Alright, the talk in the Barry Sanders Jr. thread got me thinking. Who is the best running back in the history of the pro's or just in your lifetime.

I am biased, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders. In that order.

Sweetness, without a doubt. Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, and Eric Dickerson would be on my list. There were so many greats who I loved to watch play the game, that listing them is just incredibly complicated.

Best I've ever seen is Barry Sanders....One that might not get mentioned much but was an absolute freak of nature. If he would have not gotten hurt maybe would have been unstoppable..

Bo Jackson

Barry Sanders , Jim Brown, and on side note Emmit Smith is way overrated.

I could not disagree more. Top 5 back easy.

Payton, Sanders, and Smith are mine. Bo knew football. Damn. No doubt rediculous potential. All four were different runners. No one can take from Emmit his style of running.

I respect your opinion but Smith was a product of his line. Not to say he wasn't a good back but, if you put Brown or Sanders anywhere on any team they were gonna be great . The Cowboys whole line line went to pro bowl so Emmit Smith top 15 maybe I just cant see putting him over Curtis Martin,O.J Simpson, Gale Sayers, Bo jackson,Eric Dickerson, bronko nagurski , Earl Campbell, Red Grange,Walter Payton, Marshall Faulk,LADAINIAN TOMLINSON ( who I hate) , Jim Thorpe. Sorry I feel Jerry Jones bought his greatness.

I never saw them play live but from tape I have watched and what I have read about them Jim Brown #1 and Gale Sayers #2. Saw Barry Sanders and Emmit play they would be 3 and 4.

In no particular order, my top 3 are: Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Emmit Smith. Wait, how many was that?

A friend of mine, who spent his whole football career stopping running backs and I had this conversations a couple of weeks ago over a beer:

All around, Gayle Sayers, he could do things nobody else even dreamed of doing. He did not regularly have a good offensive line.

Jim Brown, he was bigger and stronger than the linemen were, and faster than any of the backs. His yardage was gained in 12 (4) and 14 (5) game seasons, and he walked away from football, after nine seasons, having made the Pro Bowl all nine seasons, Pro Bowl MVP 3 times, and NFL MVP 3 times. Also, 126 touchdowns in 118 games is not to shabby!

Barry Saunders, he also walked away at the height of his career, but he excelled with an average at best o-line, and a game plan where everyone knew he was getting the ball.

As to Payton and Smith, they were both journeymen. Their bodies stayed healthier longer than anyone else’s did, during their playing time. They were both awesome players, but neither quite on par with the three above. Both had among the best lines, Smiths hogs were incredible, maybe the best line ever, don’t you think?

For me, I would like to see someone from the famed Steelers, or undefeated Dolphins on the list, just for the hell of it: Frenchy Fuqua, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Jim Kiick, Mercury Morris, or Larry Csonka. See they had a style you just don’t see any more!

Also, OJ need to be added to the conversation. I know, I know! But he did push the envelope forward, and until Eric Dickerson eclipsed his record, that was the next step in the evolution. As far as performance, ED is up near the top too. probably between Payton and Smith.

My biased opinion...

1. Walter - People forget how bad the Bears were early in his career. He's also possibly the most complete football player ever. He could run, block, throw a pass, punt, catch a pass...The guy was unreal. And his longevity was as good as it gets.

2. Barry - Unbelievable moves, but lost too many yards to be #1.

Next group: Bettis, E. Smith, and Jim Brown. Didn't see Brown live...clips are amazing...people place him 1 or 2 most often.

Would love to place Sayers (The Kansas Comet - Rock Chalk...) higher, but he just didn't do it for long enough...
