Allegations means its alleged to have occurred. Not that I am standing up for the guy in any respect, but let the courts play it out. If not guilty watch the lawsuit on Pitt.

there won't be a lawsuit. Pretty much 100% of coach contracts have clauses that give the school cause for firing the coach if he is charged with felony are gets into legal trouble. Haywood really screwed up.

Not only is he out of a job, but the the assistants he was gonna bring with him from Miami Ohio are now unemployed too. What a jerk move.

do you know what slander is? repoting something that is 100% factual is in no way, shape, or form slanderous.

if it is reported in south bend, you cant expect them not to mention he was a former ND player and OC.

Maybe not slander but my point is if the accused had no ties to Notre Dame this would have not been news. Willing to bet theres 100's of domestics in South Bend on any given week none of which make the paper.

I know it's their job to report what people will actually read, just gets old.

If you have some celebrity then your mistakes are going to be reported. Especially when you are the head football coach of a Division I university.

So you are saying that a head coach at a major college program wouldn't be in the news because they were not ND related?

The original headline made no mention of PITT
Former ND coach arrested on domestic violence charge

Now I know I'm kicking a dead horse & I know what they're gonna report & how they're gonna present it.

In light of the all the recent tragedies & controversy, I was simply expressing my displeasure for the way words are sometimes framed. Truth be told what I posted originally was after a day of watching football & about 18 beers deep. I was on a huge high after a big ND bowl win & disgusted to see more negativity about my beloved football program in the news almost immediately after.

I know the media is not to blame on this one just getting fed up.

Where was that headline from? If it was somewhere near Notre Dame, I would expect that headline. The Media always plays up the local media angle. If I remember right ESPN had him listed as the Pitt Head Coach. It all depends on where you are getting your information.

Beat me to it. Exactly. Cnnsi.com, espn.com, latimes.com, etc etc etc all had the headline as "Pitt coach arrested...".

It's a major story, and the media reported it. Nothing wrong with that nor the way they reported it IMHO...

I thought there was another thread about Haywood's problems last year, but couldn't find it.

Ind. judge dismisses charges against ex-Pitt coach

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—An Indiana judge has dismissed a domestic battery charge against former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Michael Haywood, who served briefly as Pittsburgh’s head football coach before the case led to his firing.

A St. Joseph Superior Court judge dismissed the charges Friday after determining Haywood had completed all terms of a pre-trial diversion program that included counseling and community service, the South Bend Tribune reports (Former Notre Dame coach Haywood's case dismissed - southbendtribune.com).

The state had agreed to dismiss its case if Haywood completed the terms by this month.

The 47-year-old Haywood was charged with felony domestic battery and misdemeanor domestic violence after he allegedly attacked his son’s 38-year-old mother at Haywood’s Indiana home. Both counts were dismissed Friday.

Haywood admitted that he grabbed the woman and that she was hurt when she ran from him. The woman said she never wanted Haywood arrested or prosecuted though she had called 911.

Haywood had recently been hired as Pittsburgh’s head football coach when the Dec. 31, 2010, incident occurred. The school fired him the next day.

“He is relieved to have it all behind him and to be able to move forward with the rest of his life,” said Haywood’s attorney, Andre Gammage. Haywood did not appear at the hearing.

Haywood, who lives in Houston, is working for an oil company in Texas but remains close to football and plans to “get back into it,” Gammage said. Haywood completed his community service at a Texas church, he said.

Haywood has filed a lawsuit in Pittsburgh federal court alleging that University of Pittsburgh officials breached their contract and violated federal law when they terminated him.

I was so happy when he got the job, but I was mad that he did this. Hopefully he becomes a better person and gets another opportunity.

Here's the deal... whenever charges are dismissed it means there was 0% of a case there and that, basically, charges never should have been brought. He is totally entitled to sue Pitt depending on how his contract read. He likely lost millions by being terminated and I have no issues with someone trying to get some (or all) of that back.

Well, he did complete the pre-trial diversion program and he did do community service. So I think they will be able to argue that it was not a situation where there was a 0% chance of success by the prosecution. May be because the complaining witness came out and said she never wanted him arrested, etc... Maybe the harm was not so great as to warrant him having a record for this? Who knows.

...did she make a statement that said he did the things he was accused of? Did she call for help? What happened throughout...many things can trigger a conduct related termination...don't know what his contract says.

Just because you can't prosecute...ie she won't press charges, doesn't mean the conduct for which he was terminated didn't happen. We'll see, but this looks to me like it will be settled for significantly less than what he was going to be paid over the life of the contract, and only because Pitt would want to avoid a protracted legal battle...
