1) i don't like BK calling floyd overhyped. first , he was out half the year with an injry and still racked up serious numbers. second, it's good he praised floyd's hard work but he should send charlie weis a damn gift basket for getting floyd. i'm not sure if this was BK trying to movtivate floyd or telling the media his first impression of floyd was wrong, but i didn't like the way that came off. not at all. and that's the only thing he's said in 9 months i haven't liked.

2) shocked he announced anything relative to wildcat since practices are closed off, let alone who would be in that backfield. why let that cat out of the bag?

He had good reason. Michael Floyd was not the player Kelly wanted when he got here. On almost all of Floyd's catches, he's either getting open by using his body or he's given a massive cushion and just runs an out with several yards of space to spare. There is not a lot of route running there.

Take off the green-tinted glasses and think realistically. Of the 70+ passes thrown to Michael Floyd last season, over 50 were outside the hashmarks. Floyd's route tree was incredibly limited.

1. Deep fade
2. Fade
3. Swing
4. Out
5. Crossing route
6. Post (extremely rare)

Five routes. Of those, probably 60% of them were outs.

Remember Pitt in 2008. Floyd had about 7-8 catches in the first half. ONE of them was not an out route, and would it surprise you to learn that he scored on that play?

It was the same with Golden, wasn't it? He ran out routes all the time.

Golden is not in this offense. He may not have to run all of these fast, precise routes, but Floyd does.

Golden also scored several times by catching the ball on a crossing-type pattern on the run and making like a running back.

Here's a collage of all his TDs from last year. Lots of outs, but not exclusively so. Plenty of go routes, crossing patterns, fades, and a post or two, I think...

Fade, out, deep fade, run, cross, deep fade, slant, out, out, wildcat run, hail mary, cross, out, punt return, play-action cross, out, deep fade, out.

One fade.
Six outs.
Three deep fades.
Two wildcat runs.
Three crossing routes.
One slant.
One hail mary.
One punt return.

Golden scored on twice as many outs than the next closest candidate...deep fades and crossing routes (basically out routes reversed to the middle of the field). In fact, deep fades and out routes make up HALF of Golden's touchdowns, which makes sense considering 80% of Golden's routes were outs and deep fades.

Thanks. I did the same thing, but mistook some of the deep fades for go routes and the slant for a post. I also wasn't sure if a couple of the crosses were maybe improvisations where he broke off his route after Jimmy scrambled.

its his management style, or coaching style. If you remember, a couple months ago he said Te'o 'didnt play well at all last year'. He publically put those 2 players on blast because they are the best players/leaders on the team. By blasting the most talented players, the goal is to motivate everyone else to work hard as well.

The Wildcat...I just read an article on ISD where Molnar states they have no installed the full offense but they are close to having enough for a full game. Kelly stated they are working on the Wildcat, or will eventually doesn't mean they will week 1 or 2. But it still gives Purde something to think about and prepare for whether he does have it installed for week 1 or week 3. Kelly's offense and complicated so the full installation may not be until a few games into the season. Just my 0.02

The deep fade is a go route, IMO. The go route under Weis was essentially a deep fade, a lobbed ball that a receiver could make a play on by outjumping the competition.

Was the excessive use of out routes last year by design [coaching],or by choice [QB]?
