Why do do people keep saying Rudy is gone ?He hasn't really been healthy for close to a full season.

I cant speak for anyone else, but I have been saying that for awhile because of 2 reasons: he is NFL ready, and I cant see another TE being picked before him. If your the #1 guy in your position, then the NFL is calling. Staying only gives you the option to go down in the draft.

Look what happen to Taylor Mays, most ppl thought he was a top10, or possibly a #5-#7 pick. Until PTC talked him into staying another year. Then, of course, PTC picked Earl Thomas over Mays in that next draft, but I digress. But Mays prolly should have came out the previous year, when he was the projected #1 player in his position. Instead, Mays fell out of the top10, yes he still paid, but he lost a significant amount of cash and ended up going all the way in the 2nd round.

I think Rudy is the #1 TE - if the NFL thinks that, he would make a mistake by staying another year. I might be wrong but I think there has only been one TE ever picked in the 1st round, Rudy might be the 2nd TE picked in the first round. Dude is a stud

Heysus, while I agree with most of what you said... Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jeremy Shockey are two tight ends that come to mind right away when I tried to think of any first round picks. I'm pretty sure there's more.

Got a feeling the first team to pick him up will be Carolina. It is probably the best fit needing another wide-out and back with JC. Steven Smith needs a compliment and I think Floyd would be perfect.

Diz

Only way I see him going to Carolina is if they trade down to try to get either 2 first round picks or a first and high second. They need too much help other places to take Floyd first overall.

I agree with you 100% TD.

However, just in case you feel like throwing out your TE stat at your next party, TEs have actually been drafted much more than you think in the 1st round. Just last year alone, Jermaine Gresham was selected in the 1st round. The year before, Brandon Pettitgrew (sp???) to the Lions. The year before that...Keller to the Jets. 2007 - Greg Olson. 2006 - Vernon Davis (6th) and Marcedes Lewis.

So, the point is, it does happen, but as you can see, only about 1 per year. And this year, with the way TEs are being used as a huge weapon, esp by the Patriots, the top TE will be in high demand. And that TE will be Kyle Rudolph...

EDIT: Syria beat me to it.

+1

If your assumed to go #1 in your position staying can only hurt you. Teams don't know their draft positions 2 years ahead and don't know all or their most important needs 2 years ahead either. Now Floyd on the other hand I personally think will improve his draft stock with staying. He's most likely not going to be drafted #1 for his position. For selfish reasons I would like both to stay, but I don't see that happening.

For purely selfish reasons I hope Floyd and Rudy come back. I'd say it's about 50-50 that they both do. Or 75-25 that 1 or the other does. Due to injuries and a new system, neither had an outstanding season, so who knows.

I figure Rudy is gone even though he shouldn't listen to mock draft boards. It's a weak Tight End class this year and he will be judged on his sophomore year not last. This is a pretty strong reciever class Floyd while I think could be a good pro I see him late early 3rd round. Who knows last year at this time Clausen was the number one overall in most mock drafts.

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is Michael Floyd and Kyle Rudolph... Oh, and a National Championship.

Love,
FightingIrishLover7

But seriously. With Kyle, Michael, TJ, Theo, Cierre, DaVaris, Effiert, Toma, Goodman, and possibly Bennett Jackson at WR.

We are loaded with play makers. Our depth is nasty. And if Dayne can get healthy or someone else like Tommy, Andrew, or Everett can step up and play big at QB I'm liking our roster.

I'm really really liking our roster.

Thank You CW. He was a hell of a recruiter, and now we have someone who can coach them up. Even if Floyd and Rudolph go, we have most of the rest of the offense and defense back. I think the key to a good year will be our start, especially the Michigan game. We need to win that game to get off on the right foot.

I'd think that, if Rudolph is healthy enough to work out for teams in teh spring, he'll probably go. In terms of Floyd, did the Sun Bowl (a) strengthen his resume enough with his stats, or (b) hurt him by showing all the haters that he is "injury prone"?

