Phil Steele

Last year of Steele's Dozen Hot Seat Coaches only 5 kept their jobs:
#12 Charlie Weis
#10 Kragthorpe
#8 Mike Stoops
#6 Mike Sanford
#4 Kirk Firentz

This year Steele's list includes:
#13 Mike Price, UTEP
#12 Randy Shannon, MIA
#11 Charlie Weis, ND
#10 Pat Hill, Fresno
#9 Todd Dodge, No. Texas
#8 Doug Martin, Kent St
#7 Rich Rodriquez, Michigan
#6 Mark Snyder, Marshall
#5 Mike Sanford, UNLV
#4 Dan Hawkins, CU
#3 Al Groh, UVA
#2 Bill Lynch, IU
#1 Steve Kragthorpe, UL

#11
Charlie made my list last year and barely survived. He is probably on a hotter seat than most of the names on this list as another 6-6 or 8-5 season probably will not be tolerated. I have him here at #12 because I feel the Irish with their talent and their schedule will have a big year in 2009 and he will be off the hot seat. I think he would need to have at least 9 wins to feel secure.

The Wolverines could be an underdog in as many as 7 games this year and they really must have a winning season. I think Rodriguez will get them to a decent bowl and make major strides just like he did in his 2nd year at West Virginia. Amazingly there are a lot of Michigan alumni who think Rodriguez runs a pass-happy spread offense! In his last 6 years at West Virginia his teams averaged 270 ypg rushing the football (148 ypg pass) while Michigan in that same span had 229 ypg PASSING and just 163 ypg rush.

if charlie doesnt beat a top 25 team this year, ranked that way at the end of the season, i want him gone. that being said, he has all the talent and the staff to do it, so it shouldnt be an problem. 9 wins is not gonna cut it in my book if none of those teams are worth a damn at the end of the season.

Keep in mind that they could go 11-1 and not beat a top 25 team. Would you still want him fired then?

I know your question was directed at IA, but ...

If they go 11-1 they will most likely play a team within the top 10 (top-15 for sure) in a bowl game. Personally, I want a win in that bowl game. I could tolerate a loss as long as it isn't a blow-out. They need to be competitive; no more of the we are young excuse.

They need to be more consistent to hold a lead but I don't see "we are young" as an excuse. It was reality.

Just watch Rudolph, a Freshman All-American TE, trying to block guys 4 years older that have been in Div 1 weight rooms and on Div 1 fields for the past 4 or 5 years. Tate as spectacular as he is, is still learning to be a receiver and not a running back. The DL is obviously young.

This team is a year older and more mature but it is still young.

I'm not saying it wasn't a valid reason over the last couple of years. But, with the exception of the DL as you mentioned, this team is no younger than any of the other contenders out there.

A head coach in his 5th year. An O-line with Jrs and Srs. Players at the skill positions with 2 or more years of quality time. I just can't see "young" as being reality unless you say it about every team. They are all fielding players between 18 and 22ish.

C'mon guys Misery was Bob Davey...........trick plays w/Tyrone........Faust......You get rid of Chuck.......and there will be problems.....player transfers...etc....I want to see our dominance once again too but getting rid of the coach will set us back .......I think Coach Weis is on the brink of making this Football program great again. We cant keep changing coaches like turning in a leased car for a new one.........patience guys....

I would certainly have to agree with this. And I ask, who would we bring in, right now, today, to replace Charlie if we DID fire him? I don't see a ton of people beating down the door to take that job.

I would add Brian Kelly to that short list.

Aside from that how long does Charlie have to turn this around? The defense is a year or 2 away from being an elite squad and while the offense is firing on all cylinders Floyd and Tate will be long gone.
Now I am aware that there the other WRs waiting in the wings, but until they start playing we really have no idea how they are going to pan out.

If we get blown out by USC again, he'll probably be gone, especially since they are beatable this year...UW handled them.

I know it would cost us a lot to lose him but it would really be unacceptable.

I really want to have patience, but another blow out would be the end of his career at ND.
