Good Luck Dan!!! The brain is nothing to mess with. Glad that football players and coaches are becoming more cautious about this stuff.

That ND education will take you on to a successful life.

wish him the best of luck. If it as serious as they say then he doesn't need to be on field. life is way to short to put him back out there and mess the rest his life up.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame fifth-year senior center Dan Wenger won't play this season following two concussions in preseason camp.

Wenger, of Coral Springs, Fla., was evaluated by a specialist at the University of Michigan on Wednesday. Neither the specialist nor the school cleared Wenger to return, coach Brian Kelly said Thursday.

Wenger, who has appeared in 29 games during his career with 19 starts, has not played this season and his career could be over. Braxston Cave is the starter at center.

Kelly said it is unclear if Wenger would apply or be eligible for a sixth year, although it has been discussed. Kelly said he would check with the school's compliance department.

Kelly also announced Thursday that Nick Tausch will kick off Saturday against Pittsburgh, while sophomore David Ruffer will continue kicking field goals.

Ruffer, a walk-on who is 13-for-13 on field goals over two seasons, had also been handling kickoff duties. He beat Tausch out for the starting kicker's job in camp although Tausch set the school record by making 14 straight field goals last season.

Sorry to hear about him not being able to play, but at least they were able to stop him before he got even more hurt. Football is just a game, and in the end we all end up stop playing for one reason or another. The important thing here is that he is healthy and that he has the rest of his life to live and I hope it is a great one. With a degree from Notre Dame he will be able to explore so many different options in life and he is set up for success for that. Best of Luck to a great young man.

Does anyone know if he could apply for a medical redshirt to get a 6th season of eligibility?

The reason BK is checking with compliance is because he will have missed two years (out of five). If medical conditions cost him both years, he could be allowed another (sixth) year. The problem isn't with this year, it is whether the NCAA considers his hand injury medical (making him eligible) or a red-shirt year, (not allowing an additional year). And beyond that, he still would have to be cleared to return by ND.