I'm just putting myself in the shoes of an NFL GM looking at these two players...who's the "safer" pick? From an unbiased view, I'd think it has to be Rudolph. I love both these guys, but if you look at Floyd's season as a whole (got hated on for dropped passes early, injuries during the season, etc.) would you feel 100% confident investing first or early 2nd round money there? Someone on the board referenced Golden Tate as an example of NFL growing pains....excellent point there. I know Floyd has better size, but it's still a solid point.

I'd also think that both Floyd and Rudolph have to be looking at the NFL CBA.

I wonder when the announcement will be. I hope to God he stays, but I wouldn't blame him if he left. Whatever happens, it has been a pleasure watching Michael Floyd playing for our Irish. He will forever be one of my all time favorites.

I'm with you. That is why I am cautiously optimistic that he returns. He is an all time ND great, but when I think of my other all time favorite players (ie Rocket, T Brown, Bettis, etc) I think of them playing at the highest stage of football. If Floyd returns, I think next season will be that opportunity for him. How sweet would it be to watch Floyd dominate a BCS level game?

Everybody keeps talking about Floyd being injury prone and talking like Rudolph is a sure thing, but he has been pretty injury prone in his time here. I really hope both come back for another year but I don't see how anybody could blame them for leaving for the NFL. I'm sure most of us would stay at ND as long as we could because we are all huge fans and that is probably one dream we have had since childhood but I doubt they grew up loving ND like most of us. I do know they both have said that the NFL is a dream they have always had and why not go while you have the chance and are healthy because if they were to get hurt next year and not get to the NFL and have to work normal jobs like the rest of us they would be losing a ton of money.

I totally agree, but that is not why I personally think Rudolph should go. I don't want to speak for others, but everything I have heard points to Rudolph being the overwhelming favorite as the first TE taken in the draft. That gives him a low first or high second round pick.

While Floyd is a fantastic talent, this may be one of the deepest WR classes in recent history. If teams look toward defense like last year, or simply dont pick a lot of WR's in the first round, then Michael could see a Clausenesque type slide into deeper rounds. Next year's WR class would most likely have Floyd sitting on top with a high first round grade.

I totally agree with what you are saying and feel that it would definately benefit Floyd to stay over Rudolph. Being selfish I hope they both stay.

Rudy is actually showing up as a mid second round pick on all the mock drafts I've seen. It's a weak year for tight ends, and I don't see him going high given his history of injuries. I actually think it benefits both of them to come back next year and compete at a high level and dominate and become first round picks.

I presonally believe it benefits most every single player to come back for their senior year... but when the money is there it is hard to pass up... if there isn't a league though idk why they would just sit back and train for one year...

As projected high draft picks they could take out insurance policies guaranteeing them big paydays if they have a career ending injury. Would they be set for life? No, but they wouldn't necessarily be hurting either if they are smart with their money.

The thing is that everyone is basing the question of whether they turn pro on the idea that they are first round picks, or early second round picks at worst.

That doesn't appear to be the case at this point. Every single mock draft has both of them out of the first round except for one which has Rudy going 31st.

They need to learn from Clausen last year. He thought he was a first round pick, this board thought he was a high first round pick, and he went late second round.

Once again, this board thinks we have two first round picks, but I think a more objective outlook makes it clear that it's unlikely that either is a first round pick. Given that, plus the uncertainty in the NFL labour dispute they should really think about coming back strongly.

^I agree. I believe if they stay, and are healthy thru next year, they both gain late first round status. It is in all players interest to be at the top of their college level game when they leave for the draft. I believe Floyd has grown/improved alot this year, especially in the blocking part of his game. I think he still has room for improvement that he could get from staying another year. Rudy on the other hand has that natural ability for a tight end that doesn't come around very often. Although he may not have as much room for skill improvement, he will be the first tight end taken either year and 'experts' believe this year is not a premium year for tight ends.

Alternatively, you can look at people like Jake Locker who lost millions by coming back. Sam Bradford managed to pull it off but very nearly did the same. Factor in that they're injury prone and another year gives them the chance to redeem, but we're also assuming they have amazing years. What if they don't? What if they get hurt again?

I'm glad that both sides of the argument are being presented. I simply think that it's an extremely difficult decision and there's no way to know which side is correct at this time. Hopefully both of them make the right decision for themselves.
