Identity Crisis in LA: Apparently, we're not facing Southern Cal this weekend

Tim Tessalone, the Sports Information Director at Southern Cal, insists, in this year's USC Football Media Guide, that USC should not be referred to by members of the media as "Southern Cal."

Note to the media: In editorial references to athletic teams of the University of Southern California, the following are preferred: USC, Southern California, So. California, Troy and Trojans for men's or women's teams, and Women of Troy for women's teams. PLEASE do not use Southern Cal (it's like calling San Francisco "Frisco" or North Carolina "North Car.") The usage of "Southern Cal" on licensed apparel and merchandise is limited in scope and necessary to protect federal trademark rights.

This has been an issue at Southern Cal for many years. It flares up peridoically. I don't recall the explanation back then but they got really bent out of shape over it. Pressure was brought to bear on the media. Keith Jackson did an on the air "Woe Nellie!" when his sidekick on a Southern Cal v ND game called referred to Southern Cal as Southern Cal. "They don't like to be called that."

They are Southern Cal to me and always will be. I wish I was going to the game so as while getting seated I could stand up and welcome all the 'Southern Cal' people to the 'House That Rockne Built'. What a load of crap. Dont call us Southern Cal-who are these people kidding. I'll call 'em what I want to call 'em. Just get to the stadium and get ready to cheer for your team Southern Cal fan.

I rememeber this was a big deal after Cal beat them. I dont get the big deal. Southern Cal, Men of Troy, USC, Trojans, they mean the same thing, shit.

As I said before my first game was Notre Dame/'Southern Cal' 1979 and I was so impressed as to how the Notre Dame people treated the 'Southern Cal' people with dignity and class. The 'Southern Cal' people were treated like guests, it was a good thing to see because I was ready to see and feel it differently. Treat them the same way this year with the same class, welcome them to our yard, they are a fine school, 'Southern Cal' has another great team. I think Notre Dame beats 'Southern Cal' this year. What was that 4/5 Southern Cals.
