I was grateful for my testicles.

When I had them.

I had a pet name for them. I called them "my balls."

Good times.

i don't care that he chirps at opponents. we don't even know what he's saying. there's a line he would have to cross in order for chirping to become unsportsmanlike. but to assume he's talking shit as opposed to talking trash (which i think are two distinct things) doesn't give him enough credit.

and in response to the crist reaction. crist is better than skipping two balls to an open receiver. at this level you simply can't do that. even without game time minutes in a month. it's not like he's hasn't thrown a ball. i'd react the same way. now if he got in crist's face about it, a la TO, then there would be a problem.

stop being so sensitive. it's football. not a tea party. tate has earned, beyond reason, the ability to trash talk on the field.

A lot of the great NFL players show a lot of emotion like Golden. Peyton Manning chews out players who are messing up. Seriously people. Don't watch football if you are a pansy like this.

Probably why he shouldn't be. This isn't the football your father watched. Same can be said for just about every sport. Blame Sports Center but he needs to take his blood pressure meds & head back outside to yell at the neighborhood kids for cutting through his yard.

I for one enjoy Tates intensity & determination & that's exactly what I see it as. The only thing I've seen from him I disliked was the drum smack in the SC game.

Yeah, the football your father watched had ND winning championships.

Regarding Tate, after his catch at the end of the first half last week I've decided to stop the criticism of his "T.O." behavior. No fan, but I respect his effort.

Yeah I agree Tates attitude is a little arrogant. but honestly thats what we need more of! Its confidence. its what USC Florida Michigan...etc have! not this pathetic..."we really believe we can win" attitude. Its in your face I'm the boss and I'm GOING to win attitude. Without it...your just a average player and a losing player at that.

Interesting how the posters always talk about ND being better than USC, Florida, Michigan, etc but then turn around and say how ND needs to emulate USC, Florida, Michigan, etc.

i agree that it's interesting how a couple of people would miss that logical discrepancy, but i don't think it's as expansive of a problem as you imply.

I would question Tim Prister to the fact that many of Holtz's teams had guys who would showboat after certain plays, TD's, first downs, sacks, whatever the mood called for. When Holtz was spanking top ranked teams, I can't ever recall anyone questioning their antics on the field, hell, I remember watching a replay of the 86' game between ND-SC, when the FB scored a TD, he ripped his helmut off and was dancing in the endzone with the entire OL and the WR corps that ran onto the field. I just don't understand the pissing and moaning about Golden, when it was done some 20 years ago, but it was ok when ND was steamrolling teams left and right.

I don't recall th rocket, Tim Brown or Reggie Brooks pulling these "look at me" postures. With that said if we don't incur any penalties I don't care that much. I want to win and dominate but I want to think we are better than programs like USC, Fl St. Miami, Fl etc. No other program has the class that ND has and I like team celebration in th end zone but not the solo look at me routines. When Floyd is back th overall team production should increase but expect GT's production to go down and for him to disappear out of th Hesiman top 10. When he rturns a couple of kicks for a TD he can gt back in the top 10. GT is awesome but if he stays next year he will be ranked bhind Floyd in the top WR in CFB.

USC's players are leading with their helmets and stomping on Jimmy's injured foot. Florida is eye gouging players. Michigan is punching players. Golden is posing. How is that emulating? that is a big jump in behavior that some posters are making.

He's not arrogant or cocky... He has swagger...

Main Entry: 1swag·ger
Pronunciation: \ˈswa-gər\
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): swag·gered; swag·ger·ing \-g(ə-)riŋ\
Etymology: probably from 1swag + -er (as in chatter)
Date: circa 1596
intransitive verb
1 : to conduct oneself in an arrogant or superciliously pompous manner

That was funny, its true he is cocky. Its also true that not all great players conduct themselves in that manner. But its ok for the team to have an attitude. Like i said before the team has not been over the top with celebrations, they do not play dirty and they do not behave like USC, Michigan, or Florida so stop comparing Golden to those kids.

Nowhere in my comment did I equate Tate to USC, Florida or Michigan.

Reminds me of how we comment that Urban is a dirty scumbag but we sure would like him to be our coach. Huh?? If we think we have something like principles then they should guide our behavior.

Golden Tate-Heisman Trophy contender, All American this year no doubt, won multiple games for ND this year(and previous two), winner who makes huge catches in the clutch, taken over as go to man after Floyd went down, most versatile player on our team.......

Good for the team or bad for the team, pick a side. I say he is good for the team, i support him. If you think he is bad for the team, keep dogging on the guy.

What do you guys want? Our boys to just go out and not show emotion???? Lets have them walk out like zombies and just play the game. Just go through the motions. Hell, that makes exciting football.

