Jimmy should have stayed at ND?

Well, let's put it this way.

In retrospect, if Jimmy and Golden knew they were going to be middle/late 2nd round picks, would they have left? Probably not. The new CBA is going to have very little effect on their salaries from that position and if they repeated their statistical output of this year and won a few more games they both could have potentially went higher. That being said, it is real tough to say they made a bad decision based on the information they had available to them. Sometimes life doesn't work out perfectly. Personally, I wish the bears had had a pick... JC or Golden would have been much needed additions. But, again, sometimes you get stuck with Jay Cutler instead... o well.

Also, by the time their 3 careers are over Sam Bradford at one and Tim Tebow wherever he went versus JC at 48 could make Jordan dropping to 3rd look absolutely mundane in comparison.

Finally, Sam Bradford looks like he's better suited to a frathouse or a library than the football field.

Tony Pike was a great college QB; his skills do not transfer to the pros at all.
On the other hand, he is a winner.

First let's consider the first round passes on Jimmy by Pro Teams,
Jet's already have Sanchez
Colts already have Manning
Giants already have Manning
Saints already have Brees
Chargers already have Rivers
Ravens already have Flacco
Falcons already have Ryan
Packers already have Rodgers
Lions already have Stafford
Bengals already have Palmer
Texans have Schaub
Steelers already have Rothlisberger (Maybe)
Titans already have Young
Redskins already had picked up McNabb
Patriots already had Brady
Chiefs already had Cassell
Rams picked up Bradford 1st pick
Bears have Cutler

Whether or not any of these guys stays with their team remains to be seen. You have the obvious ones that will more than likely barring injury start for the next 3-4 years. The others are on teams that think or hope they have a starter. But their time has not played out yet. Anyway my point is that over 1/2 the league has either a bonafide starter, (barring injury) or potential starter.

The other teams like Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, needed a qb but I am glad he did not go to either of those teams. Anyway, it is far too early to judge, I have seen first round busts like Mirer and Leaf and seen steels like Brady and Shannon Sharpe. Where you go in the draft is not at all necessarily indicative of how good or bad you will be in the pros.

Jimmy Clausen

Jimmy Clausen

Sorry to say this but Jimmy Clausen in my humble opinion was not ready for the NFL.
He did not win at ND and that tome is what it is all about.
He even said back when he first commited that he was looking forward to beating U$C 4 times in a row and winning 4 National Championships.
Well what happened no wins against U$C and well we all know what happened with the National Championships.
In most of the games i watched Jimmy did average at best in the final minutes.
Tha game against U$C he should have won that game it should not have come down to what it did (Kamara slipping).
A freshman QB beat him now you tell me is that ready for NFL.
Inmy opinion No way.
Kelly would have helped him for one year to become much more prepared as a winner .
The stats are fine but if you do not win (aka Dan Marino) in my opinion it tarnishes all your stats.
Jimmy should not have listened to C.W. because C.W. proved himself by the play of N.D for 5 years that he does not know how to coach college kids.
In my tru opinion Golden Tate was far more ready for NFL and he will prove it this year with the Seahawks .
Go Notre Dame and Brian Kelly .

These are the 2 single dumbest comments ever made on the board, congratulations.

Jimmy lead us to how many comebacks while at Notre Dame

and

A freshman didn't beat Jimmy, a freshman beat our defense.

Jimmy and Golden left on the professional advice of Charlie Weiss and that is on the record. They benefit far more this year than they will from the new CBA that is being negotiated to limit rookie salaries.

Uh to chyrspchuck try this one if my commens are so stupid.
Who was it that Jimmy led us to comeback wins try Purdue , Washington, Michigan State.
How stupid is this that we should NEVER had to comeback against such mediocre crap.
Even U$C they were not on our level oh thats right we lost to them.
Yes our defense was not as good but still the fact remains that the Great quarterbacks win games(aka Joe Montana).
Jimmy lost a few games this year too (Try Navy) now you gonna tell me that he is NFL ready well i will only say this.
In 3-5 years lets see where he winds up.

Again blame the defense and not one James Clausen.....you proved my point.

