Midseason review: Connecticut
October 20, 2009 Posted by ESPN.com's Brian Bennett

Connecticut is 4-2 at the midway point and can only regret the ones that got away.

The Huskies could easily be 6-0 right now
. They led 10-0 in the fourth quarter at home against North Carolina, only to lose 12-10 on a late holding call in their own end zone. They had Pitt down 21-6 on the road late in the third quarter but lost 24-21 on a last-second field goal. The offense has had trouble maintaining its early scoring pace, and the defense has been susceptible to big plays late.

On the plus side, UConn notched a nice road win at Baylor. The running game, despite losing first-round pick and 2008 national rushing leader Donald Brown, hasn't missed much of a beat. The defense has been one of the better ones in the Big East. This is still a team to be reckoned with in the second half.

Unfortunately, the biggest story around the program at the midseason point was the stabbing death of starting cornerback Jasper Howard over the weekend. There's no way to predict how that tragedy will affect the way the team performs the rest of the season.

Offensive MVP: Andre Dixon. A year after he lingered on the bench and in coach Randy Edsall's doghouse, Dixon has rebounded to rush for 616 yards and seven touchdowns in the first six games. He forms a powerful one-two punch with Jordan Todman, who's amassed 502 rushing yards.

Defensive MVP: Lawrence Wilson. Lindsey Witten is among the nation's leaders in sacks, but Wilson has been more consistent. He leads the Big East in tackles, has three sacks and six tackles for loss. Wilson's work at linebacker has been much needed with Scott Lutrus sidelined most of the year with injuries.

More Heartbreak for UCON

More Heartbreak for UCON

Wire Reports

Connecticut nearly pulled out a win for Jasper Howard.
Noel Devine's 56-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes lifted No. 22 West Virginia to a 28-24 win over the Huskies on Saturday in UConn's first game since the starting cornerback was fatally stabbed outside a university-sponsored dance a week ago.
Devine ran for 171 of his 178 yards in the second half as West Virginia (6-1, 2-0 Big East) overcame the inspired play of the Huskies (4-3, 1-2).
"That's what football is all about -- making big plays when your teammates need you," Devine said.
The determined Huskies outgained the Mountaineers 501-387. Sophomore quarterback Cody Endres threw for a career-high 378 yards and two scores. Marcus Easley caught five passes for a career-high 157 yards, including an 88-yard TD.
"We really wanted to go out and get this win for Jazz, but we came up short," Easley said.
Connecticut was done in by its own second-half miscues. David Teggart missed two field goal tries, and a fumble and three interceptions ended other promising drives.
West Virginia's Jarrett Brown, returning from a mild concussion sustained last week against Marshall, ran for one score and threw for another. He also threw the lead block that sprang Devine on a 62-yard run late in the third quarter, setting up Brown's 1-yard TD toss to Tyler Urban.
Kent Richardson returned one of Endres' picks 47 yards but fumbled the ball away deep in UConn territory. Endres then found Easley on a crossing route and he went down the left sideline to put the Huskies ahead 24-21 with 3:50 left.
After Devine hugged the right sideline on the go-ahead scoring run with 2:10 left, UConn drove to the West Virginia 33 before Chris Neild intercepted Endres on fourth down.
It was the third time this season that Connecticut couldn't hold a late lead.
"We just couldn't make one more play at the end," Edsall said. "It was a case where we had some big plays against us and some missed opportunities offensively. I'm so proud of these coaches and players, especially the players, for the way they came out and played this game."
Tavon Austin took the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, the first time that's happened for West Virginia since 2006. But the Mountaineers accomplished little else until late in the first half, thanks in part to UConn's relentless blitz.
Brown struggled early. He was intercepted on the Mountaineers' third offensive possession and recovered his own fumble on the next series.
It took Brown seven series to find his rhythm. He avoided three tackles and completed a 23-yard pass to Alric Arnett, then found Jock Sanders on a screen pass for a 31-yard gain that set up Brown's 5-yard scoring run.

So all this game is going to be hard to cheer, i usually love to jeer at the opposing team, alreading going to the Washington and MSU games. But this game is going to be hard to watch especially since I will be field side behind UCONN. I cannot imagine the pain and hardship they are facing now.

According to the new Sagarin Ratings, ND will be a 6 point favorite over UCon.

I hate that this game means something completely different then it did when I got the tickets. Now were just playin for a better bowl and perhaps Charlie's job. He sux in Nov., hopefully he changes that this Sat. I'd hate to spend a whole day of my life driving to and from a game we should win, just to deal with the sorrow of seeing us
lose (3) straight.

If you don't care about the games anymore than you are not a true Notre Dame fan, I want them to win everything they compete in all the time.

No doubt, I can't beleive people are even on here saying who gives a crap if we win or lose. These last (2) games mean more than just a win or a lose for a lot of different reasons. There's always something at stake!!!

I think we win for the simple fact that I think guys like Clausen and Tate are f'n sick of losing.

But UCONN will fight.

27-17 Irish
