Good for them. Since in all likely hood this will be the first time since UNC isn't in the tourney since 02-03 i'm gonna be pulling even more for the irish this year to make a run.

Are wins over Marquette and one in the BE tournament essential to keeping that #11 seed?

I think a win over Marquette and we are in. A loss there and we would have to win one in the Big East tourney. Depends on what other teams do though as well.

I think these current 'last four in' first four out' change daily as teams win or lose. i think if they lose to marquette then they need probably 2 wins in the tourney. But then it would all depend on what other teams do too. The other Bubble teams could tank it. The committe is so subjective that they will consider the fact the Harangody hasnt played in a few weeks so that helps. So long story short, yes i'd say it is essential and they pretty much control if they get in or not.

I think 2 more wins and we are firmly in. One more win and we have a shot, but it would be a nervous selection sunday. Lose at Marquette and in the first round in NYC and I dont give us much of a shot if any

Here is the way I see it:

If we beat Marquette, we are about 99% in and would earn the 7 seed in the Big East Tournament. At that point our first game would probably just be the difference between earning a 9-10 seed for the NCAAs or an 11-12 one.

If we lose to Marquette, we could fall anywhere between the 7 and the 10 seed in the Big East Tournament. If we earn the 7 or 8 seed, we would still get the bye but would probably have to win to make sure we would get in. If we earn the 9 or 10 seed, we would play either Depaul or Rutgers in the first round which would do little for us before playing either the 7 or 8 seed in the 2nd round. There really is no difference between the 7 through 10 seeds, just that the 9 and 10 can only tire themselves out by having to play in the 1st round against the 15 and 16 seeds.

Pretty much, beat Marquette and we are in barring a 30 point loss in the Big East Tournament. If we lose, we would have to win our game in either the 7 v. 10 or 8 v. 9 Big East Tournament to get in. If we lose to Marquette then lose in one of those games, we probably would only have about a 25% chance of making the tourney.

A win at Marquette would all but guarantee a spot in the field. IF the Irish win Saturday, their seeding could be very fluid depending upon the Big East tournament. A run in New York could mean as high as a 5 seed.

Unless we make a nice run into the Tourney, I really don't think we get a 7 seed. I'm thinking 9 seed... at the MOST.

They still need to beat Marquette.

No, they dont. They need 2 more wins to solidify a bid. Whether that comes on Saturday and the one in the Big East tourney, or 2 next week, doesnt really matter. Unless everyone else is wrong...

Palm has ND as a #10 Seed

Palm has ND as a #10 Seed

Projecting the Field: Little urgency from teams on bubble - NCAA Division I Mens Basketball - CBSSports.com

3/7/10 Projections

ND would be in the South facing #7 Seed Clemson.

Last four in: Georgia Tech, Memphis, Seton Hall, San Diego State
First four out: Arizona State, Illinois, Rhode Island, UAB

Jerry Palm notes:
More teams seem to be trying to play their way out than play their way in. Georgia Tech, Marquette, Connecticut, Cincinnati, UAB, Mississippi State and half the Atlantic 10 all suffered damaging losses Saturday. For UConn and Cincy, those losses might have been fatal.

Bracketology - NCAA College Basketball Brackets and Predictions - ESPN

Lunardi has the Irish in the East as the 9 seed playing Oklahoma State in Milwaukee. What could a couple of wins do in NY? I say if they get to the semi's they could get up to a 6 or 7.

Agree. I think by making the quarters we stay as a 8/9 seed. Beating Pitt and getting to the semis would probably get us to a 7. Another win, depending who it is against, and a 6, and winning it all would get us a 5 or a 4.

It would be tough not to give us a 4 seed if we ever did win it all. We would have won 8 straight at that point, beating Pitt (2 times), Gtown, UCONN, Marquette, Seton Hall, and potentially both Nova and Cuse. Remember, when Syracuse went on their huge run with McNamara they went from being out of the NCAA discussion to a 5 seed.

Well, Lunardi dropped ND from a 9 seed to a 12 seed overnight. I know sometimes he will have a stronger team as a 12 seed instead of an 11 due to matchup problems, but dropping 3 seeds after not playing a game is pretty rough. Maybe we were a 10 seed yesterday and forced into a 9 due to matchups, and now we are a 11 seed being forced down into a 12, but its still annoying. We aren't listed in his Last Four In, so we should be safe barring an ugly loss tomorrow and some weaker bubble teams going on runs.

On other Bracket sites, I have seen ND listed as either a 10 or 11.

Bracketology 101

This is arguably the best known bracket predictor besides Joe Lunardi.

They updated after ND's win over Seton Hall and have ND as a #9 seed. Lunardi's will update tomorrow morning.
