How Much Longer Can ND Stand to be Independent?

No I don't, but like phork said, if we do, the Big Ten is the geographic fit.

No. (1) We would lose our status as a BCS conference for voting and rule-making purposes. (2) We would potentially jeopardize rivalries with Army, Navy, USC and, to a lesser extent, BC. (3) We would be less differentiated from Purdue, Michigan and Ohio State for recruiting and recognition purposes. (4) I really like that we're playing in Soldier Field, Yankee Stadium and Dublin. I'm not totally sure on this one but I suspect our ability to do this would be lessened. I also like the flexibility of being able the schedule The U and Oklahoma (or anyone else for that matter).

No, and if we do I want it to be the Big East.

I suppose I could just look it up, but what's ND lax do in terms of conference? I know hockey gets to be in the CCHA which seems like it makes much more sense than basketball playing in the Big East.

I don't really like the idea. Indepenent as long as possible as long as it is in our best interest. If the super conference talk starts up again, we'll need to get onboard at that point.

Yea...Texas and Oklahoma really saved us from making a decision by staying put in the Big 12.

Yeah, the super conference with Texas is the only way I would want ND in a conference. How many National Titles has the Big Ten won in the last 40 yrs? Not many?

We were in the GWLL (Great Western Lacrosse League) with Ohio State, Denver, Air Force, Quinnipiac and Bellarmine until last year.

Last season was the first year of Big East lacrosse and it is worlds different than the GWLL. Playing some of the "east coast elite" (i.e. Syracuse (BE), Georgetown (BE) and Duke (ACC)) instead of under-talented Midwest teams is the only reason we made the tournament last year and had the opportunity to make a run to the national championship.

YES! Its the only way we are ever relevant again. Every week we get F U C K E D by refs. I'm not saying they are causing us to lose but they dont help.

Notre Dame will always be 6-6, or 7-5 with a bcs sprinkled in from time to time but we will NEVER be unbeaten again with the way we schedule.

Face it people. We wont be like we used to be under Holtz unless we join a conference.

To play Devil's advocate... is it our lack of conference or our schedule that is the problem?

Both! But as of right now its the schedule. I can tell you right now that next year we lose at least 4 games, the year after that we lose at least another 4 games. The year after that????? Our schedule gets tougher and tougher every year and until we have 8 teams with some patsies like the big boys do then we will always be a mediocre team. Its plain as day.

i think we should join the big ten. as far as losing nbc i thinik they could work something out as that goes. i mean texas has all kind of perks to stay were they were. the old days are over and it's time to try and start back winning again and i think this is the best way to get back to it but it won't happen until there's is no other option.

We would make WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more joining the big ten. The big ten network pays each team a crap load of money. I dont remember what the exact number is but we would make a TON more by joining the big ten. This whole independence this is starting to grow old. Why can we be Big East in every other sport EXCEPT football? Stupid. Join already.

TV revenue for each school last year was approx. $22 million, big increase each year since the Big10 Network was formed.

Go to the Big East, and have the Big East add Navy (would they be able to do that?). Then we get a rival, and the conference has 10 teams. Navy is also a good geographical fit, and they always have a hard-working team.

I was listening to an ESPN pod cast in regards to the secret Big Ten expansion meeting in D.C. and they are certain that the Big Ten will expand out to 14. This was an updated pod cast as of 10pm last night. Now the discussion focused on what ND's future would possibly look like. The AD has came out and stated that "times are changing," and if the Big Ten doesn't pull in ND, then the Big Ten will certainly pull in Big East conference schools. The Big East is going to want to replace those schools and ND is already in the Big East for every sport outside of football. It would be easy for the Big East to give ND the all or nothing scenerio.

Any thoughts on how joining a BCS conference would be good or bad for Notre Dame?
Dont take this as a slam jrmurrey honestly I dont mean any malice but listening to espn (notice small caps) may be the problem. Look this scenario is simple get some tough guys who are nasty (thats right I said the nasty word) on the field and win football games. If Notre Dame wins they are in any discussion at the end of the season. If they play finesse/soft football they not only lose games but they are out of the discussion. This must be too simple to understand. The players needed are just not there yet. Kelly knows this. His quest is getting the right kind of guys in here-and it does not mean guys who are just good people. You can be good people off the field on it you better be a rather unpleasant fellow to be around. They are not there yet. Ara/Lou knew this and their players would hit you in the face. As I said many times this is a dirty nasty game played successfully be dirty nasty young men ON THE field. Notre Dame will never be the same until this riddle is solved. Being in a conference has nothing to do with it.

I feel like i have typed this so many times. ND will stay independant as long as they can schedule a complete competitive schedule. So ND will remain Indpeendant for a good 4-6 more years gauranteed
