Is this from linebacker Smith?

No, ND LB Brian Smith commenting on recruits would be an NCAA recruiting violation.

This Brian Smith has been doing ND football recruiting since around 1996. I spent an evening at the Backer with him and Mike Frank before the '97 Blue and Gold game discussing ND recruiting. I was doing recruiting for the Irish Recruiting Journal (free internet board) back then while "smitty" had recently joined Mike's fledgling recruiting service. Back then Mike lived in Nebraska, worked for a mortgage lender (IIRC), and was doing the recruiting service work as a second job. Shortly after that B&G game smitty moved to South Bend to give them a local presence. Since then I believe smitty has been associated with a couple of recruiting services and has done free lance work writing recruiting articles for a number of recruiting services including Blue and Gold.

I've found him in the past to be knowledgeable. If he knows, he says so and when he doesn't he make up news or play the Lemming games.

I'm ready for this guy to commit, think he will be a great addition. We could use his size inside. The one thing I noticed comparing us to USC was there size up front compared to ours. Our Specialty players especially on offense compare to anyones in the country and might be the best, but we need some speed on defense and some size up front. Harrison Smith in the secondary is killing me by the way.

If we get Nix, I don't think we can complain about other schools "poaching" players that had previously committed to another school. In the last five years, we'll have WAY more players flip TO us as opposed to AWAY from ND.

this guy would be a huge get, we need a monster inside that can draw double teams and stuff runs, this would do wonders for our defense.

According to an alum I know in the booster club, Nix's committment is a forgone conclusion.

You know Kim Dunbar?

ND shut down the QB Club, aka, football booster club, right after the Dunbar affair(s).

Are you talking about someone in the Notre Dame Club?

This kid could really make my weekend going into Saturday - then to be further buoyed by Clausen, Tate and Te'o...

Sorry for the semantics. Bosster Club = ND Club. Yes, he's a lawyer in Indianapolis who works closely with my father.

So is this guy somewhat of a soft verbal or silent commit to us right now or something? There is so much smoke here there has to be something to it.

Nothing has been said in the SB Tribune about him. I think he is keeping on the down low for now.

Irishandy - come on.... Nix could knock on Lesar's door and ask if he could move in until classes start and that moron would give him room then sit at his word-processor thinking of anti-Irish shit to write and miss the story. I'm sorry he's one goofy bastard. Clueless - but likes to try and push his hater view. Hansen's a nice guy but neither of those guys are ever moving up in the field of journalism. South Bend Trib sport's suck...

IrishAndy - don't understand your comment - because I'm local I know just how bad the Tribune is - even with regard to Irish coverage? - - Didn't Haugh make his name and route to Chicago by attacking ND? Lesar is a bad writer and has no where to go. Hansen is a little better - not a true hater as is Lesar.
Or, are you agreeing with me - that I DO know - because I'm local. Sarcasm or what?

Not worried - however - reminds me of the line in the song by John Prine: Illegal Smile: And, all of my friends turned out to be.. insurance salesmen.. but fortunately, I have the key.. to escape reality.. (when speaking of having a bad day and their (friends) sincerity)...

In two years a defensive line of Martin, Nix, Ego Ferguson and Leuders sounds pretty good to me.

In two years a defensive line of Martin, Nix, Ego Ferguson and Leuders sounds pretty good to me.

I honestly feel we have little to no shot at Ferguson, and Martin still worries me. However, I will take any athletic d-linemen from the South Florida area, and Nix already has the body to play D-1 immediately.

Landing him, in addition to the development of Stockton, Cwynar, Williams, and Newman, does bode well for our future.

Question, our lone DT commit, Justin Utupo, is listed at 6-2 and 240 lbs. Someone please explain to me how they see him putting on the necessary weight to play college football at that position. He needs to put on 40 pounds, at the very least, and his body frame does not seem to be able to support such a gain.

KLM also came in at like 230 lbs. so I think he won't have a problem gaining the weight.