If you look at Jimmy's career statistics at Notre Dame he will go down as one of our most prolific passers (even though he spent his entire Freshman year on his back), if he stayed an extra year he would have surpassed Brady Quinn in every category, to say he is not a great Quarterback is remiss.

It's also hilarious that you use Navy as a game Jimmy lost for us, this proves your ignorance. Robby Parris fumble, Micheal Floyd bounced ball off his back, Kyle Rudolph injured in the 3rd quarter, Jimmy took one of the nastiest hits by a QB this year in FBS, gives up 2 sacks because of his line, we recover an onside kick and Jimmy leads us down the field to score again and we don't recover the onside kick with :23 seconds to go as time runs out and your going to use that as a game Jimmy Lost US, your a troll get out of here.

Top 5 in completions in FBS, 28 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in 425 attempts is a great season by a QB, Notre Dame or not.

If the defense was at least funtional the record would have been better last year. Hard to argue with 28 TDs vs 4 INTs. Jimmy is going to be just fine. Staying at ND this year would have killed him.

jimmy was nfl ready and is very talented learning a whole new system would have not helped him at all. Golden probably could have stayed another year yet he probably would not have done any better. He got drafted probably as high as he could have. Good luck to both of them but i am ticked at Pete Carrol for drafting Golden

When are some of you guys going to get it that it's a team game??? Tons of bad NFL QBs won championships in college, and there are plenty of good QBs who didn't come from great programs as well. Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson, Gino Torretta and Ken Dorsey won anything and everything in college...so that made them slam dunks to be great in the pros? WTF?

What if Clausen had played for SC and Barkley had played for ND? Do you honestly think that ND would have beaten SC this year? Really? If you believe that, then you're a joke and you know it. And if you don't believe that, then your argument holds absolutely no water. And you can use that exact same argument with the Pitt QB and many others as well. (Can you guys imagine what Jimmy would have done against ND's secondary last year??? Holy cow, what a joke that would be.)

You put Jimmy on Alabama's team and he wins a sh!tload of games...would you not agree? Just read your paragraph again, and ask yourself...if Jimmy Clausen had a chance to play with the defenses of Bama, Florida, TX, Nebraska, etc, would he not have won a ton of games?

Just think about that...

You are right about one thing: USC was not on ND's level. They were about 5 rungs higher than ND.

Oh wait!! You meant that ND was on a higher level than USC, and that means that Jimmy "losing to them" is somehow proof of how unready he is, for the NFL? Seriously, dude..............get a grip!

Two things I am not quite sure of is this "Ready for The NFL" and "He didn't win in college." I have seen many people say "well he didn't win in college and that is what he should be measured by" or words to that effect. Does this only apply to qb's? Or am I to understand, that anyone who played on a team with a losing record in college should forego the NFL draft because ultimately they are not that good of a player? There are also many players that were picked in the top ten that were busts. There have been many late round selections that were steals. Think about that for a moment, in order for that to happen, professional football trainers, coaches, management would have to examine, scrutinize and critique the players. People that are supposed to know more about football than any of us. But they got it wrong in these instances. I don't know whether Clausen or Tate, or Bradford or McCoy for that matter are ready for the NFL. Who does? They may all be pro bowlers, they may all be journeyman players. Time will tell.

I also see comparisons to Brady Quinn. Is Quinn a bust? Still to soon to tell. Admitedly, I like Quinn, but understand, his rookie year Anderson had a Pro Bowl year, if I were head coach I would have started Anderson ahead of Quinn in Quinn's second year as well. How do you sit a guy that throws for 3,787 yards and 29 TD's the year after he does it? Granted then Anderson's play dropped off. But, I also watched a couple of Browns games and the Offensive line absolutely sucked. As I watched it reminded me of Archie Manning, Steve Young while at Tampa Bay, Doug Williams while at Tampa Bay, or Terry Bradshaw. None of these guys appeared that good either. But three of them have Super Bowl Rings. Whether he too turns out to be like one of these guys or like Heath Shuler, Andre Ware, or Ryan Leaf rmain to be seen.

