Tackling Right Tackle

Christian McCullom

8/16

Kelly's pleased, Warinner's pleased and Dever's in the best shape of his life.

“I think that those are pretty good battles,” Kelly said. “Wenger and Cave are pretty good. Dever and Nuss are pretty good. So whoever wins it — we know we’ve got a pretty good starting five.”

...

Offensive line coach Ed Warinner is not concerned about the fact that none of the Irish tackles have any career starts.

“That doesn’t worry as much just because I think what we do on offense is different,” he said. “The talent’s there I think. I think they’ll be fine.”

I hope Cave beats out Wenger. Having an inside of the o-line of Stewert, Cave, and T-Rob would be 3 bulldozers leading a running game.

Is it me or do you feel that Cierre Wood is heading into a breakout season?

The indication I get from Kelly's interviews is that he wants Armando to carry the load, with the other guys in some kind of supporting role.

I think we'll see Armando get, say 50-60% of the carries. Hughes, Wood and Gray will handle the rest.

But I do believe Cierre Wood will be the "keep the defense tired as hell" back, coming when Allen needs a breather and supplying the speed and explosiveness that will keep the defense on their heels.

Why would Kelly do all that when he could keep teams tired by inserting Hughes, have him run right into the back of the nearest guard and fall over...

Perhaps because Hughes doesn't have the "speed and explosiveness" to burn a defense stuffing the box. Hughes can pound it if that's what's wanted but he's not the threat Allen is or Wood is thought to be.

I'd like to see Cave lock down the Center. The coaches know better than me, obviously, but I'm really surprised that Romine hasn't panned out so far. I keep expecting to hear about him locking down the starting role, but he never does. I trust Kelly to get the best guys on the field.

Kelly is a little more creative in his playcalling. I don't think we'll see a lot of the "sucking on an epic scale in terms of creativity" section of the playbook this year.

Romine is a tackle.

But I would also like to see Cave at center, for the same reasons I want to see Martin starting at left tackle over Romine. They have more eligibility and provide more stability and experience for future lines, particularly in 2011, my first expected BCS year.

Was this serious or sarcasm? I took it as sarcastic but you got two serious responses...
