My take on ND now, and in the Future

First off, yes, SC is having a down year. All of the NCAA sanctions, injuries..etc. And ND was at full strength, and had a relatively smooth season....NOT!

For those saying the "what if's" with Ro Jo and Barkley playing. Here a list of "What if's" for Notre Dame:

1. What if Ian Williams was playing?
2. What if Kyle Rudolph was playing?
3. What if Armando Allen was playing?
4. What if Theo Riddick didn't sit out the last 5 games?
5. What if we didn't have a freshman QB playing his 3rd game?
6. What if our QB had 11 games under his belt, and understood Kelly's full offense?
7. What is ND hadn't had to watch, and live through, one of it's own pass away, and they go play?

No, this game does not mean ND will be playing for the National Championship next season. And, no this game does mean ND should even be ranked in the top 25.

What it does mean is that ND is tough. Notre Dame finally started to live up to the name, and spirit of the "Fighting Irish". Notre Dame finally has direction, and a belief that the future looks bright, and that the bright future is not a product of smoke and mirrors like years past. CW won 9 games with a high powered offense, and no defense. He never had a defense, he just couldn't figure it out. Under CW, it always seemed about him, there was never really that feeling of "team", and belief. They played like robots. TW had a defense, and no offense. And he..well...went 0-12 at Washington. BK won 7 games and built, slowly with setbacks, a balanced identity, and foundation . You can't build a house without a foundation. He has not started to build his house yet, and there will be more growing pains as the house gets built, but he is building a sturdy strong house that will be awesome when it's finished.

ND turned a corner last night, not just by beating USC, but by growing. They got better from game 1 to 12. They grew more this season then they have in the last 10 years. Haters will point out the "overrated mid major-Utah" and the "falling giant in SC". They will also point out Navy, Michigan, and Tulsa. There is not really much we can do, except just say "wait and see".

Those who follow the program can see that the program is moving in the right direction. The intangibles that come before winning are there, the culture of ND is changing. That losing, and folding mentality is gone, the win at SC exorcised that demon. Once this team fully understands, and can fundamentally execute Kelly's plan and philosophies, it will be dangerous, and will win...a lot.

ND will finish 8-5, and there will be a ton of buzz heading into next year, and we have to be level headed with our expectations. We all still have to be patient. ND still has a ton of work to do, and is still missing a few key pieces. The defense is going to be amazing, we are going to have more athletes next year playing 4 quarters then this year. The offense is going to take some more time, it will be another year before they have a full understanding of Kelly's offense, and the QB situation is, IMO, going to hurt the development of the offense. I would feel more comfortable if we had a definite QB with a full year of game experience heading into spring/fall. I am not so sure splitting reps is the greatest of situations.

All in all, that SC win doesn't mean much on paper, but for the psyche of this team, and the direction of this team...it's a monumental mile stone that is going to spring board this team into next season and beyond. Also, when ND wins it bowl, ND is going to get a ton of press over the off-season. People are going to debate the "resurrection" of the fighting Irish. Recruits will hear all of that, and when the media talks people listen.

How can you say we'll be 8-5 when you don't even know who we are playing yet?

It's called blind confidence and an inference that we will be playing an average ACC team in the champ sports bowl. I'd bet on us over Maryland, NC State or Miami.

I wouldn't... each of those teams provides matchup problems for us... any of the three should be a hard fought game.

ACC teams that, imo, would be a problem potentially are:

Vatech
FSU
Miami
Those teams are LOADED with speed.
The rest of the teams I think ND can, and will beat.

I'd feel confident against Miami, what with all of their turmoil... but not the other two.

NC State is sick this year. Their QB is an amazing athlete. They scare me. How they are hit and miss I'll never understand...

I've watched a lot of Maryland games this year and a couple NC State games. I personally think we would handle either team. They both had very crappy defenses in the games I've watched.

Miami has looked good in the few games of theirs I watched (such as their 31-3 dismantling of Pitt) but I think with their turmoil and terrible QB play as of late we would have a very good shot.

But all of that is just my rather uninformed opinion. Living in "ACC Country" I just have very little respect for the conference at all.

Yeah the conference is solid, not great. My worry is a mobile QB attacking our edges, that threat would cause problems for ND. Tyrod Taylor. He'd be a big problem.

Having watched State play (since I live in Charlotte, NC), I can tell you that State would not be an easy draw. The thing about them is that they are not consistent. They'll play a great game one week and then lose to Maryland (who's really not that good). However, when they play to their potential, they are explosive. They have the kind of speed on defense that can give Rees nightmares (similar to what he faced last night). I'm not concerned with Maryland or Miami. Miami has speed, but their offense is just a bunch of nonsense. Jacory Harris has a world of talent, but is playing for a lame coaching staff.

NC State has a couple of Notre Dame ties; 1- Lou Holtz coached there 1972 - 1975. 2- Jon Tenuta is the linebacker coach there now.

State can score, QB Wilson can go.

Notre Dame can handle State, Maryland. Miami has a lot of talent, their coaching could be the key there.

Appreciate the win this is my first ND win against the trojans since I was 12 years old can we celebrate for a day or two ... the last coach to beat USC good or bad was Bob Davie
This is exciting and the 15 practices will help

We took step one this year. There's still a long way to go up the mountain.

Next year is the first year that Offense is a bigger question mark than the Defense. We don't know who's coming back (Rudolph/Floyd). We don't really know who the QB is going to be. On Defense, we have a proven leader in Te'o and have a good core of players coming back. If Hendrix is the guy next year (can't imagine if its not him or Crist), then we have the "1st year" QB thing going again.

Taking the wait and see approach. Glass is more half full than half empty, but still some questions.

+.93 (I agree with about 93% of what you said). There is no denying the way we ended the scheduled season was great for this program, now, and in the future. The team is an actual TEAM for the first time in a loooooooooooooooooooooong time. The issues that ND has faced this season (on and off the field) have brought the players, coaches, student body, and fans all a little tighter. I have always been a very proud and loud fan and will continue.

How in the world can't you see Tommy Rees starting against South Florida next year while jumping to anoint Andrew Hendrix, who you've never seen play?

I have an app on my phone for bowl projections that has ND facing Maryland in the Champs Sports Bowl.

I wish we didn't face them since we're playing them next year, but things will be a bit different by next year.

Well, you're right that WE have a ton of questions for the offense next season, but I think BK and his staff know the answers to a lot of those questions. Also, I think that BK will want Floyd/Rudolph to make a decision very soon on what they are going to do with the NFL. I'd say by mid-January.

Rees is still just a kid, and I think one of the big things regarding him and the QB race is how much can he mature physically by fall camp.

He kind of reminds me of Colt McCoy with his moxy, and how young he looked coming into college. Even after McCoy was redshirted, in 2006 he looked so young.

To say that Rees is out of contention for the starting job in 2011 is ridiculous. IMO, he has a better chance of starting for the Irish against SF then Dayne.

Me too. I was hoping for a more attractive game. Maybe the bowl big-wigs will want to see a preview of Catholics vs. Convicts?
