#17 ND '93

The Fighting Irish are either The Team That America Loves or The Team That America Hates. A fan base -- "The Subway Alumni" -- built in the first half of the 20th century worships from afar and, along with actual alums, embraces Notre Dame football for its perceived connection to good grades, hard work and the Almighty. The haters despise Golden Domers for all the same reasons, which they regard as holier-than-thou arrogance. The fall of 1993 was the last high point of the Lou Holtz era in South Bend. The Fighting Irish took down mighty Florida State in that year's Game of the Century (which landed defensive end Jim Flanigan on the SI cover), but one week later suffered a shocking home loss to Boston College, when former prep school soccer player David Gordon knuckleballed a game-winning field goal into the darkness enshrouding Touchdown Jesus. Half a continent away, in a press box in Morgantown, W. Va., jaded sportswriters covering another game stood and spontaneously cheered. The BC loss helped hand the national title back to FSU (and led to the formation of the BCS). Notre Dame still hasn't won one since. -- Tim Layden

I'm shocked the Knicks of 1993-94 came in 7th!? I think more people hated the Bulls than the Knicks during that era, and I don't even like the Knicks.

BINGO on the 1, 3, and 11 picks though. Especially '86 Miami, but any Miami team from the 80s and 90s, as well as any Jimmy Johnson coached team. I never hated any teams before or since those Miami teams, and I am not excited about renewing the rivalry.

I would move up Russia from 14 to number 2. I have seen video and read much about that game. The most horrendous and blatant cheating of an international game in the history of sport. (Although I'm not quite sure it was the actual Russian team as it was the conspirators and officials who stole the game...)

i really don't know how the '93 Irish made it on the list, and then when they explained it, nothing in the whole paragraph mentioned really anything bad. every other team had like harsh things said about it, which they all earned.

but i guess ND had to make it on that list some how or another, just maybe the wrong year or something

Maybe the team that had only 6 wins and got whupped in the Fiesta Bowl should be though.

we upset FSU that year, and almost derailed Bobby Bowden's pre appointed 1st National Title, I was so tired of hearing people talk about how he deserved it etc. I think it was Total BS, We beat a Very Good TAMU team in the Cotton Bowl, and FSU limps by I think it was nebraska in the bowl game and they give FSU the title even though we finished with identical records and beat them head up? Bull Shyte

From Mr Rudinger's quote to my fathers buddies who intro'd me to Notre Dame football to women I have taken to games that fell in love with Notre Dame (and didnt even like football) Notre Dame stands alone. The picture of Ara on 'Time' is an all time classic.

Yeah that still burns me up to this day an in '89 the opposite happened an they gave Miami the title when we both finished with the same record an they had a loss to a weaker team plus we knocked off #1 Colorado 21-6 in the Orange Bowl. Go figure?

Yeah, I don't get why they would pick the '93 team either? That team wasn't hyped pre-season and just built momentum up to game that people thought FSU would steam roll through. Since when is an underdog hated? I guess ND had to make the list.

I would have thought the '66 Irish would have been a more likely candidate. With all the crying about Ara playing to tie instead of win against MSU in the other "game of the century", I would think that would land them ahead of the '93 team. But I guess the truth is no one really likes Michigan State, so maybe they didn't ruffle as many feathers

In cfb history (and reality) the most hated team ever would HAVE to be the fatigue wearing 86-87 Convict Miami squad...

In sports?? Almost certainly one of the Yankees Dynasty teams

wait, nevermind, I didn't see that the whole list was out... 86 Miami. No suprise, that was one of the first teams in cfb history to make Grandma watch college football "just to watch those damn thugs lose"

suprising only one Yankees squad made it that high... the 70's Flyers were sure to be there Penner... in reality if hockey had the hold football or baseball does on this country they may have been number one... in fact the only reason I didn't mention that team in the above was because it was hockey.
