Instilling some discipline is considered prison rules?!?!?

this isnt BK being a perfectionist, or micro manager. The way I see it, this is about 2 issues:

1. Team Discipline
2. He is the new boss, and coming in and letting everyone know that its his law, or nothing.

Team discipline is a great thing, but if its done just to prove a point, rather than principle he will eventually lose his players (see Tom Coughlin). If the discipline has a purpose and a need, it will make the team better.

my take is, this has alot to do with #2, more than #1. Team discipline, from what I can tell, has not been an issue at Notre Dame.

other examples of team discipline:
no sitting on your helmet
when your helmet is on, your chin strap is on, always. in practice and games, on sidelines or not.
no walking on the practice field, or game field. you always run/jog
no sitting on the bench during the game
(in high school) if you lose a road game, you wear all your gear on the bus, helmet and all. no talking
No touchdown celebrations (no spiking the ball, just hand the ball to the ref, or just gently drop the ball on the ground)
when speaking to a referee, always address him as Sir.

some of this stuff may sound trivial, but it creates accountability, a team-concept enviornment, and weeds out ppl who dont really want to be there.

Jimmy wouldn't be able to follow that rule.

i wasnt saying these rules are at Notre Dame (not saying they should be either)...those are some of the rules that I have seen with regards to other teams. just examples of team discipline.

Kelly's philosophy seems to be influenced heavily by military standards. You train them so hard that when you go to combat, or in Kelly's case the game, that it is muscle memory. It starts with the little stupid stuff such as the presentation and wear of the military uniform, or the locker room, and it builds into intersecting fields of fire, shooting when being shot at, etc. If you instill this discipline for the small matters it builds into an efficient unit, capable of incredible feats. He broke them down to build them back up in a manner which is conducive to his mission, winning football games. I love it, personally.

BTW any truth to the rumor that Coach Kelly was buried under a mound of twinkies, and Ho-Hos when he had to clean out Weis' old desk? Perhaps this is what planted the seeds in his mind!

Really? I mean come on. He hasn't been the coach for Notre Dame for what 8 or 9 months. Talk about the dicipline if you want, but don't throw in a dumb insult about Weis. Wins and losses wise he didn't cut it, but he did things the right way and didn't do anything to jeopordize the programs future(like Pete the cheat). He left Notre Dame a lot better here then when he got here. Plus his recruiting some very good prospects(which some bitched they couldn't do with Notre Dame standards) is part of the reason Kelly can possibly make some noise this year. Well that's it my rant of the day

Like so many others have already stated this is just an example of getting players to pay attention to detail, and to instill discipline. Like another poster said this is not unlike what is done in boot-camp in the military. I have no problem with Coach Kelly beginning his tenure in this way. BTW any truth to the rumor that Coach Kelly was buried under a mound of twinkies, and Ho-Hos when he had to clean out Weis' old desk? Perhaps this is what planted the seeds in his mind!

IrishGiant, I know you're new here, but the reason you're getting some venom right now from KPenn, and why I was about to write the same thing, is the feeling for most on this board regarding CW fat jokes is that enough is enough. Yes, he didn't succeed here, and deserved to be fired. We get that. But do we have to resort to acting like trolls and continue to bag on the guy's weight? He's gone...we should be better than that. (Hell, while CW was here I never thought we should rip his weight, but I digress.) Let the trolls do that shit.

CW, for better or worse, NEVER stopped trying to turn this thing around, unlike Tyrone Golfingham. I respect that. He worked countless hours, and represented the university well. He also disproved the theory that you couldn't recruit to ND anymore, and he left the program in a better state than when he found it. And he's an alum who 'got' ND.

So for those reasons, many people would just rather let it go and move on rather than throw immature insults at the guy.

If I offended anyone with my earlier post I apologize. It was not intended to be a rip on Weis, and his health issues, merely an ill guided attempt to inject humor to the thread. No the mods didn't tell me to issue a public apology, I did this of my own accord. I know I am a new poster here, and AM NOT attempting to be a troll. I am a huge Notre Dame fan, and I guess my sense of humor may have offended some, if so again I apologize. I will not disparage Charlie's health issues again.

Good stuff. It also greatly cuts down on the prima donna mentality, which in my mind is the start of cancer to a team.

Absolutely, and that is another major reason it is comparable to military training and lifestyle. The mission is paramount, just look at the Army's Soldier's Creed, in which lies the Warrior Ethos; I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, I will never leave a fallen comrade. Now the Creed is a bit longer but in the Warrior Ethos you can see that the mission takes priority over every individual, and this is ingrained in you throughout your time in the military. You are not an individual, you are a member of a team, and that team needs everyone to be on the same page, so you don't get fucking killed. The most important thing. however, is the accomplishment of the mission regardless of the consequences. Now I didn't and won't buy into that completely, you'll never see me lead my men to certain death, but it gets everyone working towards the same goal, which is positive. Again, breaks you down to build you back up in the mold they desire, a team player. So Kelly just seems to be taking this and applying it to football. I suppose all of the old, great coaches had this philosophy, but it has died out recently with our society so obsessed with instant gratification and me, me, me. Now we'll just have to see if it works with all of these five star prima donnas. I like the way it is looking so far. With that I'll conclude my wall of text.