Was i the only fan who was pissed when Dane threw the passes in the dirt, and made an emotional reaction? Or when our other guys make a bad play, you dont get upset do you? When charlie makes a bad call, you dont yell at the TV or anything right?

If you do, you are all HYPOCRITES for showing a poor emotional reaction to the plays on the field. I dont like you for it. Tate at least backs his shit up on the field, so just let him do his thing because dammit hes doing it well. Hes a competitor ON the field, class act OFF of it, exactly what you want in a football player.

This thread seriously pisses me off. Priester is a classic media piss of shit that will print what causes controversy and he can go suck a fat one.

No, but you equated his behavior with that of USC, Michigan, and Florida. As for Urban, i have been one of the most vocal posters here about not wanting him anywhere near ND

I don't think people are hating on Tate. The whole thing can be summed up like this:

1. Some people feel that Tate is going too far with his antics, and might eventually cost the team a win due to a stupid penalty.

2. The Tate Group is saying that there is "nothing wrong" with what Tate is doing.

3. The conversation inevitably evolves into a discussion about the "right" or "wrong" of his on field behavior.

I don't care that the guy flexes or struts around like a gd peacock. I DO care if that behavior results in a penalty that puts his team in a hole that they can't get out of. I think what most people are saying, is that he should be cognizant of the hole that he might put his team in, if the refs decide enough is enough. And, with him starting to get national exposure, and a reputation for taunting(deserved or not, he has one), it won't be long until one of these officiating crews decides that they are not going to put up with it. Put the team first, Golden. Your play on the field will get you on Sportscenter. Don't put your team (and especially this defense) in a hole because you want to see your mug on TV.

Theres enough stupid penalties going around by several players on this team that nobodys writing an entire article about. Tate is being singled because of his recent rise in popularity & in my opinion is the very reason the author chose to write this article about him. If I want notoriety I'm gonna criticize the big fish everybodys paying attention rather than somebody whose name you barely know.

In my eyes an article from a ND alumn should never bring negative attention to a player like this. It's counter productive. You're bringing what has thus far been viewed as harmless, to the forefront of everybodys thoughts surrounding Tate. Including the possibility of a ref or officiating crew from a future game coming across this article. While they may not run out & start flagging Tate for every little thing, it certainly plants the seed.

I also find it very laughable that people think his antics are product of a desire to be on Sports Center or to show off on TV. These kids are not getting the respect they deserve. From opposing teams to the national media. Nobody but we as true fans belives in this team. You don't think this plays into their mindset? You don't think they have something to prove? When Golden makes a huge play or makes defenders look dumb to me thats what he saying. Take when he scored on USC & stared down Taylor Mays for instance. Thats what he was saying... "Yeah I'm that player from that "shit" team that just made you look absolutely stupid" He didn't dance, he didnt say "ooh everybody look at me", & he didn't delay the progress of the game. He stared down a top athlete that gets all kinds of respect & simply walked away.

Some of the replies in this thread make me realize why we're so hated as fans. You're never satisfied. You take one of the brightest spots on this team & completely tear it down. Makes absolutely no sense to me. What Tate has done for this team this season outweighs any penalty that has yet to happen by so far it's astronomical & yet we have this unreasonable desire to sit here harp on it. Some of you even go so far as to say that just because we choose to believe it's not a big deal that we're now favor a team that would be more like USC or FLA which is total horeshit & is nothing more than a bad tactic to devalue our point of view.

*sniffs* That is some stinky bait. Again, the discussion is not about whether his antics are "right", or "wrong". It's about not taking unnecessary risks which could lead to a drive killing (perhaps game losing) penalty. No one is "tearing Tate down". If anything, it is the Tate supporters who are being blind. Just because the kid is a tremendous football player, that doesn't mean that he is above scrutiny. I can love the kid's play on the field, but wish he would tone his attitude down. That doesn't mean that I am "tearing him down".

I've already posted in this thread, so I guess I'll be known as, "one of those whiners"!

Look, I don't dislike Tate, hell, I don't even know the guy, what he has done between the whistles has been great to watch, the guy deserves the national recognition, and should be proud of his on field achievements, my only gripe is, I'd rather see him do it with some respect/class, I don't want to see us become a Florida/USC/Michigan/Lemmings.

We are NOTRE DAME!!!

We're simply better than this, and we need to act like it.

Spike the ball/chest bump/high 5 etc, celebrate as a team, not as an individual.

Strange that the last time we "really" showed our respect and class, was against this weeks opponents after they beat us in 07, and we did it as a team!

Things can be Golden, Tate just needs to realize it!

Disagree on the last time this team showed respect and class... Jimmy waiting for Forcier's interview to be over to congratulate him on his performance and win was about as respectful and classy as you can get.
