Whomever commits first wins. You know first come first serve...The early bird gets the worm...you snooze you lose. The other QB will go to another school. Time is of the essence for them.

I think so, too. I'd take one QB in this class.

There are more pressing needs (RB).

I agree, that is a real interesting dilemma. If both Mauk and Kiel want to come to ND, however unlikely it is that they both would together, would ND take both? I would have to assume you would take 2 QB's of that caliber, but it would leave us with a 6 scholarship QB's for the next 2 years, and would possibly take away from gaining another playing at a position of more dire need, i.e. RB, WR, etc.

Yeah... a lot of moving pieces there. Does DC stay healthy? Come back for another year? Who wins the starting job? Do we have any transfers? Does Golson see the field this year in a package or red shirt? Does Golson's flexibility to play other positions make it more plausible to use another roster spot on a QB?

Basically, I can conceive of scenarios where we take both, but none of them are simple.

Agreed. I do hope that BK doesn't burn Golson's redshirt for a couple option packages, in the form of a play or two a game. If you're going to do it, it has to be because of your belief he will help you win games and is ready, and it should be in the form of significant time in his package. Otherwise, stick to the Wildcat with Riddick and Wood for a year, with the possibility of using Hendrix as the change of pace QB (albeit with less athleticism than Golson).

I do think that we only wind up with one of the QB's this year, which one that is, who knows at this point. I do know that I will be more than happy with either one.

I completely agree about only taking one QB in this class. I think with the limited number of scholarships this year, the need at other positions, and the current depth at QB, we can only take one... and while i have no idea on who that will be, it will be the first to commit.

That all being said, Kelly does love his QBs and if other pieces fall into place as far as getting players at other positions of need, I think Kelly would take 2. I mean if Mauk commits early, we land a couple rbs, wrs, and nts throughout the season and Kiel is still undecided by signing day, I believe Kelly would be more than happy to accept a commitment from him.

If they want a dual threat option I would hope that Hendrix would have developed enough to be that guy. I also, don't want to see Golson burn a year of eligibilty for maybe 20 plays over the course of the year. Coaches have stated though if there's a guy on the roster that's going to help them win right away they will use him regardless of class/eligibility.

Don't forget about DBs. We need lots of DBs too.

Notre Dame is the biggest offer he has, his brother played for Kelly and his offense is virtually identical to what BK wants to ultimately run at ND= Mauk is certain to commit to ND as soon as he can. So, he hasn't committed and one has to wonder why.

Says who? You? You clearly haven't followed recruiting for an extended period of time because speculating on what a 17 or 18 year old kid SHOULD do, will get you nowhere. As an ND fan it seems like a no brainer, but to a highschool senior it may be just another offer.

Maybe he doesn't want to follow in his brothers foot steps.

Maybe he wants to blaze his own trail.

Maybe he looks at Mizzou and their ability to put quarterbacks in the NFL, and that peaks his interest.

The point is that these kids can be sold on anything. They don't always go to the "perfect fit." It could be something as simple as Nike/Adidas or available jersey numbers. Anyone who follows recruiting realizes that things that we as board members overlook, could mean the world to certain kids. Rational decisions don't always prevail.

....and all of the people saying "I TOLD YOU HE WAS AN AWESOME PROSPECT!" are going to come out and feel vindicated.

What I will say is we better get Kiel or Mauk... if we somehow miss on both I will break stuff.

I'm warming up to him, but then again it's Scout, and Scout's probably the most inaccurate of the three major recruiting services.

Lemming's thoughts on ND's QB prospects, FWIW:

The top of Notre Dame quarterback wish list for the 2012 recruiting cycle is an intriguing study in contrasts.

There’s Kenton, Ohio quarterback Maty Mauk, a 6-2, 185-pounder who is not among CBS College Sports re-cruiting analyst Tom Lemming’s top 100 prospects nationally.

