What would be your opinion of whether or not Weis should stay as Head Coach? It would be his biggest win both in terms of the ranking/record of the opponent, but also in terms of showing his ability to motivate the players after the loss to Navy. I know a lot of people are screaming for Weis' head right now (and I don't blame you), but would a win over Pitt change people's minds?

If Weis runs the table he keeps his job and minds will be changed...

I would say that he definately NEEDS to beat Pitt after the game today. It might not keep him out of the hot seat, but it would help. I would add that he also NEEDS to beat UCONN, convincingly, and Stanford as well.

if he wins out and wins the bowl game yes....if they lose Pitt they MUST win the bowl. If they can raise a trophy at the end of the year...and a better one than the one in hawaii then keep hi then maybe jimmy will stay

What kind of chance do you think they have to win @ Pitt and @ Stanford?

Stanford just put up 51 on Oregon. You think we can stop Gerhart when we couldnt stop the Navy Fullback from busting off 30 yard chunks?

I don't think they will. Pitt is ranked high, ND hasn't beat a ranked team in awhile. It's sad that that even Purdue can beat a ranked team but we can't. Plus this is on the road, and this team doesn't play well on the road especially against a ranked team. I hope we win but I don't see it.

The offense is good but the D' well we all know how the D' is this year.......

If Charlie isn't playing in the New Year then he is gone. I don't see them beating Pitt or Stanford.

You'd think a firing would happen after the season and before the bowl game, just to give the replacement some time to salvage the recruiting class/make coaching hires. I think if they're 9-3 and going to the Gator Bowl, they would have a hard time justifying firing him. 8-4 and it would be close I think. 7-5 or 6-6 and I think they have no choice but to fire him.

We stopped Gerhart last year. I say that they CAN play better defense. The question is: will they? They had better suck it up and get some pride, they have the talent.

Well, Johnny Raincloud, you never see him doing anything positive.

No I choose to see the reality of the situation. In fact in the mid-season predictions post somewhere I predicted ND to lose a game they have no business losing.

I thought it was BCS or Bust for Weis.

According to who?

You?

You ran up the flag before halftime agasint MSU.

How many times have you ran it now 3, 4, 5?

The question asked in the first post was:

If ND were to beat Pitt....

What on God's green earth were you watching? Gerhart ran all over us last year. We were lucky to come out of that with a W

all the if he beats this or that or the other really doesnt matter. its all about progress and the major things that you need to have.

discipline and toughness.... unless charlie finds some miraculous way to get these 2 things deeply entrenched in this team i am done with him.

i have been waiting and waiting and these things which should be evident in the first year still havent happened, there is no 1 game that would make me want him to stay at this point. its an attitude thing and i dont see it changing anytime while he is at nd.

Ha! Ya caught me! I remember, but we won. I think we can win again. Not if we played like we did today, however. BC had a good running back and we kept him in check. Nevada had a few good backs and we held them, for the most part. Sorry, but I believe we are a better team than anyone else that we play the rest of the way. Yes, even Pitt.

he should stay due to many reasons. for example, the alternative is worse.

I think that is a potential reason to retain Weis. However, to say that the alternative is worse when you don't even know what the alternative is, well, that seems a bit baseless.

you're right, i'm just too lazy to list those reasons... still too drained from yesterday's game... and this massive headache this morning. promise i'll do better in a few hours.

one of the reason we shouldn't is the buyout. granted, that shrinks every year.

If I had a wheel barrel full of the what ifs that have been around this program for the last 5 years, it would be a $#%&^@%# huge wheel barrel.

I say keep Weis because I think he's too smart not to eventually figure this all out. He's on the edge of putting all the pieces together and I have to believe that he will eventually do it.

Bro. No offense, but he is not too smart. There is no decided schematic advantage.

I thought it was BCS or Bust for Weis.

While I'm as frustrated as anyone else over these losses, this is a silly assessment. Can you imagine if every 5th year coach was held to this standard?

"Basically, Coach, if we're not in a BCS bowl, you're outta here." With only 10 teams in the BCS, there would be a lot of heads rolling off the chopping block. That's not realistic. And I don't want to hear "But we're ND! We should be held to a higher standard!" Every team feels they should be held to a higher standard. No one says, "We shouldn't be held to that high of a standard!"

If the Irish win out (and I'm not saying they will... but IF they do), with a bowl game win, that makes the team 10-3. How can you fire a 10 win coach? That's ridiculous. No potential coach would come into that situation. "Yeah, it's been a dream of mine to coach at Notre Dame... but they just fired a guy who won 10 games. I'd have no job security."

Great post. Weis isn't going any where. He isn't. I don't want to live the next five years in Willingham land. This is still a young team that needs to mature.

To answer the original question, beating Pitt would be HUGE. Would it silence the critics? No. But beating a top 10-12 team on the road at night woul;d be a great accomplishment.

Also if we win out, he stays. Because that would be 2 very quality wins in the last 3 weeks.

Dont ask me if I really believe that they will win out, because I am not making a prediction. Just answering the original question.

Not the young team thing again. The offense that couldn't punch that ball in the end zone yesterday is led by a junior QB, junior WR and a junior/senior laden offensive line. The young team argument just isn't sensible.

Not much of a chance. Pitts running attack wil be hard to stop also. if I were a betting man I would say we will beat UConn and lose to both Pitt and Stanford.

It would take a miracle for us to beat Pitt. If this game is within 2 scores it will be surprising. I'm having nightmares of Lewis running all around our defense.

So... because we can't stop the triple option, everyone assumes we can't stop a one or two back rushing attack? Wow.
