Big Ten will amplify the call for a 12th team

According to Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, the Big Ten is going to go after a 12th team again.

Wisconsin Ad Barry Alvarez says Big Ten will amplify call for a 12th team - ESPN

If they do, the name will be even more ridiculous. Change it back to the Western Conference.

I vaguely remember that they will only take a team that shares a border with a current Big Ten state, so that takes teams like UConn or Memphis. If I would make a top 3 it would be Pitt, Rutgers, and Kentucky.

Hopefully they can get a 12th team and have two divisions with a championship game, instead of the current ridiculous system where there is no championship game but not every team in the conference plays each other.

This would be good for college football.

Just so they can act like they win the huge game in the big ten championship.

Everyone thinks Bama is going to roll over Texas just because they beat the second SEC team, Florida. Texas is legit, and I believe will take them. Its just a bullshit move to make them look more like BCS championship relevant teams, even though its bullshit.

Conferences suck. Hook em Horns.

I think if Kentucky can shift from the SEC to be the 12th team, that would allow TCU to move into the SEC. Would be a nice facelift for two programs.

I think the MWC is very close to becoming a major conference in both football and basketball, so I don't think they will break it up yet.

There was talk that the MWC was trying to add Boise St, Fresno St and another WAC team. Would make the big east look pathetic

"We're irrelevant for the last three weeks of the football season because we're not playing," Alvarez said Friday.

Barry, you guys were irrelevant for most of the first 12 weeks of the football season why should the last 3 weeks be any different?

Why wouldn't they try to go after Cincinnati or Central Michigan? Those teams would be a good fit for the Big10.

So are they still gonna call themselves the big ten even though they have 12 teams.

CMU would do nothing but bring down the program. Cincy would be an amazing pickup as well. I think that if they do pick a new team it will be Rutgers or Syracuse though.

I hope they don't waste their time and contact us.

hopefully not. it would take away the ability of ND to schedule a string of games like Western Michigan-Navy-Tulsa-Utah-Army. it is hard to schedule that many wins in a row in a conference (though in the big 10 lately its getting to that point).

I think the time is going to come when ND is forced to join a conference. That time is not now, but it may be closer than we want to believe. This may be something ND might want to consider. Comcast purchasing NBC clouds our future on the network. Without NBC, benefits of being independent become limited to tradition and scheduling. BCS changes are coming. I would wager a playoff is going to happen within the decade. We no longer have a sweet BCS deal. If the Big 10 adds a team and it is not us, our natural fit is no longer an option. Do we really want to be in the Big East? Swarbrick needs to watch this situation closely.

It would be nice to join the big ten and shut all the big ten lovers who hate us up by being successful in the conference. However I think if we join any conference it will be the Big East like in basketball.

I would be up for joining the Big Ten if we could keep our TV deal, but that is unlikely, so it won't happen. My guess is that we will be in a conference by 2020.

Missouri

Kansas

They have a BB program and can compete immediately at a Big Ten level in football.

Yeah, we'd get NW, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois....

Aaaannnddd... WMU, Eastern Michigan, and Deleware State...

Our SOS would drop into 70's from the 20's and we could compete....

I would imagine that it probably has to do with the size of those schools. While it may make sense for football, they will be looking at athletics as a whole. In addition, they will look at other factors like size, academic programs, and even (probably) the amount of research money the school attracts.

PSU SOS is terrible. Being in Philly, I have to constantly hear about how great PSU is every year. My high school could beat almost all of their non conference opponents. When pressed, they claim they're in one of the toughest conferences in the country!

i exepect then, that there will be no more talk about how the first half of ND's 2010 schedule is the tough part when 3 of the first 4 games are against big 10 schools, with only 1 of the 5 best teams (traditionally) in the conference being part of the slate. if they played Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State regularly it would be a different story, but ND never really plays the meat of the big 10.

believe me, i think the big 10 is nowhere near one of the better conferences, but even as it is, you wont get 5 cakewalks in a row with the 5 teams mentioned above on the schedule as they are going to be spread out.

i also agree that the non-conference schedules for most major conference teams are as much of a joke as what ND puts on their schedule.

Big 10 could take a Big East school like Cincinnati or Pittsburgh, and the Big East could replace them with someone like Central Florida.

Play it any way you want... bottom line is the avg SOS of a Big 10 team is 60+ ..... top to bottom.... playing Penn St., OSU, & Iowa... or whoever... ND's is 28.

using the formula that gets used, had nd beaten uconn, navy, and michigan, their sos would have ended up 52. it is tricky when a team underachieves and in doing so makes their sos better than it really was. IA, Penn St, and Ohio st went 10-2 and wisonsin 9-3. when you win 9-10 games you do not help your sos.

at any rate, i was talking about next years schedule, not this years. admittedly, the big ten was garbage this year. they will see better years. i stand by my general thoughts that next years ND schedule is weaker than the norm that they would get in the big 10. the sagarin system that computes sos takes the sos into account for the overall team ranking. this results in OSU #12, IA #19, PSU #20, and WI #36, and this is in a down year for the conference and particularly MI. the big 10 teams kill their sos because of the crap teams they play out of conference, but they still cant schedule strings of 5 sure win games in a row. that was my point.

the big 10 was probably the 6th best conference this year, and ND would likely have still had their 6 losses this year. ND should ge glad they arent in the SEC or Pac 10 (where no one could argue that they could beat any of the first six teams this year).

Well we can only hope that Purdue and UM break .500 next year... thus helping our SOS... as they certainly were a drain this year. Not holding my breath on that one... then again UM scheduled Bowling Green and Massachussets... and we know they won't be scheduling Appalachian St. (sp?).

MSU and MI being better next year would certainly make the schedule tougher, but i never count on Purdue for much more than .500. Unfortunately for myself, i am not optimistic about what i am seeing in ann arbor. maybe dickrod will surprise me.
