I agree, if it was a matter of only wearing them less than 10 times ever, and we won those games-different story.
I disagree...whether they won or lost in those jerseys really doesn't matter, imo. They served to pump up the team and the fans, that's about it...there was no guarantee of a win by wearing a certain jersey color. Last time I checked ND's all-time record, I didn't see an asterisk denoting games lost while wearing a green jersey.
I think it went downhill with CW....first time for USC at home, huge game. Great call. Next time, Army because the seniors wanted it? Eh, not such a great call. Last time, vs USC to honor the '77 team. Probably directed from above. Nice to honor the '77 team but really not necessary (except that the merchandising whizzes had a whole line of '77 gear you could buy). Weis flat out used it too many times and now it's become so commonplace that it means nothing any more....and even had we won wearing them the last "10 or so tries", I'm sure we'd still be seeing it this year and probably every season from now on. Merchandising demands it. Better would be to forget about it until we get in a big game again....ahh, but you can't sell a ton of replicas like that. Let's trot em out as often as we can.
Maybe you're right.....maybe there's no chance of them ever being special again....with the caveat that win/loss record means squat.
Much better than VT wearing all black and orange Nike Combat uniforms to "honor the miners", or FSU wearing them to "honor the Seminole Indians"
Except that at neither of those schools, are they even remotely a tradition.
