Was Joe the top QB prospect in the nation?
Yes he was. He was also drafted by the Twins and chose to go to ND instead.
Please do what I think you are about to do....

This discussion really is all over the place!
True freshmen never do great. But there are a ton of second year players in recent memory who were.
I like Notre Dame's depth at QB. I think Hendrix or Golson are the future, and I don't think Kiel is walking into that situation, but I'd love to have him, make no mistake.

I love Joe, except when he went to the Skins. But, he is a bust then, at ND the only thing that matters to me, is wins, not stats or how they look in their uniforms. I dont care if a QB throws 5 times is whole career, as long as we win.
Rarely is a more appropriate word than "never". Definitive statements (or definitive interpretations of statements) are the crux of this thread. Now we've taken the argument to a new level (I suspect inadvertently) from redshirt starters and/or freshman fill-ins (starter injured) i.e. to true freshmen performing "great".
Philip Rivers was all ACC an top 10 or 12 QB as a freshman. BYU has a long history of successful Freeman QBs Deter, Young, McMahon, Beck, Feterik, and Hall.
Pryor wasn't "great" but 1300 Yds, a 12-4 TD-INT Ratio, and 3 loss season was pretty good for a freshman starter. Last's #8 NCAA QB Eff was Moniz at Hawaii. He threw for 2400 Yds as a true freshman. Godfrey of UCF threw for over 2100 as a true Freshman per the NCAA stats.

Most of the top ranked QBs didn't start as freshman, many didn't get any true freshman PT. PT is largely a function of personal performance/capability but depth and injuries are a factor. Ron Powlus was named the ND starting QB by Holtz over senior QB McDougal a few days before the '93 season. With the last great ND OLine Powlus might have won the NC. But a broken clavicle in practice changed that season and Powlus's career. Clausen was a true freshman starter behind one of the most porous OLines in ND history. Oh yeah and a few months after elbow surgery.
Philip Rivers was All
I just wanted to quote you saying that "Joe Theisman was a bust" before you came to your senses.
If we dont win the tittle, then the season is a bust.

When you are the QB at USC, Alabama, OU, etc... if you are the number 1 QB and you do not win a NC in your 4 years, you are a bust.

I'm married, so I always win the tittle.... regardless of ND's record.![]()
Sam Bradford was a HUUUUUGE bust.
