Not a fan of the feds getting involved in college sports. If anything it just means the NCAA has lost all power

Public universities performing on a national stage. Interstate commerce on a level that would be unthinkable in the constitution-framing era. Sounds like it is an appropriate thing for our government to keep an eye on.

Well at least let the NCAA do their search before you call in the big guns, its like going to the police about a theft in a school before the school has done any investigation

I thought I heard today that it was the ncaa who asked both state and fed authorities to help out in this investigation. With his dad owning multiple churches, the ncaa would not have any power to look into the finacial records of the churches if the family didn't want them too.

I'm a believer in the concept that you are innocent until proven guilty. But I also believe that when there is smoke there's usually a fire, and there's a LOT of smoke surrounding this kid.

Listening to the new developments on ESPN... holy crap. There is a 90% chance in my mind that where there is smoke there is fire. The SEC is such a joke.

I have to admit, regardless of a win/loss record I'm so glad that I don't have to worry about ND's name being brought up over issues like this.

I wonder how long until the NCAA just starts giving the death sentence to SEC schools/USC who pull this crap. They're basically semi-pro teams.

SEC teams are the mobsters of college football

SEC teams are the mobsters of college football

There is nothing they won't do to get the great athletes. The integrity of college football is at an all time low because of the SEC and Southern Cal. No wonder the FBI sees the need to get involved.

You also have to wonder how this will be used by the Orin Hatch types of the Mountain States. Picture this; undefeated Boise St. or TCU gets left out of the championship game for a one loss SEC team. A congretional hearing on student athletes is called. "A one loss team from the cheatingest, dirtiest conference in college football " says Senator A, gets in the championship game before an undefeated, well respected TCU [or Boise St.] that follows the rules."

Then again, the Senators from Louisiana, Alabama, or Florida would then use their political power to end the discussion and nothing would change.

GO FBI!!!

SEC does what they want just like USC. However since the rggie bush stuff they are doing more to prevent this from happening.

This whole thing is unbelieveable. I think most of us are well aware of certain things that can transpire between certain recruits and universities, but wow this is really something else if in the end it is true. There is a TON of smoke here, the question is what is causing all the smoke? Should be interesting to watch how this one develops.

Here is the thing that drives me crazy about CFB is the lack of the NCAA to keep these schools in line. For example check out these numbers from the Bootleg Graduation rates: How any official at the NCAA can look past these numbers is beyond me.

Biggest Difference in Grad Rates Between Football Players and All Students
Major Programs
(Difference of 15% or more)
Football Players All Students Difference
UCLA 51% 89% -38%
Texas 49% 77% -28%
Georgia Tech 49% 77% -28%
USC 58% 85% -27%
Virginia 68% 93% -25%
Cal 64% 88% -24%
Texas A&M 55% 77% -22%
Georgia 57% 76% -19%
Maryland 60% 79% -19%
Michigan St. 56% 74% -18%
Arizona 41% 57% -16%
Oregon 49% 65% -16%
Michigan 71% 87% -16%
Oklahoma 45% 60% -15%
BYU 61% 76% -15%

Check these numbers out: Scout.com: The Bootleg's 2010 Graduation Rate Analysis

This to me is the problem with CFB besides the ridiculous Nazi style BCS.

What is so crazy about all of this is the kid is an incredible player. Why would he even put his life in jeopardy when he had a bright future as an NFL player. Those goes beyond logic this is pure insanity. Football in general is just being brought down by trash. It starts at the college level and its elevated at the NFL.

Wow, the PAC-10 finally has 5 ranked teams in a "Top" 15.

Agreed. If the allegations are true, the NCAA needs to send a message. I caught the 30/30 marcus dupree story on ESPN, and the same BS went on back then with schools offering money during recruiting. Too many seedy schools out there, with the money being thrown about, it is good to to see Law Enforcment investigating this.

What's even a bigger joke is that the SEC knew of these allegations a solid 10 months ago and we didn't hear a peep about it. That whole conference is just a laughable excuse for "college" football.

That's what's so weird about this whole thing. Mississippi St. did the exact right thing (maybe they should have reported it to the NCAA and the SEC?). You'd think that the SEC would make 100% sure that nothing improper happened. Instead, it seems like they sent a memo to any school that needed a QB letting them know that Newton was on the market.

I read this somewhere else and liked how it was all summed up...I'll paraphrase:

Cam Newton has to be really stupid. He gets recruited by Meyer to go to Florida. Who knows if he was paid to become a Gator, but we do know that he made some really stupid mistakes while in Gainesville, including the stolen computer ordeal. Newton decided to transfer after Tebow came back for his senior season, but I'm sure the three counts of academic fraud now being rumored also played a part.

So Meyer said, go to Blinn CC, get your stuff together and come back and be our starting QB when Tebow leaves.

While at Blinn, Newton blows up and wins a national championship. His Dad decides it's going to take some cash to get his son to go to a school. His relationship probably cooled with Meyer (after all he's a prick) and Newton decided he wanted to commit to Miss State because of Dan Mullen who he probably liked when he was at Florida. Papa Newton tries to get some cash to make the transfer "official" but Miss State doesn't bite and reports it to the SEC.

The SEC doesn't act on it, and Newton ends up signing with Auburn because "the money was too good."

Now 10 months later Urban Meyer isn't too happy as he's stuck with John Brantley and staring at Auburn looking to go to the title game. LSU beat Alabama, and Auburn now has the tie breaker if they lose to Bama. Florida may play Auburn in the SEC championship game.

Meyer started leaking all this information about Newton's pay-to-play and his academic fraud at UF to blow up Auburn's season.

And here we are.

Do we know this, or did that guy make the whole thing up. I can't stress enough how much I want to believe this, but really... who would let three rival schools know that they were looking for money and expect that the 2 who lost out on him wouldn't say anything about it...

As a new convert and soon to be professor of BLeHane's 'Common Sense Quadrant' I'd say if you cheat your @$$ off you probably will get caught. Welcome to the SEC. I thought they had a pact that you dont tell on fellow conference bad boys. Guess Mullen had an axe to grind. Just as LALAX said its semi pro football plain and simple.

It's all speculation really, but would you be surprised if it all came true?

Normally I wouldn't believe all this, but with the way Cam and his father have handled this whole thing, I think they might be stupid enough to have done all of it.
