Notre Dame football: Ian Williams sees the light and hopes to darken Navy's day - chicagotribune.com

Tenuta banned him from meeting last year after his comment on the Navy game.

WOW...this was an eye-opener to me...maybe I'm reading more into this than I should.

ya know...I always had this feeling the defense was self defeating last year...this little tidbit gives some form to my suspicion the self defeating wasn't just in the incessant blitz, but also in Tenutas entire approach/attitude.

Who keeps a guy out of meetings? A guy who believes the criticism, and doesn't have an answer...this is like reading documentation associated with malpractice...Geez!

Mark my words, the Navy offense is in for a far different game this year. They will not recognize the D that they are facing. Part of that transformation will be a passion that they did not see last year. IAN will be bringing his A+ game. With Carlo playing in his hometown, I expect him to go ballistic too. Don't be suprised if Navy struggles to score.

I have said it before, and many on here have as well. Charlie keeps Corwin Brown as his DC instead of bringing in Tenuta and he would still be here in South Bend. But then maybe we dont land Teo, although Brown was pivotal in recruiting what has been known as one of the best irish recruiting classes in the past two decades in the 08 class previous to Teo's 09 class... no doubt he helped in getting him here as well.

If and buts....

But seriously, Tenuta banning Williams from their meetings seems a little big egotistical IMO. Didnt know that had happened.

Definitely agree with this.

That being said, I don't care why things have finally clicked with Williams, I'm just happy that they have. 100+ pounds more on his squat and a more efficient motor? Navy's in for a whole new ballgame.

Agree with the fact that Navy will not be seeing the same ND defense. I think they probably already have an inkling based on our D's perfromance against some formidable running attacks...They will do what they do...but I think we'll see some "trickeration" from them more so than in previous years...don't get down if the trickeration has some success...because we will all know at that point that they can't beat us...

Hey ph! How you been lately buddy! Been a couple days. Don't you agree that Ian (who can, anytime) blowing up the first (fullback) option is the key to the whole day. If he shuts it down and frees lightning and thunder, (Manti and Carlo) we may never get to see Rickey Dobbs drop back to pass, or do any of that other wonderful stuff. What do you think?

...good to be BT...good to be...hope all is well

if Ian can be productive, especially early...Dobbs is exposed having to make the read on option 2 and 3...so long as Dobbs is made to pay dearly for keeping it beyond option 1 (ie he's drilled into the deck ala manti's wmu hit), I like our chances to hold them to 10 or less...I guess if Ian can't consistently collapse/plug the middle, and take away the option 1 production, we'll get fewer clean shots to ring Dobbs' bell, and we'll give up yards on play action over the middle in addition to running yards.

conversely, if effective Ian also helps take away any short to intermediate pass game in the middle 1/3 of the field because the ILBs will not be pulled up so hard on play fakes.

If it all works out for us...I see their best shot as catching one of our safeties and going over the top, maybe some out routes (although our corners are tough), or rollout QB run/pass option plays or anything designed to get our OLBs defending in space.

I also think they know we are a different D . This is why we may see some early "trickeration"...I'm actually hoping to see it...regardless of the result, they'll be telling me they don't believe they can keep up...

As well even if Ian has a mediocre day...we will still win. They can't keep up on the points side of things, and I know this defense will not fold up in the 4th.

Tenuta banned him for being critical of Tenuta('s defense). Weak personal character? A little different than ego. The more I hear, the less I like.

If you want a real mind blower; look at the stats from Minter's defenses. Other than outstanding recruiting (Other?) ND had no better defensive run post Holtz. Minter had the best numbers of any of 'em under Weiss!

PH: the front three (5) are the key then. Keep the lb's where they need to play. I don't think Ian is capable of a mediocre day! That is way below his motor at idle. Navy's ittle bitty offensive line is going to have its hands full, and the center's helmet is going to sound like: "CLANG, CLANG, CLANG!"

This upsets me...I think Tenutas attitude stinks...I remember watching his interviews...he looked pissed and annoyed at being at ND. Corwin did a much better job....

Jon Tenuta is severely overrated. He probably had some of the better talent he's ever had and probably produced one of the worst defenses in Notre Dame history.

And, apparently, an arrogant ***. First said that we had no defensive talent (without even fathoming the possibility that it was his ****ty defensive scheme that doomed our defense), and now we hear he banned Williams from team meetings for having the balls to state the obvious.

Also i don't think this offense is as good as they were last year. I think last year they averaged like 320 Rushing a game this year thay are at like 255. That will help us as well.

I think they only scored 3 on Air Force. That makes me a bit more comfortable heading into this week's game.

Thanks for your contributions, Ian. Methinks you have seen his last game in an ND uniform.

What a shame. Do we know the extent of the injury?
