So, do Goodman and Hughes get into the rotation now?

I thought Goodman looked great on Saturday: ran clean routes, caught everything thrown his way, and got a few YACs when he could. Personally, I think he starts over TJ for a few weeks and starts returning kick-offs as well as punts.

As for Hughes, tougher to say. He didn't make an appearance till border-line garbage time. He doesn't really have the lateral quickness for the Kelly spread. On the other hand, he does have the best hands of all the ND RBs and he can pass block. Which I'm sure Dayne would appreciate.

So, in sum...there is now a defense on film that stops the spread (rush 3, drop 8, still get pressure anyways). Goodman (a good possession receiver) and Hughes (a good pass-protection/pass-catching back) seem like good tools for defeating that particular coverage. Thoughts?

Without question, Hughes might not have the speed Kelly likes for his backs, but the dude can pick up a blitz! Get Hughes in there. He can also put a hurting on the D early in the game and maybe wear them down for the speedier Allen and Wood.

I'm amazed it took Goody this long to get on the field. There is no question he should be on the field, but he is more of a possession receiver right now, and that may not be what we're looking for. He's got the speed to take the top off, but I'm not sure he has the open field moves. So I think they have it right with him in the rotation alongside T.J.

I see what your saying here. The way I see us beating this is more 3-7 yard plays, Dayne running, and better blocking on the O line. I think its rediculous that we would need to put in a better pass blocking back to help stop a 3 man rush. So many things can be said on what we need to change to beat the defensive set like that.

As for me I would personally like to see Hughes get in on some of the short yardage plays and in the red zone more. Dayne under center for some sneaks, etc. I feel like we make bad play calls in these situations. They are bad because we dont excute. So go with the bread and butter for the 3 or 4 yards we need.

Thats my thoughts

Goodman - Yes. He had 5 catches on Saturday, more than TJ Jones has had in the last two games combined.

Hughes - No. Two receptions in garbage time does not equate to a big role in this offense.

True, it was garbage time, but he can run inside, where the majority of our rushes go. A huge and often overlooked stat is that the dude can pick up a blitz! Gray, last year and this year, cannot pick up a blitz. Wood hasn't had good blitz protection this year either. Hughes is not as slow as everyone thinks, so he should get a shot, especially with the way Wood and Gray are playing.

Goodman is a nice possesion receiver..Jones very solid. He runs good routes and can block. I rather have Jones in there.

Guys have to earn PT and that is what Goodman has done. The problem is Goodman plays the same position as Floyd so if Goodman is in Floyd is not

The O-Line isn't picking the blitz up enough to run deep routes so the pass is basically short throw allowing the defense to stuff the box and blitz almost every down. This takes Floyd, Jones, and Rudy out of the game completely. For what we are getting out of the run, I think Hughes needs to be brought in to help block and he can get the same output the running game is getting because the backs are not fast enough to get to the corner with the blocking the way it is going. The line is not set up to pull and block the corners because Weis didn't game plan for that. The current line is set up to block straight up and only hold the block for short burst because Weis called screens and draws all day long.

Goodman split time with T.J. this last game.

Each reciever in Kelly's offense plays a specific position

X reciever: TJ and Kamara and Bennet Jackson

Z (Slot) Reciever: Riddick, Toma

W Reciever: Floyd, Goodman, Walker

If Floyd and Goodman were on the field together that means someone messed up becuase the positions are not interchangable in Kelly's offense

Go watch Kelly's interview from yesterday on University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site. Kelly specifically said that Goodman has started to play well in practice so he split time with T.J. I know he was Floyd's position, but apparently not anymore. It's not a quantum leap to go from W to X. They are interchangeable, or else Floyd wouldn't line up in the slot, and Theo would never line up on the outside like he sometimes does.
