What are your expectations for Dayne Crist?

It's not your imagination, Dayne Crist is a fantastic kid and has already proven to be a great leader off-the-field. Remember, he was the one who helped keep the #1 class in the country together despite coming off a 3-9 season.

People I've talked in SB/ND all rave about this kid. I mean he is truly loved by people and they just sort of gravitate to him. I'm a HUGE Jimmy fan and I think he did a tremendous job of leading this year, but he doesn't have the personality that Crist does. Crist is just a special, special kid that you guys are finally going to get to know and love.

And I speak from experience from his time down here in SoCal as well. His teammates and coaches swear by him. I've talked to a couple of his former teammates (one of them is a bouncer at a bar I just went to Thursday and when he saw my ND hoodie he wondered if I meant the h.s. school or the university and we struck up a conversation...dude is a student at UCLA and is friggen huge), and they LOVE the guy. Even one of the USC recruiting guys recently said that his favorite non-SC recruit of all-time was easily Dayne Crist. He said he's just an incredible young man who was as respectful and humble as can be, despite his enormous talent.

I'm telling you, if he plays good football, you are going to love this kid as much or even more than any talented player you've loved at ND...he's that good of a kid and will be that dynamite of a leader.

(and this is coming from as big of a Clausen apologist as you'll see on this board)...

and I tend to agree with what Todd McShit said today (as much as it pains me to say) on ESPN. Jimmah may have been a fine field general, but he wasn't respected off of it because he was an ass....(not his words but mine filling in where he left off). from all reports, Dayne is well liked and commands respect all in the same breath. I can't wait to watch him finally take the controls and do great things at this University.

I really like Crist, but I will never like a QB more than Clausen until I see a better QB than Clausen which should be a long, long, long time. Clausen just had the most productive season for a pro style QB IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY. I love Clausen because he was a bit of a jackass. His leadership skills seemed fine to me to continue to lead his team on game-winning drives. If Crist can do that, I'll be more than happy.

His running is one of my only concerns with his knee. I know people have came back fine from injuries before, but I hope he doesn't mentally worry about it getting hurt again.

Crist's running/escapibilty is terrific, hopefully everything goes well with his therapy.

That was a GREAT throw. He threw a frozen rope 35 yards threw the air and hit his receiver in stride!!!

nice comments about Mr. Clausen. I agree totally. I dont think he gets the full credit on this board, or nationally for what he did last year. Injuries to him and other key players and he still made it look easy, he made alot of ppl think that Crist can just slide on in and there not be a drop in production. A mark of a great player with skills - he makes it look so easy that you think that you could do that too. But you dont see all the prep work that went into it.

As far as leadership skills with regards to Crist, I havent seen anything yet so its hard to comment. But I'm not giving anything away, Crist will have to show he is a leader. You dont inherit leadership just because your the starting QB, or just because ppl like you, or just because the coaches like you. You dont even inherit leadership if your the best player on the team either. you cant fool the players; the players will naturally gravitate towards the team leader.

Leadership skills show up when there are no coaches or cameras around.

Crist needs to show that he can piss in the tall grass. Like Mr Clausen did after the Syracuse game last year. Look at Mr. Clausen before the syracuse game, and compare him since the syracuse game. Pre-syracuse was Jimmy Clausen, post-syracuse was Mr. Clausen - 2 totally different players on and off the field.

Crist needs to get there.

The huge difference right now is experience. Crist has made one good throw, Clausen had dozens, if not hundreds. I doubt Crist can ever be as accurate as Clausen, but he may surprise, being in Kelly's offense and all.

Well, Crist was never really given the opportunity to consistently air-out the ball down field... That one throw to Goody showed that he has the capabilities to make Clausen-like throws..

So with do time, Crist will become more and more consist and more comfortable airing the ball out. I have a lot of faith in Dayne, and Kelly's spread should give him a great opportunity to be very successful.

I was at the Washington State game in SA with my 7 year old son. We both loved seeing the Irish in person, both for the first time. After seeing the throw Crist made I knew this guy would do some great things. However when I saw him go down later, I thought man our we in trouble for the 2010 season if he doesn't heal. It's good reading the news here that he looks like he is coming along nicely. Both my son and I can't wait until september. Just can't wait!!!

There is only one word that describes what I want Dayne to do for us next year...win. As long as he manages the games well I believe he can get it done. I'm sick of seeing ND under-preform.

I hope you're right, but I highly doubt he will have a 7-1 Td-Int ratio next season, like Clausen's 28-4.

I'm glad to hear that Crist's footwork has improved tremendously since the infamous time Kelly yelled at Crist for having sloppy footwork.

Molnar believes Crist has the footwork and fundamentals down now, so this summer it looks like Crist is ready to learn Kelly's offense.

I so pumped for Dayne's first game.

I'm expecting huge things from him!

I think 30 TD's is almost a given.

Crist has the smarts and strong arm to make tons of plays. He's improved his footwork and his knee should feel fine by Purdue.

The one thing I'd like to see, judging from his BG performance, is getting rid of the ball quicker and not telegraphing his throws to players.

In Kelly's offense, he'll have to take the snap and deliver balls quickly on screens, slants and to streaking receivers. I like his decision making and Kelly's coaching will only make him that much better.

Still, he's bound to have a bad game or two with multiple interceptions. If he keeps his INT under ten he will have a great year, and the team will probably have a great record.

I think we will see a couple other guys play too. It's been Kelly's mantra forever, but he'll lean on Crist a lot. I'd expect Hendrix and someone else to get reps against Army, Western Michigan and maybe against Purdue and Tulsa if the lead gets comfortable.

Ifbhe stays healthy he will have a good year and may be in the talks for the heisman for 2011. I also think other qb's will get some pt. I expect to see Montana get consider pt once we have comfortable leads with another qb getting some experience. The running game should be why really lead us to victory. The running game will keep us on the field longer and wear down defenses but Kelly doesn't care about time of posession so I guess I'm just looking for a team to win games however it takes

I think people need to slow down a little. To a stranger viewing this site, you would think that ND is going to rack up about 2500 yards rushing, and 3000+ yards passing. Each of our receivers is going to have at least 10 touchdowns, each of our running backs is going to have about the same. And all of this under a new coaching staff, bringing in a totally new offense. ND has a ton of talent on offense, but it's probably going to take this team a few games to really get things clicking. And they still have a few very good defenses to face.

With all due respect I want him to do better than a quarterback that has 2 loses to navy on his record. A Notre Dame quarterback should be judged on his win's and loses and not his touchdown ratio.

True to a certain extent, but when an average to above average QB wins more games than a QB with superior stats, that could also be a good indication that the average QB had a better surrounding cast and better coaching or overall scheme.

But personally, I'll judge the coach on wins and losses, and the QB on how he performs, how he leads, and how he performs under pressure.
