I am not asking for Chizik, I am mearly saying that i dont want another high profile assistant. If we want a big time d coordinator witha reputation then Chizik and Walker at least have a year as a HC

Mine is coach Kyle Whitingham of Utah (name eerily too close to Tye Willingham...I know) ...guy is a Defensive monster, has his boys ready to take on a moving train, and convinced they'll win...just ask Bama

He knows Urbie's shit (was his assistant), but he finds ways to win...gets his boys up for big games...sadly he is a mountain west guy, born and raised...not sure he'd recruit with the big dogs on a national level...but man he's fun to watch...and he develops players.

Nickerson is my Out of Left Field guy. He almost beat Walnut Heights using a goal line defense the entire game. He then went on to coach the defensive backfield at Cal Poly. Plus, he can teach typing.

I am also of the opinion, if they have to hire a dark horse out-of-left-field guy, then the search has already failed, given the fact that ND is the only major program conducting an open coaching search this offseason (FSU already has their man on staff) and should have their pick at least of all the guys looking to move from smaller programs to that big job to become rich (i.e. Kelly, Peterson, Patterson, etc).

However, if they do end up hiring a dark horse, how about a black-as-night horse: Major Applewhite. The guy's an assistant head coach at Texas. He's not taking over for Mack Brown when he eventually steps down as Texas has the coach-in-waiting situation with Muschamp. He may have just coached Colt McCoy to a heisman. He had a solid career as a player at a premier program. He can open the pipeline to Texas in recruiting.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want him over any of the big names getting thrown around (Stoops, Kelly, Patterson, etc). But if the question is name a dark-horse, he's certainly that.

Whittingham is a devout mormon, he wont even get an interview.

Hes going to be retiring soon.

But he would have been a great hire 5 years ago, he stacked that South Carolina program with talent that was never there in the school's history. He could've done the same here at Notre Dame and had more success due to the level of competition we play.

Imagine those Stanford defenders trying to stop the Fun & Gun offense.

That's true. I thought he was the offensive coordinator as well which is why I figured he was coaching McCoy, but its Greg Davis. Still, he is the Assistant Head Coach of the Offense. I'd think he's somewhat involved in Colt's development.

Either way, it doesn't really matter, there's not a snowball's chance in hell he'd ever get hired at this stage of his career to be the Irish head coach (nor should he), even if Stoops and Kelly turn them down. I do think he has a promising career though, and if I was AD at a mid-major looking for a new coach, he'd definitely get an interview.

Applewhite turned down the Houston job, which went to Kevin Sumlin.

I think hes the next OC at Texas, the position they gave him to get him from Alabama along with their current OC Greg Davis being 58 makes me believe they expect him to take over solely for the offense when Muschamp takes over as HC in 2012.

Texas is a pretty damn smart program, they have a young defensive assistant in Muschamp and a young offensive assistant in Applewhite and they're grooming each on the staff with the veterans to take over in the future. Applewhite handling the offense, and Muschamp being the HC and handling the defense.

Since we're just throwing out names....

What about Jeff Fisher? As a Colts fan, I've seen a lot of his work. He coaches his guys up, and their team has always had a college atmosphere to it. He knows the area (played on Chicago), is a defensive guy, would probably be a great recruiter, and he's a big enough name that I think you could consider him a home run, if Stoops is really out.

Yeah, I know he's a Trojan. So what?

Thoughts?

I love Jeff Fisher and his intensity. Certainly i would prefer a proven college coach and a big name like Meyer, Stoops, etc, but it's an interesting thought.

Bring back Ty

Bring back Ty

Yep, we should offer him a public apology, a return ticket, and a raise.

A few other things we should do:

1. Reconcile ourselves to the fact that the long-gone glory days ain't coming back.

2. Accept the fact that in today's reality, we can no longer compete with the top State Universities in competing for top talent.

3. Embrace the idea that we are primarily an academic institution, one with a storied football past, to be sure, but one that ought not tarnish that past any more than we already have, the most egregious example being the day we fired Ty, a guy who was the poster boy for what ND values ought to be.

4. Accept the fact that not winning NC's, but having great autumn days on our beautiful campus playing against other student athletes from other lesser programs (already scheduled) is sufficient reward unto itself. Playing competitively against the likes of the service academies is just fine...Florida, Alabama, and Texas we ain't ever gonna be again!

Fisher would be more than a home run imo. Fisher would be a grand slam down 3 in the bottom of the 9th, game 7, with 2 outs on an 0-2 count off of Mariano Rivera in his prime.

Which is why it would never happen. If Jeff Fisher ever leaves Tennessee, he will get another pro head coaching job in about a minute, and it will be at a premier team with a rich owner that will pay him out the ass. And as deep as the coffers are at Notre Dame, I still don't think the University can afford to pay its coach the way a handful of the richest NFL owners at the most premier teams (Jones, Snyder, etc) are capable.

serious.......Corwin's 1st year @ND, had them ranked 42 out of 119 in total defense....The defense was his job at the time.........then came teneuter and crap started to roll down hill.....

I'm not dismissing your point, but you could also turn that around and say, "The blowout losses stopped, as soon as Tenuta took over the playcalling on defense."

here is my choice.

Well, she can definitely work with smart kids. Look what she did with Finch. He became a monster on the line. And she can work with the borderline kids like Bird. And she handled the demotion and transition of Woody Harrelson from QB.

Just heard on the radio Tom Thayer, talking about Clements from Green Bay. He thought he would be a good fit. I like Stoops but I don't see him coming, probably using Notre Dame as a bargaining tool for more power at Oklahoma. Just my opinion

Pretty much.

Fisher isn't getting fired at Tennessee, if anything the GM will be fired, and Bud Adams will give Fisher his opportunity to "shop for the groceries".

Hes also a former condom.

pass on Fischer. career nfl guys making good head coaches at major college programs are still the exception, not the rule.

career .557 record, losing playoff record. the titans owner Bud Adams had to pull fishers head out of kerry coliins' rectum and slap him upside the head to make him see vince young needed to be the starter. 5-0 since. nice coaching Mr Adams.

...hmmm , but we'd have one at linebacker...

Ara Parseghian's not Catholic. Didn't stop them from hiring him. Granted he's not Mormon either, but still.
