Why doesn't Notre Dame play more night games at home? We play almost all of our home games games at 3:30 EST. Yet, most of our road games are at night. Army, Michigan State, and USC are all night games, and the BC game has yet to announce a time. So, why don't we play night games at home?

usually its an NBC thing, it also helps with the gameday schedule (players mass, band performance ect.) however i could see them simply moving everything to a little later in the day. A night game at ND would be awesome, especially if it were against a major rival or highly ranked opponent

It is simply the NBC contract. If my memory serves me correctly, games were always 1:30 or 2:30... I'm surprised they're all 3:30 this year. It is something the students always complained about.

You would think NBC could make more money if they did 1 or 2 night games, although a big problem is then they go up against the "game of the week" on ABC and another big game on ESPN

I, for one, miss the 1 PM start times. I liked the fact I could return to the car after the game and continue the "Tailgate party" in the daylight. I feel like I am rushed to leave after the game.

2 reasons..

1) It cuts into NBC prime time shows, everybody has to get their dose of Law and order reruns and plus SNL which hasn't been good in a for a long time..

2) The campus doesn't want to deal with the trouble after the game disperses like drunk fans acting a fool..

I like night games. It keeps the 1950s fans at home. You know the old people who don't want to get up and cheer on the team.

AMEN! hell lets have kickoff at 9:00 at night, well past their bedtimes! Or from 6-11 am so theyll all be at Old Country Buffets early bird special.

I've heard many reasons.

First, tradition. The Cubs famously refused to play night games and did not install lights at Wrigley until I believe MLB forced them to do so when they finally made the playoffs in 1988.

The thinking was that baseball was meant to be played in "God's light" and that batters have always had to pick up the ball from the pitcher in the sun and not in artificial light.

With football, it's not as tradition bound, but you always hear how people love the Irish coming out of the tunnel with the sun sparkling on their gold helmets.

Second, NBC does have a big say. If I'm not mistaken I believe they paid for the installation of the lights at ND Stadium and may also pay for them whenever they are turned on. I'm not sure how much it costs to have them on for a whole game, but I don't think it would surprise a lot of people if a big part of it was NBC being cheap. Nevertheless, the lights are used for many 4th quarters during the season when the sun evnetually goes down, especially later in the season.

Lastly, wasn't there a big concern from the school about having students and fans tailgating all day? I seem to remember there being strong objections to night games because the school didn't want the atmosphere to turn into Death Valley in Baton Rouge.

I think in the end it's a combination of all three factors. Although there have been a few night games in the past during the Holtz era.

There should be one or two night games a year at home. Day games are nice and everything, but there's just something about watching a game under the lights. It gives it more of that "stage" feeling like you're watching high drama at a theater, you know?

SNL has been awesome for the past three or four years, I don't know what you're talking about.

I hate the 3:30 kickoffs. It's too long to wait on gameday. I'd rather have noon-1pm or just make it a night game. Oh well.

That is never what I said. And you should really watch your attitude.

Notre Dame doesn't play any home games at night because of the NBC contract. The NBC contract only applies to Notre Dame home games and one of the stipulations in it is that games are started at the aforementioned times in the afternoon and not at night. My source on this is Notre Dame SID Sean Carrol who I spoke to on this very subject last winter.

Neutral site and away games do not fall under this umbrella. Away games are typically subject to the TV agreement the host school has. Rights to neutral site games are typically sold on a game by game basis. Any network that wants the rights can bid on the rights to that game similar to how the TV rights to the Super Bowl work.

With respect to the Washington St. game, NBC procured the rights to broadcast that 7 PM game completely independently of the ND home football contract.

So let me reiterate my point that is 100% correct and responds directly to the question asked: the reason ND doesn't play any home games at night is because of the NBC contract. Have a nice day.

PS. I know my shit.

I like to tailgate in the dark as well as the light.

wrong again young grasshopper...read up on the NBC contract.

Notre Dame agrees to five-year extension with NBC - College Football - ESPN

This contract calls for seven homes games per season and an eighth offsite home game played at a neutral stadium. The offsite game will begin next year against Washington State on Oct. 31, 2009, in San Antonio, Texa

My neighbor is the Administration assistant for Jack S. She said this question was brought up during a lunch meeting and the answer was that their is a lot of ND alum from the greater Chicago land area. Most complained about getting a hotel room so they wanted an earlier game time so that they can get back at a decent time.. Remember folks they donate lots of MONEY!!!

for a 12:30 game time move to California.

for a 12:30 game time move to California.

When you are in the Pacific time zone game time is not too early for the game watch and you go home in the light! nothing like a 3 hour local time shift.

Warning: Old Fart Story dead ahead.

When I was a freshman at ND in '70 I was required to take one class that met Saturday mornings. As I recall (subject to error and fogginess, as always) mine was scheduled for 10 AM. Bad enough, but when there was a home football game the time shifted to 8 AM to accommodate a 1 PM game time. Cruel and Unusual Punishment in my book.

Had my Saturday class been PE it would have been no big deal. Dogging an hour of swimming or handball, hung over and sleep deprived after a Friday kegger, pep rally and further game "preparation" wouldn't have affected my "real" GPA.

Unfortunately, my "Saturday" class was Calculus. Ouch!

It would be nice to see a few nighttime starts... but there have been a handfull of games in the last five or so years that have gone well into the night... just from memory, a couple of SC games, Tennessee 05, I think Army 06 did as well... so it's not like every ND home game is over by the afternoon.

washington 09 anyone? but when my sister was in college (at st marys) it was nice, we would go to the game, then go to her on campus apartment to watch ABC's big game did that for all of 05 and 06. But now i would like a late start time for 1 or 2 games, while it may be harder for some of the Chicago Domers, it would generate demand for more hotels in the SB area, or heck build a nice commuter rail (call it the Golden line) right into downtown southbend from chicago!

That game started at 3:30 EST, but overtime made it run late.

I wouldn't be able to watch college football on the West Coast. I wouldn't mind ND at 12:30, but I also like the 12:00 EST games. And I'm not waking up at 6:00 AM to watch College Gameday.

ND vs. Washington State was a home game, for ND. That's why NBC televised it.

I stand corrected. My source said they play all of the games in the afternoon because that is what's in the contract... I guess I inferred that to mean NBC wanted the games played then but it seems like that is more what the University wants.

I'm the first to admit when I'm wrong. +1 rep for the insight. Thanks.

Because of this: YouTube - Crowd Noise disrupts 1988 ND-Michigan game

Not really, but, damn, that crowd was loud. Poor UM QB, looking to his coach for help.

Anyway... First time posting here.

I've heard on I.I.(where this is discussed a few times a year) that there was a death involving sdome students many years back and there hasn't been a night game since.
