I know this is a bit of an older story. It's starts out about FSU and their academic violations they went through a little while back. However then the video clip dips into the issues of FSU academic standards for football players and about getting recruits into FSU that would just astonish you. Trust me... much of this will make your jaw drop!

OTL: Florida State Academic Scandal - ESPN Video - ESPN

And this is FSU.... can you imagine what it's like at other schools... my goodness it's scary to think of what's going on out there.

I know Lou got some questionable guys in (for Notre Dame standards) back in the day using some loop holes. But they were nowhere near what your going to see here. Just unreal.

This is what is wrong with the NCAA, and society. These"student athletes" are given a free ride to play sports. Unfortunately this probably goes on at the other schools as well, look no further then the Baketball grad rates. FSU should have its Football program abolished, along with criminal charges against Bowden and school officials.

Who were the questionable guys that you "know" that Lou got in?

I would assume that he was referring to guys like Tony Rice, and maybe Chris Zorich, who were certainly questionable admissions, at ND. Luckily, Lou had a good head for people, and both of those guys were academic successes, by the time they graduated.

Thought provoking for sure...I too thought this was old, but didn't know these details.

This is criminal...FSU admitted a kid with a 60 IQ, which by a statistical scale used to classify folks, puts this person as mentally retarded. Now I am furious with the NCAA, but just where in the hell did this kid go to school before FSU...heads should be rolling there too...how can kids with second grade reading skills get out of Grammar school, much less High School.

As far as what Lou did...I remain convinced he did so openly, and because he judged these folks to be of high character, and behind academically, but not lost. His choice to back these kids goes as much to missionary principles as it does to winning football games...just so you know I HATED that book "Under the tarnished Dome", and felt it was pompous, and spoke to excellence as if it were an F'd up form of Aristocracy as apposed to a goal with processes which allow, and reward charity in its pursuit. In short, Lou's boys are simply excellent human beings whose time at ND catapulted them forward, and whose presence enhanced the lives of all those who helped them succeed. I'm for standards so long as we do not forget the mission of the university and all its programs....Lou got it better than any since....

Wasnt Peter Boulware a player that Lou really wanted and his admission was denied for academics? Wasnt that the straw that broke the camels back with Lou? I remember Lou saying he could not get the athletes to compete. Randy Moss and Peter Boulware were both steered to FSU by Lou after trouble with their ND admissions. (Moss went FSU and got busted for marijuana, ended up at marshall; peter boulware was drafted into the NFL) I know Moss decided to beat a dude up with a phone receiver, and that really got him denied to ND, but his academics wasnt exactly 'lighting it up' either.

IrishCanuck are you alluding to prop 48? BGIF should be able to give us the run down on that...

That FSU story is awful. but does it really surprise you? "Institutions" like FSU are football factories. Judging by the football teams Miami has ran out on the field, would you guess that it is an academically competitive, private university. That also has a strong law school.

Man, you always have the historical data...My brain is getting too old to recall this stuff...

Boulware...wouldn't be the first academic denial I'm sure. Further, I'd guess since ND is a Private Catholic Institution, they have time, and the desire to look at many factors that aggravate or mitigate academic performance...If you had a high IQ, got good gades but came from a crappy school district, and didn't do well on SATs, I bet the other stuff mitigates the SATs...If you built homes for the homeless, worked in a soup kitchen, and served in church, had great SATs, but blew off homework, and had less than stellar grades...I'm guessing the charity work and other stuff would mitigate the grades. If you had the minimum IQ, SAT scores, and grades and beat someone with a phone...that might Aggravate any perceived academic weakness (well and might get you punted all by itself). I don't know the timing of Moss beating on someone as relates to Lou forwarding him as a candidate...but truth be told, he's the guy that needed Lou and ND the most. As for pot...Scary...FSU chucked Moss, but we seem to eventually forgive that if you play hoops...:) Joking!

I give Lou Credit for trying...he had alot of success taking some chances on people...and not just football success...Maybe Boulware and Moss would have been just fine...maybe not. Had it been my call, Lou would have had enough rope to hang himslef by that point. and no...not because of football success, but because he really churned out some quality individuals who were apparently lacking something when they came to ND. Until someone actually got in trouble, or he tried to add more than a couple of those guys a year, I figure he earned the right to try. He took responsibility for his guys. He disciplined them (ask Ricky Watters), and he did a dandy job of shaping young men. What evidence do we have he would have failed with Moss and Boulware? Was Lou's graduation rate = to CW's...I doubt it. Was it unnacceptable though? And if so what was/is the performance benchmark for Grad Rate?
