Trickery

I don't know why, but I have the feeling that Charlie is hiding some trick plays for this weekend. I feel like he has had one eye on this game for the whole year, and that he has something big planned for Saturday. Thoughts?

From day one, ND had game planned for Michigan and U$C. I'm sure he's got a damn good plan with a little bit of tomfoolery ready to go.

Not alot of trickery please. Either line up in the Wildcat and run it straight at them or line up in an I-formation and run it straight up the gut. That's what you have to do with teams that possess alot of speed. Running right at them negates the speed. All that depends on the O-line of course. If we can't run it up the middle, we are in trouble.

trickery won't win this game. execute on both sides of the ball and let the chips fall where they may.

Charlie needs to lay off trying to get to cute with the play calling. In the Michigan State game the Offense was flying high until he got to cute with the wildcat crap. Just call a game plan that fully maximizes the talent we have.

Didnt we score 2 tds with it that game? And they were our first TD in the 1st quarter and our first one in the 3rd quarter. The wildcat saved us that game.

No no no. They were moving the ball much better throwing the ball downfield. The specific moment in that game I am referring to is when he called 3 or 4 straight wildcat calls and we ended up 3 and 25 or something to that affect. It was dumb play calling anyway you look at it. I have no problem with a few wildcat plays here and there but to completely abandon the passing game at that point was not a smart move.

That was the result of a hold and a disastrous screen pass, not the wildcat.

For the record here is how the Wildcat did that game:

1st Quarter
1) Allen 13 yard run for TD on 1st and 10
2nd Quarter
1) Allen 3 yard run on 3rd and 4
2) Tate runs for loss of 1 (the play where it was a designed pass and Tate held on to it) on 1st and 10
3) Allen 6 yard run on 2nd and Goal from the 7
3rd Quarter
1) Allen 5 yard run on 2nd and 6
2) Allen 5 yard pass to Parris for TD on 2nd and Goal
4th Quarter
1) Allen 4 yard run on 1st and 10 (play negated by unsportsmanlike conduct)
2) Allen runs for loss of 5 on 1st and 10 (tate pushed allen over in the backfield)

So that is 8 times that Weis called it. He never called it twice in a row (or 3 or 4 times like you suggested) Of those 7 plays (one of the eight was negated) ND gained 26 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. If take out that one poorly botched play where Tate ran over Allen, 6 times for 32 yards and 2 touchdowns. But ya it was pretty bad play calling.

damn I missed the fatty joke?

I have been saying it since the first time we ran the wildcat inside the 10. Watch every time, as soon as the ball is snapped the corner immediately leaves jimmy clausen and runs towards AA. This game, AA throws to jimmy in the endzone. You watch.

The problem is............USC's defense is also a bunch of very good tacklers. Pick your poison.

I dont know about trick plays.....Cough... cough... TYrone, but I think there are some plays in the "play" book CW hasnt used all season so they cant be scouted per / video. NOT trick plays but a different look which maybe effective.

The only "Trickery" I want to see tomorrow is from the defense. I want to see a coaching scheme, well executed by the players, that pressures the quarterback and stops running backs consistently without a blitz. I want to see blitzes that plant Barkley in the turf for fifteen yard losses or blow up runs five yards behind the line of scrimmage.

I want to see "trickery" that doesn't leave the secondary hung out to dry and porous – short, medium, long or XXXL. I want to see an Irish defense that lives up to its potential and continually pounds, confounds and shuts down "Southern Cal's" anemic offense.

The offense is humming. Hell, it's a note or two away from belting out an ear-numbing, glass-shattering, pitch-perfect chorale. A no huddle here and a wildcat there are fine and all that's needed.

I'm not asking for much. It's quite simple, really. Whether there's a 3, 10 or 64 on the Irish side of the scoreboard at the end of the game, I want to see a 0 on the USC side.

I expect to be liftin' me tumbler o' Jameson in a sweet, sweet victory toast come morrow's eve.
