Yet another reason – dare I say it – that "While her loyal sons go marching onward to victory" should be tweaked to "While her loyal sons and daughters march on to victory!"

Try it. You'll like it. Recognition of a new tradition and reality and all that jazz.

Congrats and kudos to the ladies!

Disagree. For the same reason I disagree with changing the name of the Washington, DC football team. Yeah, it is probably a good idea looked at objectively... but subjectively I feel that when you've had the same fight song or mascot or whatever for decades you just don't mess with it.

So you disagree with Dartmouth's morphing from "Indians" to "Green" in the 60's? Hell, Dartmouth was founded as, and functioned as, a school for "Indians" initially. They actually deserved the nickname in the early years. Not so for the "Redskins."

The "Dodgers" earned their moniker in Brooklyn long before their move to the West Coast in 1958. The Washington Senators baseball team (after decades) became the Minnesota Twins when they relocated to Minnesota in 1961. The Lakers remained the "Lakers" upon moving to LA from Minneapolis – how many lakes are there in LA? The Jazz moved from New Orleans, where the moniker made sense, to Utah where it doesn't. At least The Browns, as down on their luck as they might be, are still "The Browns."

Notre Dame was not always "The Fighting Irish" just as it was not always co-ed. The song was written long before women were admitted. Had women and women's athletic teams been part of Notre Dame at the time the melody and lyrics were written --- who knows?

As much as I clamor for "old fashioned" ND football (Smash, Bash & Run) I welcome and congratulate the women. Welcome to the Modern Era. I'd like to see women recognized in Notre Dame song and on-going lore. The school, after all, is Our Lady of the Lake.

A little cut-and-paste won't negate decades of tradition.

Yes to the bolded part. As do I disagree with Marquette changing their name, etc.

And you absolutely have a valid point, I am just personally in favor of not changing "old fashioned" things in favor of modern day political correctness.

Our soccer program is amazing. Cindy Daws was fun to look at back in my day when we won our first 'chip too. Talking about her play on the field. Not those legs that could crush schoolchildren. Not at all.

Atta girls. Well done.

What a wonderful thing by our Futbol Angels. Sort of like our football guys, our girls play lights-out defense [nobody gets past our deep right defensewoman {her name is something like Scheidler--please forgive me sweetheart}] and like Diaco's boys, the defenders don't get all the credit they deserve. Beautiful---in all the interpretations of that word.

I agree with your take on Marquette. Mascot aside, "Warrior" could be damn near anything. As an Irishman I'd just as soon see "Fighting" dropped and "Irish" retained. How 'bout "The Writing Irish?"

That the school was founded by French priests is a separate matter. The "Fighting Frogs," anyone?

As to "political correctness." Political is political. Correctness is correctness. All too often "never the twain shall meet." Perspective is paramount. It all comes down to issues of respect and recognition.

I grudgingly accept that The Huddle is no longer an independent greasy spoon and is now infested by the likes of Burger King, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. Times do change in spite of me.

Just sayin' that the ladies are due their "due." With minimal pain.

In support of my guru dshans: When it comes to peoples' feelings [up or downbeat], phrasing things as "political correctness" is, at a minimum, a misnomer. What our "taking account of people" is, in actuailty, a kindness, and in keeping with Gospel love. Our "girls" [and as a teacher of these ladies for thirty years, I can tell you that almost all of them take the term as an affection when it's not abused] feel very good about themselves when they are fully included.

That said: it is nice if one can find an alteration in terms/language which does not grate upon the old entrained sound memories. I think that dshans' modification works just fine poetically; i.e. it keeps the "music" of the words intact. Once such changes occur, I find that anyone without hang-ups fades the old parochialism out of mind rapidly [we've done a few such things even in the mass].

And also, our Tomboy Angels are in no danger of stopping to like the boys just because we give them equal billing. I assisted on a varsity basketball team for a few years. They were tough as nails on the court, and not preening for the boys one bit while competing, but once out of the locker room, they'd, as Charles Boyer sang, "flash and send you crashing through the ceiling". I had an all-star softball catcher in my classroom once. I asked her what her goals were. She said: Win the MAC championship, and be the prettiest girl in the league. I had a hard time not supporting that, as short-term goals were concerned anyway. [p.s. her team mates called her "Rocky" and she was both talented, tough, and cute]. The bottomline line is: do we really like people or not?? As to that, how can you not like our Champion Girls/"Daughters"??

Congrats to the girls, it must be a great feeling for them.

As for the other stuff, I agree that politically correct is a misnomer. It seems presumptuous, to say the least, for me to say what people should and should not be offended by. That being said, some traditions are worth keeping. Mascots, especially mascots representing caricatures of a race that was massacred by my ancestors, do not seem to be that worth keeping (Fighting Sioux being a good exception- actual name of a local tribe instead of a generic, and racist, term.)

Loyal sons, on the other hand, probably should stay. Only because it has the great merit of fitting the tune; loyal children, loyal daughters, loyal sons and daughters... none of them work as well. You have to add an extra syllable to the song and it just doesn't work. English lacks a gender-neutral pronoun, so masculine nouns tend to fill that function. I recommend assuming that is the case here.
