I have some really amazing friends. Two friends of mine (she is an SC grad and he is a Colorado grad) brought a gift to me this evening. I opened it and found a picture frame and inside the frame is a piece of paper (the back of a restaurant menu) and it was signed: "To Jason - Go Irish" and was signed by Brian Kelly!

One of the coolest presents I have ever received. I was feeling kind of blah towards Irish football recently since the end of the season and the coaching change and all, but something so simple as that autograph really got me pumped up again. I haven't talked to my friends yet, but I am eagerly waiting to hear the story of how the went about getting him to sign it. I can't wait to hear if he is really personable or what.

I was just really touched by my friends thinking about me like that when neither of them have any attachments to ND. Very cool!!! Now, do I put the frame in my house or do I put it on my desk at work? Decisions, decisions...

Thread topic: What is the coolest or most unique Notre Dame gift you have received???

Dude, you're going to LOVE this hire, and you're going to able to wear your ND gear proudly around the OC and the Coliseum like haven't in a lonnnng time. I've been reading stories about so many people who know football saying that ND got a gem of a coach. High school coaches, college coaches, scouts, you name it. He's a true college coach in every sense of the word. Even my SC friends don't talk sh!t about this hire, and they used to hammer me all the time about CW. They're even pissed/scared that ND finally got a great COLLEGE coach.

I'm telling you dude, Friday night before the first game next year, you and I are going to chat while having some beers like we did a couple years ago in anticipation of the change of ND football. I loved CW, and I gave him chance after chance and I was wrong (still love the guy though)...but I have zero doubt that Kelly is the man to being ND back.

As for my greatest ND gift ever given to me, well, that one's easy bro...my wife of course... (and it has nothing to do with her dad having season tix!!!). Also, we have a sweet ND football photo above our sink in the kitchen, that has the team in a huddle with their hands pointed together to the sky that simply states "Tradition". It's not even funny how sweet this photo is, and we had 6 of them framed for all my ND buddies one Christmas...

I really trust what you have to say about it. It has been so hard for so many years to be an ND fan. I remember when Ty went 8-0 to start the season and everyone thought that was the start of the "Return to Glory" and then the hopes were so high for CW. I too was a big CW fan, but I just felt like we have gotten kicked in the nads about a million times in a row the last 10 years or so.

I guess I was more fired up by how lucky and blessed I am by such amazing friends. I am not an autograph hound, but this was such a cool gesture by really great people. Maybe it is a good omen of amazing things to come with Coach Kelly.

I will tell you one thing, my friend, I am putting in on my calendar - Sept 3rd Beers online with NDinL.A.!!! It is ON!!!! Can't wait.

Very cool answer with your wife! That should score you some bonus points later. :gbanana:

My favorite gift would probably be a football I received this Christmas that was autographed by this whole team. Although we all know this years team didn't perform to the level they were expected to, the ball is signed by many talented football players.

Go Irish. You have some great friends. Be thankful. I live in the heart of s.e.c. country and all of my buds are always bashing me because I am an ND fan. I have 2 exwives and no family, so I only have one gift (it was from a buddy that used to work as an equipment manager at the Kelly Blue Gray game. There was an ND player at that game and he traded a practice ball for an ND tee shirt for me. I have never worn it. I had it framed in glass. Unfortunately, exwife number 2 burned it (along with everything else I owned) 10 years ago. I have never been to a game in person, but one day before I die, I WILL!! That's my bucket list, top to bottom!

You are right NDinLA. We better sign Kelly to a 10 year extension right now!

But that is cool about the autograph your friends got you GO IRISH!!! It was very classy of Kelly to sign that for them, especially in a restaurant. And even more classy for your friends to get it for you!

Yeah dude, we sort of get it by now...you hated the Kelly hire. You've said it a ton of times in a bunch of different threads. You also hated Jimmy Clausen. Of course, you're the same guy who said the Pac 10 was better than the SEC this year (I'm a west coast homer and an SEC hater, but dude, buy a clue), so sorry if I don't put much stock in what you say. I think I'll go by what scout, coaches, and people around the program think over a guy who is so opposed to the Kelly hire that he's unwilling to even think that it could have been a good hire.

