As a long standing fan in Ireland, I was wondering will there be many stateside making their way to Dublin for the recently announced game in 2012 ( long way off I know !!! ). I can't wait as it will probably be my only chance to see my heroes in the flesh . I was wondering will there be many coming over ?

Go raimh maith agat !!!

My wife and I are definitely going to do our best to make the trip happen. Would love to be able to put it together, but it is a long way off. I'll buy the first round of pints if you recommend some good pubs!

My cousin has a legitimate shot at making the Olympics (he won nationals this year at 211.5 in freestyle wrestling) in London which end like 2-3 weeks before this game. I'm hoping to make a six week vacation out of it. :D

Come hell or high water I will be over there. I am 1/4 Irish so not only do I get to see the IRISH play in Ireland, but I get to see the old homeland.
FYI, I went to Expedia the other day just to see what it was gona cost. For a 4 day stay with airfare was about $1300. So if anyone was curious that’s what I found so you at least can get a ballpark estimate.

I'm going to the game with my family. It'll be my first time in Ireland. Really pumped for this.

I know you're in Donegal, Davy and that Shark could be in Derry for all I know, but regardless, you're both a helluva lot closer to Dublin than any of us stateside.

I want to suggest that those going to the game look into staying at B&B's rather than hotels. It could prove less expensive. Years ago I spent 3 weeks in Ireland with only two nights in a hotel. I found it delightful.

Perhaps you could recommend one or two or at least provide a reliable web site to search.

Dshans, just curious...why did you prefer the B&B's over the hotels?!

It was "cozier." A more personal contact with both the locals and other travelers. Conversation at breakfast and afternoon tea, if you're there at the time. I went with coffee since tea (cough, cough) "is not my cup of tea." Part of it, for me, is that I'm second generation Irish American. My paternal grandparents were immigrants so I wanted to get as close to "Irish" as I could. A Hilton is a Hilton is a Hilton.

I spent time in my Grandfather's home town of Castleisland and met with some relatives. It was a gas (dated saying, I know) walking down the street and seeing business after business with my family name attached: pub, law office, general goods store, etc.

To put it in a hippie-dippie way, I felt that I was IN Ireland and not just stopping by. Dive in, head first, and soak up all that you can.

Oh, and did I mention that it was less expensive? At the time, at least. Package deals may alter the arithmetic. I was there for an extended period and some spots I explored had few or no hotels. Go with your gut and your budget.

Look at it this way: Sleep cheap and party hardy. You're there to watch a football game as well as to take in a bit of the local culture and atmosphere while there. Why waste time and money in a setting that's far too similar to one in Omaha?

I'll have a look tomorrow and post anything I can find that may be of use to you guys ;-)

I'm in Wexfordso no expert on Dublin but know plenty of Dubs so closer to the time could probably get ya a list of good B&B's

Bed and Breakfast Ireland - Dublin, Ireland B&B, Accommodation in Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Galway and all over Ireland

heres a good site to find other things to do also, lists upcoming festivals aswell

Heritage Ireland

Sorry shark83, hadn't seen your post - prob best to leave it closer the time as ( the way things are going now ) you could book a b+b now and it mightn't even be there by the time the game comes. Would agree b+b is the way to go though - brings you closer to the people AND leaves some €uro's for partying with ;-)

Use the head, keep the feet for dancing !!

Thanks, Davy. Good to know that you agree with my take on B&Bs vs hotels. Good point on the risk involved with booking a B&B too far in advance.

"Use the head, keep the feet for dancing!!" is outstanding. It reminds me of a line from the movie/book Zorba the Greek – "What is there left for a man to do, filled with either joy or sorrow, but to DANCE."*

*I know that I probably screwed up the line, but my version captures the essence.

I'd love to say it was something as grand as that, but alas, its just a saying we use here ...lol

Eloquence does not require grandiosity. It most often abhors it.

Both sayings are "on point" and involve the value of a physical release to the realities of life.

To mangle a saying from Australia, "Good on ya, mate."

I was there last March for a couple of days. Did Guinness and the Jameson Distillery back-to-back.
Needless to say, it was a very inebriated day for yours truly.
Heard the Irish are in financial disarray. Perhaps we could all donate some Vbucks in exchange for Guinness?

We're no worse than anybody else, our problem is that we're honest about it ...