He counts Buffalo, Ball State and Michigan among nine offers, but seems like a near-prototypical fit for Kelly’s spread offense.

Then there’s Gunner Kiel, a 6-4, 220-pound pro-style QB from East High in Columbus, Ind. He’s former Irish quarterback Blair Kiel’s nephew and counts Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, TCU and Michigan among his already unwieldy list of offers.

He’s the No. 2 prospect regardless of position on Lemming’s top 100, behind only Dorial Green-Beckham — a 6-6, 220-pounder from Springfield, Mo., and ND’s top receiver target.

“I met with Maty Mauk recently,” Lemming said, “and I definitely believe he’s leaning to Notre Dame. I think he would have committed to Notre Dame already had his mother not insisted on him visiting other schools.

“Gunner Kiel recently had a great visit to Notre Dame, enough so that I think at this early stage the Irish are either the favorites or even with the other favorites. If they (the Irish) take Mauk early, they could lose Kiel.

“Maty is listed at 6-2, but he’s probably closer to 6-0 than 6-2. His brother, Ben, played for Brian Kelly at Cincinnati, and Maty has all the intangibles that Kelly likes. He can keep plays going with his imagination. You’ll see him flip balls to receivers just as he’s about to be sacked. Mauk is a Kelly-type of guy, although Kiel will definitely be a much better pro prospect.”

My biggest concern is that no matter who ND gets it is likely that Michigan grabs the other. So if we get Mauk, I think Michigan is almost a lock to get Kiel or Pike, which scares the **** out of me.

With all of the connections, Kiel needs to be Irish. Can't let another school come into Indiana and grab a quasi-legacy who says he wants to stay close to home and focus on education. That would just be a kick in the balls x1000. Does anyone think there is a chance that Kiel would commit to ND even if Mauk commits?

The whole QB situation is just mind boggling at the moment. If we wanted to, we would have the inside track on 3 out of the 5 top QBs (Kiel, Pike and Mauk) but we have no idea who will be our starting QB this year much less who we will have on the roster in 2012.

There is always a chance. Look at USC last year, they had 2 highly touted guys commit at QB... But, I think Kelly would only take one considering the more urgent need in other positions. We'll see I guess.

Interesting point. Let's assume 19 slots. Let's also assume that we keep the verbals we currently have and that gives us 17. Then let's assume we add 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 3 more DBs, 3 more OL, 1 DT, 2 DE, 3 LBs, 1 TE... that gives us 18... putting us one over... and that's with no QB. Scholarships are going to be very tight with the needs at RB and WR.

So many people might consider QB a luxury in this cycle were it not that we have such an inside track on these top flight prospects. Right now if I were a betting man I would guess we land Mauk in the next couple weeks and Kiel ends up at Michigan.

The numbers are kinda hard to figure out as of right now. I don't think anybody other than maybe BK and staff can really predict how many recruits we are going to take overall or at different positions. It is too early to tell because of possible transfers, or who comes back as 5th year, or who goes on to the NFL, etc...
That aside. I think that Kelly has hinted in previous interviews that he most definitely wants to take a QB every year.

The fifth year senior list for next year is interesting; Without sounding to merenary, if there is a recuriting opportunity, BK's staff should pull the trigger. In other words, I don't think there is a hard fast number of seventeen or eighteen at this point.

Gunner is coming for the Blue&Gold game right?

My prediction, we'll have a QB commitment by the end of the month.

An athlete like this will force the D to bring the A game, and cause opposing D coaches nightmares. The improvising QBs that can juke, run, toss, make stuff up...total nightmare to defend. Tarkenton, Staubach, McCoy, Flutie, Vick, Denard...those guys. To hell with technique and "proper" footwork.

Can you WIN THE GAME and can you keep turnovers to a minimum?!? This guy looks like he is "PLAYING" football. Not overthinking, not over"techniquing." (Is that a word?). Just PLAYING football.

Total nightmare to defend against.
