I've had this discussion with Gator fans before and they claimed the Southern Strategy started with Spurrier and that the Syracuse game had been scheduled before he was hired and he said, "Never again."

I never looked back to earlier decades.

I took a look at the grand total of potential cold weather road games (didn't research the actual game conditions) that Florida played in over their history (outside of fellow SEC opponent Kentucky):

Army: Oct '23 & Nov '24 [0-2]
BC: Oct '38 & '39 [1-1]
Chicago: Oct '26 & '30 [1-1]
Harvard: Nov '22 & '29 [0-2]
Indiana: Nov '16 [0-1]
Maryland: Oct '34 '37 '39 '41 '42 [1-4]
Northwestern: Sep '65 (how cold could it have been?) [1-0]
Rutgers: Oct '86 [1-0]
Syracuse: Oct '31 & Sep '91 [0-2]
Temple: Oct '37 [0-1]
Tulsa: Oct '49 [1-0]
Villanova: Oct '40 '42 [0-2]

Out of conference cold weather game record: 6 - 16

* Note: most Oct games were played in the first week.

I knew Florida was a bunch o' cold weather pansies... but I didn't realize they were *that* bad! It looks like a certain "bad-ass" SEC team needs to purchase some insulated jocks in bulk and man-up for a change.

Living in Husker land it would have to be Nebraska for me. Our last two losses to them left a bitter taste in my mouth, not to mention thats all i hear about when im walking around in my blue/gold.

I'd love to see us schedule like a 10 game series with Tennessee.
Theyve always given us a good series, and I think theyre on their way back up just like us.

Either you live in Knoxville and want ND to come down or you're smoking real good stuff. Tennessee has some real bad depth issue and I see Derek Dooley producing 6 to 8 win seasons.

You could tell the Husker fans that only REAL teams stay independent. All the other teams are pansies for having to join a conference because they can't hack it being on their own.

That'll learn 'em!

You are in the minority but your point is valid. Contrary to ND fan myth ND has not always played the #1 schedule. Look at Rockne's schedules and you see teams that MAC teams don't schedule. Look at Parshegian's schedule. ND played a suicide schedule under Leahy in '43 and went 9-1.

During Leahy's Run in '46 - '49 Lost NONE, Tied ONE. 36-0-2 but in those 4 years they only played 10 ranked teams.

'46 a #17, #1, and #16 in the 4th, 6th, and 9th games of the season.
'47 a #9 and a #3 in the 6th and 9th games.
'48 a #8 in the 8th game. The tie was unranked Southern Cal.
'49 a #4, #10, NS #17 in the 4th, 6th, and 9th games.

Notice the big games are spaced out, not back to back. None before the 3rd week of the season.

Fans rave about the Parshegian Miracle in '64 going from 2-7 to 9-1. Devore's '63 squad faced 5 ranked teams a #6, #7, #4, #8, and another #4. The #6 was in an opener, a Lose, the #7 was a win over Southern Cal, the #4, #8, and # were played in 3 consecutive weeks. In '64 Ara played NO RANKED Teams. N.B. From '62 - '67 the AP only ranked 10 Teams.

Devine's NC season in '77 he faced 3 ranked teams, a #7 in the opener, #5 in game 6, and #15 in game 9.

Holtz schedules in '86 had 5 ranked teams, 4 in the Top 10. The '88 NC Undefeated season played a #9 the first week, #1 in week 6 and #2 in the 12 game. '89 had 6 Top 17 teams, 4 in the Top 9 and ND lost one game. Substitute a Top 30 - 50 team NOT a Div 1AA school for the last game of the season and ND wins back to back NCs.

Look at Oklahoma's school or Nebraska in the 70's they played each other and generally 9 almost automatic wins.

Look at Bama schedules under Bear Bryant and they rarely if ever played two big games in consecutive weeks.

Check Holtz schedule in '96. He only faced 3 ranked teams #6 Texas, #4 OSU, and #16 UW but did so in 3 consecutive weeks. ND faced those same 3 teams the year before as #13, #7, and #15 again in 3 straight weeks. Both years ND lost the middle game to OSU. Incidentally in '95 after that 3 week gauntlet ND eaked out a one point win over Army (Covington tackle I believe). In '96 after that same 3 week run, ND lost to Air Force in OT.

Also keep in mind back in those day there were no 85 scholarship limitations. Holtz was the first ND coach that had to deal with that. With 85 scholarships injuries become critical.
Remember Joe Montana being the #7 QB at ND? Teams were deep in those days.

N.B. I didn't factor in bowl games as they are not regular season scheduled games.

Beating 7 or 8 ranked teams in a season is exciting. Scheduling 7 or 8 ranked teams is bad scheduling, particularly with a BCS selection format.

Good stuff.

You can add many of Osborne's Nebraska teams to that list... they drove me nuts most years... play no one but OU (who were not always good during the Osborne years) a bunch of in conference patsies and maybe one average out of conference game surrounded by D-2 teams... the years they DID play someone out of conference (or when one of their oppenents just happened to get good quick fomr the time the scheduled them to the time they played them, ala Arizona St 96) they usually lost...

Yet people still wonder why they played in and lost so many bowl games that could have won a National Title... I like Nebraska... but those days drove me nuts. It just seemed every three years at least they would just walk into a National Title Circumstance...

BTW, I would add Wabash, Carnegie Mellon, Princeton, Kalamazo, Morningside and Mount Union

id like to see all of the old power schools set up some games, ND and tex (happening) ALA and ND (almost hppnd) or how bout the OLD OLD power schools, ND v Harvard, set up a home and home with Princeton? Dshans, being the oracle, and most wise among the ancient games, what are your thoughts on these "old new" rivalries?