I'd love to hear who you think ND should have hired. Should be good...

Okay, so I finally talked to my friends tonight. To paraphrase: they were at El Cholo - a great Mexican restaurant in Pasadena and four guys wearing ND jackets came in and sat down at a table right across from them. My friend Rob told his wife they must be in town recruiting. They said that I would just go crazy, but the story about seeing them wouldn't be enough, so Michelle got up and went over to them. She apologized for interrupting, but said they had a friend that was a HUGE Irish fan and would Coach Kelly mind giving an autograph. Coach Kelly smiled and said, "Sure. What's his name?" They said he was incredibly nice and very accomodating.

Very cool. Can't believe they would do that for me and think of me like that.

I like hearing about other people's ND gifts.

BIGEDEFENSE - sorry to hear about your story. You will get to a game someday and it will be one of the most amazing memories of your life.

I think that is great that your friend’s thought of you like that. The only thing I usually ever ask for since I was a kid during birthdays and Christmas is Notre Dame merchandize & memorabilia. So my friends biggest difficulty isn’t wondering what to get me, its wondering if I already own it-lol I have a room in my house dedicated just for watching Notre Dame Football and it is FILLED from years of collecting.

If I had to pick just one it would be the gold Notre Dame watch my wife gave me on Christmas eve 2008 (Hawaiian Bowl) I was really nervous before that game ,but as the game went on I was running around my house practically doing back flips I was so excited by what I was seeing. I was beyond elated thinking FINALLY this team filled with talent has put it together!! My wife sat me down after the game and said that she was going to wait until Christmas but because I was so happy she said she could'nt see a better time. When I opened it I was totally blown away, such a beautiful watch given at such a perfect time.!!!

And I agree about Kelly, I joined and supported any site, i.e. facebook, myspace that campaigned for the hire of Kelly. Besides all the numerous reasons as to why he is such a good coach, there is something ya can’t explain about him. Something that just says “he is the right guy for the right job”~GO IRISH!!

The coolest Notre Dame "gift" I ever received was walking the campus as a kid and running into Monk Malloy, who was just sitting on a bench on the campus. We were moving my sister into St. Mary's that weekend and I had convinced my folks to take me to ND's campus to walk around.

Monk shook my hand and, noticing that I was decked out in ND gear, told me he couldn't wait until I was suiting up for the Irish.

It's sometimes the little stuff that sticks with someone. Monk probably did that for a million little kids during his time there, but that was always special to me.

Met Jim Crowley

Met Jim Crowley

When I was about 11 or 12, it was around 1976 or so, my aunt who was a ND alum and former Nun took me and my brother to a Notre Dame Alumni Dinner in New Hampshire and we got to meet Jim Crowley, one of the Four Horseman. He was in his late 70s then but knowing who he was, to me he was a Giant. We got to meet and greet with him and I shook his hand.

He gave a nice speech and was a very nice man, but I couldn't help thinking over and over that I had shook hands with one of the Four Horseman!

A great gift and a great memory for me.

I just got an autographed baseball from Jeff Samardzija. When I was in college, our G.A. trainer and I were pretty good buddies and he now is a trainer in the Colorado Rockies org. He saw Jeff in spring training and got him to sign a baseball for me. He said he told Jeff about how I went on and on about NOTRE DAME football in the heart of crimson tide country and how I told them about the time I got into a bar fight because I said that bear bryant couldnt wash Coach Rockne's jock strap. I know that this is irrevellant to most, but it is VERY big to me. I am SO proud of my autographed baseball.

As my name implies my brother went to Notre Dame. He was there during the Ara Parseghian era. He new I liked Parseghian so he gave me a football program autographed by the coach. I showed it to all my friends, took it to school, and lost it.

My Assistant Superintendant went to the game Saturday (his son is the third QB, Rob Henry). Anyway, he just came into my classroom and brought me a bunch of things from the game. He had a ticket for the game that was unused and I said this would have been great to have a few days ago. I am going to have it framed because it has the 125 year aniversary logo on it. Nothing really of value, just a bunch of little things that have ND on it. Just thought it was pretty cool of my boss to do that for me.
