Is no one else excited about this? It's a pretty big-time get, guys! I would guess he will play OLB for us. I think Diaco may have told him he could play a Darius Fleming type role for us!

HELL YES. That's awesome. Bear/Clay - you made my day.

ESPN 4 Star DE/OLB. This is a big get for our defense. Maybe this will create some momentum

Clay Burton might have taken some extra time to get an unofficial visit to Notre Dame done but it clearly was the right timing. The defensive end/outside linebacker from Venice, Fla., committed to the Irish on Friday, not even a week after finishing his trip to the South Bend, Ind., campus. Burton is the 10th commitment head coach Brian Kelly has landed this cycle.

Hell yeah! ND needs to keep picking up athletes that can put pressure on the QB and Burton looks like he'll be a perfect fit in the 3-4 OLB role.

Great news to start the weekend.

Congrats Clay, Go Irish!

IrishIllustrated.com - Burton joins Irish family

"I definitely never thought I'd be making this decision so early," Burton said. "Just after the visit with the coaching staff and the tradition and the education and football mixed together it just made my mind up easy for me. I'm just happy to make this decision."

With Burton's recruitment over -- he doesn't plan to take any visits and said he didn't foresee a scenario where he would waiver -- he plans to hit the recruiting trail for the good of his future program.

First order of business is putting in a call to a four-star defensive end from nearby Cape Coral, Fla.

"Definitely one of my good friends Aaron Lynch," Burton said. "He's definitely a big prospect for them. I'll get on the phone with him and start talking to him a little bit. No pressure on him or anything, just talking as friends and fellow recruits

Awesome that he and Aaron are friends! I wonder if that was another reason we decided to pursue him so heavily. He definitely earned the spot on his own, though too, so I didn't mean that as a knock. I'm so excited about this kid! If you read ISD's article, it sounds like he already plans on enrolling early!

ESPN's eval of him:

"Burton is a defensive end that displays the ability to cause some problems coming off the edge. Neither his height nor weight is eye-popping, but he comes across on film as a fairly well put together kid with good overall size for the position, and the frame to still add some more good size.

"The thing that grabs your attention with this kid is his pass-rushing ability. He has good first-step quickness and can get to the quarterback with a speed rush. If an offensive tackle makes a mistake and opens up too quickly, Burton can beat him to the corner, take a tight path, turn, and get to the quarterback. He will flash the ability to use his hands to punch and work by, but needs to be much more active with his weapons.

"He will struggle to beat tackles who use good technique with speed alone, and he needs to expand his pass-rush arsenal. He can get caught head-up, and while he will get his hands up, if he can't to get to the quarterback, he needs to have a plan and use his hands for when he cannot just quickly run by. Will display the ability to turn into the blocker and bull rush. He has good speed and closes on the quarterback well.

"He displays a good motor. While he seems best as a pass rusher, he is solid versus the run. Needs to watch with his pad level and also more consistently deliver a forceful punch with his hands, but displays the ability to take on a block and create some separation and stay in a "football" position and hold his ground. He is a solid wrap-up tackler.

"Burton is a productive player who can make you pay if you make a mistake."

He will play the CAT LB spot for us (Darius Fleming's position). Honestly, don't stone me for saying this, but I think he reminds me a lot of another Clay. Clay Matthews from USC. I'm a huge Packers fan, and Matthews has become such a fan favorite due to his speed rushing ability, and seemingly non-stop motor. If you watch his film, Mr. Burton has those same type of qualities for sure. I think anyone can agree that if he turned out like Clay Matthews, we would all be very, very happy.

Don't wanna put pressure on a kid early, but I like what I see!

Tony ALford is the ND coach that primarily responsible for recruiting Clay Burton, Leppy's post was germaine to this thread, Clay Burton's Recruit Profile. The rest of the crap that followed that post wasn't germaine to this thread.

The "recruiter/coach" urinating contest has been moved to a new thread in the Notre Dame Football Recruiting Forum, Recruiter or Coach?

This thread is a RECRUIT's PROFILE the focus is on him, not whatever ticks you off. If you want to argue recruiters and coaches take it elsewhere on this board, like to the LINK above. IF you need to start a new topic, do so in the appropriate forum, NOT this one.

We've been down this road before. Those that didn't heed the warning before were given a leave of absence to reinforce the point. Those that persisted don't post here anymore.

I look forward to Clay's career at ND.

GO IRISH!

Port Charlotte Latest Sports News

From his hometown newspaper.

Making the decision before the start of his senior year was important to Burton.

“It was huge,” said Burton about making the decision now. “It’s the middle of the summer. Perfect time. If I favored them over the summer then why not take advantage of it and show my loyalty to them. I think it’s the best spot for me and I’m happy to get it done,” said Burton.

“He could have waited,” said Peacock. “In my opinion, he could be one of the best defensive ends in the country by the end of the year. But the recruiting process is stressful on these kids. It wears on you and now you can relax and enjoy the process of the senior year.”

Burton’s brother, Trey, committed to the Gators after his sophomore season.

Burton liked the coaches and he said he trusts them.

“They made a big impact on me and I was happy,” said Burton.

According to Burton, they plan on moving him to a 3-4 outside linebacker.

“It’s a little change of pace,” said Burton about the position move. “I’m ready to tackle it and know I can do it.”

After looking at the other colleges, Burton said he didn’t want to visit Notre Dame before he made his decision.

Asked what he comes to mind about Notre Dame and Burton couldn’t stop talking.

“Prestige, the Four Horsemen, 11 national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners, Walk of Fame, Touchdown Jesus,” Burton said. “The stadium is so unique and kind of old school.”
