Recruiting Week in Review

Ray Drew, Here you go Johnny:

“I like Notre Dame,” Drew said. “It’s a great school, a great coaching staff and a great football program. But on top of that, they have a great academic program up there as well. An education from Notre Dame is second to none. You have to look at all that kind of stuff; where can I play great football and get an education all at the same time. Notre Dame is a place that offers all of that.” ...

Despite all the recruiting interest, Drew claims to be wide open at this point. He is in the process of deciding who will get his five official visits. He has two penciled in, but has not revealed yet who those two are.

“I have thought of some and I have two that I know I am going to definitely, but I’m not sure when they are,” Drew explained. “I want to keep those under wraps.”

Drew plans on a signing day decision.

I'm only 10 minutes away from Thomasville, so I'll check one of his games.

“They are definitely high on my list,” said Atkinson of Notre Dame. “Everybody I talk to has good things to say about it, especially a couple of my dad’s teammates. Willie Brown said you can’t go wrong with a Notre Dame degree.” ...

“I am pretty open right now,” said the talented Californian. “I like Oregon, Alabama, Miami, USC and Notre Dame, of course. That’s my top but I am also pretty open to other schools like California, Washington, schools like that.”

“I’m going to be checking out what the actual campus is, campus life, and what the game day experience is and the attitude of the players and coaches and what kind of academic things they have for the football team,” Whitmire said.

Banner currently carries a 3.7 grade point average and is a very serious student. He really likes Notre Dame’s academic reputation.

“If you get a degree from Notre Dame you’re bound to get any job, any job you want,” explained Banner.

Sounds like our academics are really hurting recruiting....

Lets just see if these kids are saying this or actually mean it.

Well Atkinson already committed, so I'm hoping that he meant it. As for the other 3, that's a fair point. But for a kid like Drew, it's the only reason we're even in contention. Assuming he's not just playing the media for attention (and he doesn't seem like a kid who needs a lot of attention) he's considering a bunch of SEC schools and Notre Dame. ND offers the same thing as a lot of those SEC schools when it comes to football: exposure, tradition, fan base, etc... except that it's a thousand miles away from home, the school is smaller, and the weather is colder. What could possibly inspire a guy from the south to even think of going to ND... maybe the thought that there might be life beyond football?

Now, I'm not going to hijack TT's thread here, so this is the last I will say: if you want to see ND struggle to recruit, scrap the academic standards. It will work for a few years but long-run, ND football would end up losing its most valuable card. These guys aren't saying that the degree is valuable from Notre Dame because if you go out of your way and take hard classes you can get a great education. They're saying the degree is valuable because you cannot help but to get a great education at ND, and everybody knows it. When was the last time ND lost a scholarship player to academics? Julius Jones? Basically, if you come to Notre Dame, you will leave with a world class degree. But it will be well earned.

Julius got his grades up and returned, don't know if he ended up graduating, but he did leave and then re-enroll. Love the Banner kids comments from TT's article.

I think he did graduate, not 100% sure though. It's sort of the exception that proves the rule: if you get into ND school won't be easy, but you will graduate.

Optimistic thoughts due to French's fathers quote.

We were either in 2nd before - and now 1st, or 2nd...and still 2nd, and there is nothing else Kelly and company could have done (in my opinion)
