Notre Dame football: Hughes moves to two | WSBT - News, Weather, Sports South Bend | Notre Dame Sports

While watching Stanford’s 37-14 conquest of Notre Dame last Saturday with his 14-year-old son, Joe, Tribune reader John Breslin of Barrington, Ill., noticed Notre Dame junior center Braxston Cave “tipping” Stanford to the Irish snap count.

He wasn’t alone. Sure enough, the Cardinal noticed it too.

Kelly is addressing it with his first-year starter this week.

“There are some growing pains there,” Kelly said. “The one thing we need with Braxston is a little bit better job at cadence, and he's a little too consistent with some of the things that he does that gives the defense a chance to, as you saw against Stanford, they did a pretty good job of film study.

“They knew when Braxston was going to snap the ball. He's got to be more firm with his snaps. His snaps have not been very good.

No wonder the O Line looked so bad against Stanford!

Its good to know, but only part of the problem. There have been problems with the scheme and knowing who to block. This has been evident with both the lines and the backs.

Okay so I am trying to figure out what "Tipping" is EXACTLY. It obviously something Cave is doing but does anyone know WHAT exactly he's doing or what "Tipping" means?

Think Poker. I think they're saying that Cave has a "Tell." "Tipping" as in tipping off.

Thats what I figured but I'm trying to find out WHAT he's doing. Is he looking up right before he snaps? Is he looking in a certain direction? Is he doing something with his hand?

What I saw was he would tuck his left hand, look up, then snap. I didn't study it too hard, but it was often.

There were a couple of times during the game that I thought they knew the snap count, but I didn't notice anything and didn't really question it. At least the coaching staff has realized it. Hopefully we can have some better protection if we get this solved.

Any thread that has both Neutered [especially in character disguise] AND dshans has got to be a winner. Hopefully we learned something too. [now, c'mon coach, correct the weight-room monster's flaw!!].

It actually was blatantly obvious esp. during the first quarter, then I quit paying so much attention. Cave would peak between his legs, tuck his left arm as he looked up, and within a second after looking up would snap automatically. Peak, tuck, up, snap. Peak, tuck, up, snap. Like clockwork. Stanford blitzers quickly learned to take off right on cue and DC had no choice but to rush his reads. It completely threw off the offense and it could be argued that that is the single biggest reason Stanford stole all momentum and damaged the offensive rhythm and confidence. I'm surprised the staff didn't catch it quicker. I am surprised the defensive staff didn't point out that blaring weakness at practice.
