Mauk. Kiel isn't amazing in that sense either, but he's a big kid so it's more enticing.

Also, does Mauk really fit our system better? I would think he's going to have tons of work on his footwork, pocket presence, possibly his throwing motion, and just basic stuff like handing the ball off that he doesn't work on at his high school. So his team throws the ball a lot and probably runs some of the same screens...I'm not seeing a ton of similarities to our system, and none more so than what Kiel does in high school.

Real quick:

1. Kiel is not, per numerous coaches and scouts, a better athlete/runner than Mauk. That's a falacy.

2. Mauk's h.s. coach and father (say what you will but the dude is successful and knows a helluva lot more than you and I) said that the offense Maty runs and BK's offense are strikingly similar. Obviously Bk's is more complicated, but their offense are VERY similar. So yes, he does fit the system very well.

3. Any h.s. QB will have tons of work to do with footwork, pocket presence, etc. That will not be just a Maty Mauk issue, it will be an issue for pretty much any QB. Some might be more advanced, but there are still issues to be worked on. Kiel will have many of those same issues, you'll see.

Regardless of any flaw you could find in Mauk, he most likely will be sitting for three years, and if ND redshirts Golson, then, barring any major injuries, most likely a lifetime backup.

Pay sites; can't link to it here. But you can listen to Mike Frank's Power Hour last night on Itunes (free) and there was a Mauk/Kiel debate and I'm pretty sure that the difference in athleticism was brought up in the first half.

I will do that, my friend. Can't until I get home from work though.

But I will add... if it was indeed a falacy, and something that several coaches and scouts have confirmed... I would imagine it would be a little easier to find. no?

Just pull up youtube. Your eyes can tell you Mauk is faster. It's undeniable.

Dude, Mauk's youtube highlights are filled with him getting chased by 5'8" white kids that play div IV football. Hardly a good way to compare speed levels.

I will listen to the power hour as soon as I can though. I dig Power Hour.

Seriously, anyone with half a brain can tell by watching him cover ground that it is both:

A) Faster than the Kiel clips
B) Somewhere north of 4.6ish speed and likely south of 4.8

This just isn't even debatable.

Kiel.

Wait no Mauk...

Well no.

I WANT THE FIRST TO COMMIT TO A NEW AND IMPROVED IRISH SQUAD!

I want competitors.

Gamers.

Both Kiel and Mauk. Screw one or the other if they discourage the other's commit.

The right ND kid will be at ND. Right now, Mauk is the man showing us the most love.

Debate that.

I'll look at them again when I get home (work blocks it), but every time I watch his highlights I see the same thing. A kid that runs an offense designed around him, and against mediocre competition. That's not a knock on Mauk, its just that highlight films can be very deceptive like that.

Out of curiousity.... Since he's playing weak competion, wouldn't that mean he's playing WITH mediocre players and making them look good and still putting up gaudy numbers.

Oh, my bad.... I thought this was Maty Mauk's thread.

Poison
Or
Motley Crue?

It's one thing to state an opinion, but when you basically repeat it over and over again it gets obnoxious

Just my :twocents:

When I first read that "Screw one" I thought you were going to start the "screw one, kill one, marry one" game...no joke haha

From watching his highlights and talking to people who have watched him play, in my opinion, the only player Maty Mauk makes look good.... Is Maty Mauk. His offense is designed to throw short, high percentage thows to spread the field horizontally, in order to allow him to take occasional deep gambles. This is where he also throws a lot of his picks.

Keep in mind guys, don't get bent out of shape about my feelings on this. My comments are based solely on his physical skill set, not on him personally.
