Maybe some of the older guys can commenet on this but has there ever been a season that has just been so devastating?

I am not just talking about on field performance but taking everything into account.

Matt James Death
Dan Wengers career ending concussions
Kyle Rudolph out for the year
Ian Williams out for the year
Dayne Crist out for the year
Armando Allen out for the year
Declan Sullivan's death

I mean wow, this whole year has really sucked (for lack of a better word)

I was just wondering if this last 10 days had been the worst 10 day span in the history of ND football...but you're right, the label could extend towards the whole year. Don't forget that the Tulsa loss also made the ND senior class the losingest in Irish history...

Most losses for one ND class...not the losingest.

That early 1960's class was quite a deal worse.

I don't know.

But I will say this:

I was a huge CW fan and hopeful, mostly because he is an ND son. I honestly did not think his system would ever reach the top of the college world. Just my opinion. Maybe it could have.

This year, from the moment NBC put the camera directly on Kelly's face at the start of the first game, I don't think I have ever hoped my will, my prayers, some random good person's Karma, could help a coach more than Kelly. Geez, they frikken filmed the team vacation. Then he had to open the Chicago game with the first toss. Too much on his plate.

I cannot begin to imagine the load that Kelly, the proven winner is carrying right now. I hope the entire ND community and internet toughs rally behind the man at this moment.

it has definitely been a roller coaster full of more downs than ups. I'm so jaded now that i dont think i'd know a good coach if it hit me in the face, pretty much all that could go wrong for kelly in his first season has.

When CW was here he was my coach and i still wish him well, Now kelly is my coach and i stand by him.

i do not think he is in over his head, he's been doing this for 20 years, he is tasked now with navigating this ship without a mutiny and taking us to a bowl win somehow. which I think he will, theres a light at the end of the tunnel that is the 2010 season, i am sure of it.

In alot of ways this whole year has been a huge disappointment on so many different levels. I really feel for Coach BK and this program. We have had to deal with tragedy, injuries, loss of recruits and of course we have lost alot of football games we should not have lost. This year has been so frustrating and disheartening, but I think we will be ok in a couple of years. Right now I am concerned about the future and the recruiting the most. We need to try and keep our commitments from leaving and to try and bring in some more talent next year. I really find the trend of losing top quality kids the past month very troubling because the future of our program relies heavily on the recruits coming in. BK has his hands full, and he is now realizing that this will take awhile to get back to where we need to be. I wish him the best of luck, because I cannot imagine too many people wanting to be in his position right now.

I think what makes it (seem like) the worst season yet is the expectations.
I have to be honest, my expectations for Kelly and the boys were ridiculous and completely unreasonable. I was super hyped up on the articles I was reading, and all the koolaid I was feed and man oh man I just couldn't wait for the season to begin! We were going to WIN! Finally after aching years under CW we had the fix! BAM! Just add Kelly and all problems were over!

But obviously, I was a child and did not see reason or reality. Now that reality has hit me (us), it feels like a cold hard hopeless grave that I dug.
If I would've thought about it, of course this season would not be what we want (Obviously no idea it would be this bad) and it would be (hate it but true) a building year for a new regime.
So, I guess, our own expectations is what makes this season sooooooooo bad.
At least for me it does.

Also I think the Syracuse loss is worse than this loss btw.

The problem is that most of the fanbase believe we're an elite program. They want results, and rapidly.

We're not an elite program. Times have changed. Recovery will be longer than we want it to be. Firing Kelly before he has a chance to implement his full program (Year 5 or 6) would deal a devastating (possibly fatal) blow to Irish football.

Maybe i should have been more specific. I was talking more about the stuff surrounding the program like this

Matt James Death
Dan Wengers career ending concussions
Kyle Rudolph out for the year
Ian Williams out for the year
Dayne Crist out for the year
Armando Allen out for the year
Declan Sullivan's death

Has there ever been a season that has so much go wrong?

This season has sucked and just seems to be getting worse . We have had some horrible things happen on and off the field . The off field deaths don't need to be commented on I am a parent I dont know what I do if I had to bury one of my children. Now the on field stuff the best way I can relate is I grew in A huge Irish redsox family every year seemed to rip our hearts out . This year we missed playoffs while it sucked granted. It didnt ruin my Month like it once did. It's because we recently enjoyed some success real success and Notre Dame football has not done that in sometime . I can tell you though as a grown man crying in 2004 can attest too. When it happens it so much better.

I doubt there has been a season with two unrelated deaths in the ND program like this season. So this is probably a unique year in that aspect. It's really crazy how fragile life is.

As far a season's go I honestly think last season was the most disappointing of my 31 yr old life. I really believed that once Weis got his recruits matured especially along the offensive line that ND would win. Only winning 6 games last year was unbelievably disappointing. I couldn't believe that they wasted Clausen and Golden's talent like that.

To be 100% honest with all of you. I drink the kool-aid all year long. I truly beleived that we could win 9 games this year. Well it turns out this isn't going to happen. Am i devasted? Do i think this is the worst year ever? Absolutely not! It's Coach Kelly's 1ST SEASON!!!!! SEASON NUMBER 1!!!! As I mentioned before in a different thread. My kool-aid hangover wore off after the scUM game. It was after that game i was able to take a step back and look at our situation realistically...

1. We have a phenominal coach. Yes he has made mistakes but that doesn't take away his football knowledge and ability to mold this team in to a NC contender.

2. Our recruiting class is looking very nice. I only expect it to get better.

3. The amount of star players injured this year is insane... Sometimes injuries are just too big to get past...

Lastly, IMO last season was a MUCH LARGER DISSAPPOINTEMENT than this year. By far it was the worst season I have ever been around to watch. I wanted to throw up by the end of every game we lost last year becuase there was no excuse for performing that bad. Charlie's final season MUST be considered a larger dissappointement than Kellys first.

God Bless Notre Dame

To make matters worse...After beating Navy 43 straight years, Navy's senior class has beaten Notre Dame 3 out of 4 years. ouch.

Agreed. The loss to Michigan last year was agonizing, because it instantly showed me that wins weren't going to come as easy as I hoped. Then the loss to SC confirmed that it would be another mediocre season of disappointment. That's why I didn't really drink the cool aid for this season. I hoped like all fans that we would see significant improvement. But I just can't BS myself into thinking this program will win 9 or 10 games to I actually see it happening on the field week in and week out.