Another game not likely to happen. Great trip for the fans. Too great a trip for the athletes. ND almost lost two games there because of distractions. ND cancelled the last series.

I have a vague recollection of Raki Nelson converting a 3rd and a mile in 1997 to lead ND to the game winning score. Such an ugly game.

I would like to see them spread it around the nation with powerhouses and then some weaker opponents per say that could pull an upset or two. Something along these lines then build from...

tennessee
michigan
michigan state
ohio state
florida
texas
Ole Miss
mizzou (my area so bias involved but hate em)
pitt
usc
w. virginia

Call me crazy but its just a dream correct?? Imagine dominating this schedule and one's just like it year in and year out. We would never be doubted to compete! Like I have stated... dream ... but also legit!!

Yeah, I agree. They're headed for the pit. They're not going to be very good for a while.

Ole Miss can suck it. I'd love to see Brian Kelly whip the unrelated Chip Kelly into the ground.

How about they (TENN) is a solid program as far as a name, plays in SEC, and would be entertaining. Not an obsession just a game I would like to watch. A game we could win yet pull an upset against a Florida, BAMA, LSU, ETC that has been mentioned.

I would like to play Army more often. I know it's not a very interesting contest, or a game that would help us in the rankings. But, I've wanted to see a game in Michie Stadium for some time now, and their fan base is a class act. There's also a lot of history in the game, and between the two schools. I was happy to hear that we're playing them this year, and in the new Yankee Stadium is a great place to play it.

Great program.

Geographically one of the most beautiful states I have ever driven through. Well, that's my idea. Maybe I was sleepy.

I think you were sleepy. I live here and there is nothing great about TN. The only thing fun is riding The Dragon with friends on my CBR or making a road trip with bunch of other S2K owners..

iDshans, being the oracle, and most wise among the ancient games, what are your thoughts on these "old new" rivalries?

You're barking up the wrong old dog's tree in search of a new trick. I'm not the student of the game that BGIF and Old Man Mike are. As a grade school and high school student my loyalties were pretty parochial. I was a Gator Gomer. I was pissed at ND for beating up on the Hurricanes back in the late sixties. My older brother's best friend in high school (now my brother-in-law since he married my older sister) attended Miami his freshman year and Florida thereafter. ND wasn't a blip on my college radar, football or otherwise, until I was accepted there while rejected by my top three choices. No regrets.

One of my favorite college football games was a Dartmouth – Penn game in Philadelphia around '72 over a Thanksgiving weekend. I went to the game with my brother and some of his Dartmouth classmates, followed by dinner at the home of a Penn grad. Much alcohol was involved. Good thing. It was Boy Scout Day ... and the boys were there in force with a version of those vulvalooza thingies, tooting up a storm continuously. More reason to drink and hoot and holler.

The atmosphere was raucous and electric (eclectic?), but not in a do-or-die, kick-ass-or-life-is-meaningless vein. It was a "crucial" game, but more importantly it was party time, regardless of the outcome. Ivy League football hasn't been relevant in a century. We're still in the mix.

Fun game, good food, good drink and great company. What more could an on-the-road college sophomore ask for?

I lived in Miami for just a year two or three years after graduating. It was a year that Oklahoma met Arkansas in the Orange Bowl. I came to hate plastic pig heads and ANYTHING red. Speaking of red ...

I wouldn't mind taking on Alabama as a periodic "rival." Or FSU so I could collect on more bets made with high school classmates. Same with Florida. Assuming, of course, that we have the wherewithal to stomp them as expected or upset them in spite of expectation.

Don't remember which highway I drove through, but drove 4 or 5 times round trip. Was it 40? Either way, you guys have a very scenic state. At least parts of it. I guess you would know better.

As to Tennessee, we hillbillies need to stick together. Scenic indeed is WVA and scenic indeed is Tennessee. Some folks just don't like God's Green Hills but what can you do for them? My recent houseguest is from Tennessee and he is quite happy with everything there but the economy. As to UT [the "real UT", as he called it], he said he was a Titans fan, even though he liked Rockytop. As to playing UT [which is theoretically what this thread is all about], I'd rather play them in South Bend and skip the scenery. UT will return to football prominence and probably soon, as they like it too much in the state not to cheat a little to get there. So I wouldn't assume that a future scheduling would be some non-threat. --- as to "ancient rivalries", we've already got the best ancient one, as we are chasing Michigan for the most wins ever [we have to get some losses on Texas too.] The greatest game of the Twenty-First century would be when we beat Michigan to take over #1 on the all-time wins list. The whole football world would be watching that one. {P.S. the last known Elvis sightings were in Kalamazoo Michigan, my other place of residence, so I guess we don't HAVE to go to Nashville even for that}.

Economy? Sir, I live in California. Want to talk economy?

I have driven north/south/east/west to school or job or family across the entire country. Certain trips were "alone" thousand mile drives. My trip through whatever part of Tennessee was mind boggling. Another great drive was from southwest New Mexico up to Flagstaff Arizona. Wow.

Friggen Cali is a dried up desert.

But at least pretty ladies live here.

What were we talking about?

I hear people say it's a beautiful state but I lived here for 20 some odds years so it's like, meh to me. I never been to South Bend and I probably could gush about it to residents who live there and they'd probably say it's an okay place.

Outside the scenery there is really nothing to do. No theme parks, Gatlinburg has a big car show once a year, you have Lookout Mountian in Chattanooga, Memphis is a whole different other culture. I guess when you've been every where in TN it gets old to you, but The Dragon will never get old..

I could use a good change of scenery in my life for a week or so maybe like Utah or Hawaii.. Then come back to TN to really appericate it.