Yea running that spread offense after running a pro style for 3 years would have done wonders for JC at the next level. Some people are just blind. They dont like JC and will say anything to knock him.

And I am so sick about hearing how he said he was looking forward to beating USC and winning national championships. WHAT DO YOU WANT HIM TO SAY? GEE GUYS, I REALLY HOPE WE CAN BEAT USC. GET A GRIP PEOPLE.

I'm not sure how you would start someone over a guy who put up those stats the year before but I think you can ask the Denver Broncos about that who had Kyle Orton throw for 3,802 yards and 21 TDs while missing a couple of games due to injury. All they did is go get Brady and then drafted Tebow in the first round. They say they are going to work him in with the wildcat at the minimum too . . . I cannot understand it.

Truthfully, I could see them drafting Tebow or any team with a established qb drafting Tebow. Most teams, take the following for example, Colts, Saints, Chargers, Patriots, can't sign a first round qb with the money they pay their franchise qb, to have that 1st rounder sit for 3-4 years isn't going to happen. First of all if he is a first rounder he wants to play, seondly, about the time the drafting team is ready for him, he has already signed with another team. Most teams with an established qb may take a potential backup in the later rounds, then if he developes in 3-4 years great if not, they release him. That is how Brady ended up on the Patriots.

Also about the USC Comment and National Championship Comment. So, at 18 the kid was cocky. I have 9 boys, over the age of 18. They have all said silly things and made predictions at the age of 18, about where they would be when they were 22. All have been wrong to a certain degree, a couple have been way off the mark. My point is, how long does it take to be forgiven about the typical brashness of an 18 year old kid? Most pro coaches talk about getting into the playoffs and going to the Super Bowl, some of these coaches were way off base as well, but all were older than Jimmy and should have been much wiser as well. Do you judge them as harshly? Is what he said any different than what he would say at a Pep Rally? Lot's of players at Pep Rallys make predictions on the upcoming game. To the effect of "Tomorrow, will going to kick the other teams ass!" Even if that other team is UF, OSU, USC, Bama, Texas, or whoever and even if the player is a Senior playing for Slippery Rock University.

I also see comparisons to Brady Quinn.

I dont understand the comparisons between Quinn and Clausen in terms of the NFL. Quinn was coached by Weis, but he was not a 'Weis guy'. Clausen was hand picked by Weis as 'his guy', was coached from day one to do just what he did while at ND. Picked and groomed to run a pro-style offense...Quinn was a Ty guy, not hand picked to run a pro-style offense, but developed into running a version of a pro-style offense....totally different from Clausen who has spent the last 10-12 years of his life preparing for the NFL. I mean, had Quinn been preparing himself for the NFL before Weis got to ND? Clausen has been preparing for the NFL since before he got to ND.

I dunno, just because Quinn hasnt been that great yet, has no bearing on how Clausen will turn out.

When Ty was hired, all we heard about was his high powered, West Coast, pro-style offense. The complaint is that he was trying to run it with an option guy in Carlyle Holliday and other Bob Davie guys.

I do not envy you. I'm sure they brought you a lot of joy but 9 kids is a ton.

I have a correction, 7 boys over 18, 2 boys (twins) that will be 17 in four months. (I meant to say 9 boys 7 over 18) And one daughter 20. If you notice I was trying for a football team, I ended up a player short but gained a cheerleader :) Yes, they are a joy but they do help me keep the makers of tylenol in business.

I also agree TDHeysus, look at Lienert and Palmer for instance. There are so many variables involved, there is just no way to make a determination based on the record of the team, the system they were in, or the coach, You cannot even tell year to year how a pro qb is going to be based on the previous pro year/years. There are absolutely no guarantees of ones performance in the pro's, only subjective indicators.

Jimmy went to a great situation. He doesn't have to start immediately but has the opportunity to. He ha a good line (which he never had at nd) a good running game and a go to reciever. Th defense need some help as do steve smith but Jimmy should get some good experience this year and with a good draft next year Carolina could be in a great situation in the coming years. They need another reciever to compliment smith and defensive help.
