Hard to believe we are one quarter thru the season already. I was expecting us to be 3-0 at this point, but not really dissapointed with the 2-1. Here are some things we have found out regarding ND and others.
Offense:
*Jimmy Clausen is THE REAL DEAL!! Nothing else to be said. If it were not for several drops his completion rate would be absolutely sick. He has shown much more pocket presence.
*Armando Allen is running much harder and showing the ability to break tackles.
*O-Line has performed really well. They are protecting JC and opening running lanes.
*Rudolph is probably the best TE in college football. Enjoy him while he is here, because next season as a Junior is his last. NFL first round
*Floyd is just a complete weapon. He will be missed big time. I did not expect him to stay 4 years in college and these injuries will make him want to go pro even faster. NFL and $$$$ are waiting for him.
*Tate has performed great, but his drops remind me of a guy named Rhema, who caught the tough and dropped the easy.
Overall our offense is among the elite in college football. We can run when we need and have/had multiple weapons. Floyd is a GIGANTIC loss. With him we beat USC, without I am not thinking so.

Defense:
*I quietly worried about the DL all off-season. Well, I was completely right in my concerns. Starting a Red-shirt Freshman(KLM), Sophmore(Ethan), Junior(Ian) and another DE that is trying but not talented at all, Ryan. These guys are just not able to get any push on their own which means others are having to help. The scary thing is that all the back-ups are freshmen or sophmores. DL is not a position for underclassmen.
*LB's Brian Smith is good, but Toryan is woefully slow and is struggling big time. T'eo is starting to get more time, but he needs to learn the system. The LB's are getting killed because the DL is not able to stop the OL.
*CB's they have to be getting tired of being left on islands all night. I hear peopled bashing them, but realize they are all alone because we are rushing 7 and still not getting to the QB. This is not fun for a DB. They are being told to keep the WR's in front of them.
*Safeties. Is McCarthy just freaking a blue collar get it done kind of guy? If his brother is as good as him, we are fortunate.
Overall, our D is being killed by a young and undertalented DL. Next season we will be much better on D with these guys gettting a year to grow and mature.
Special Teams: Our punter is about as average as average can be. Finally, I saw a couple kick offs that almost reached the end zone. The most exciting thing to me is our FG kicking. Our kicker nailed a 47-yard kick with plenty left for 50 yards.

Final Analysis of ND: Our offense will score points on every team on our schedule. Most will not even slow us down. The loss of Floyd takes us from a Top 5 elite O to a very good O. My most proud part of the O is the ability to run when the D knows we are running. Our Defense will continue to struggle against versitile offenses. Don't blame the DB's for some of the passing issues, they are protecting the big play. With all this said, we are a team capable of winning 10 games and going to a bowl, but not sure if we can beat a BCS team with our D and no Floyd. As for CW, you "Fire Charlie" people better look around long and hard at some of the other teams struggle because we are becoming a great "PROGRAM" again but you want him gone.

Other team thoughts:
UM - Much better than anyone thought
Washington - Scare me to death now with how mobile Locker, which our D struggles with
USC - Pete is showing just how AVERAGE a coach he is. He has lived on 5* talent for years, but when that is struggling he really is not a scheme guy. Would not trade CW for Pete ever. Pete is in the second hottest talent pool, next to Florida, in the country and that is why his teams do so well.
BC - This is the year we put them in their place.

GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disagree on Pete Carrol.

What i have seen

Offense:
-Jimmy is a man
-Oline has played great, Verducci might be the best hire Weis ever made
-Too many stupid penalties. Out team shoots istelf in the foot too much. We left at least 9 points on the field. (Including the bs TD my Floyd, He had possesion and two feet in wtf?)

Defense
- D line is going to burn us all year. We are depending too much on sophmores and we are playing sloppy. Too many missed tackles
- Toryan has played well but he missed some big tackles today.
- secondary has played well, we are getting burned by the blitz.

Someone on the d-line has to step up.

We have been getting alot of badbreasks but we finally caught two on the last drive.

The team has grown alot.

Beat a bad Nevada team
Lost to a bad Michigan team (please don't drink the kool aid and overrate these clowns based on one win)
Barely beat an average Michigan State team.

O looks great (with Floyd). D looks great against the WAC, terrible against the Big ten.

Clausen should get Heisman mentions, but BSPN controls that award now, so he'll never get a sniff.

There's your quarter pole summary...

Not sure how anyone believes that Pete Carrol is among the coaching elite. He is among the recruiting elite in a place where it is damn easy to recruit. Look how vanilla his team looks now with a struggling QB. No creativity.

I said (preseason) we are a year away. With Floyd back next year - all skilled positions back - and a mature D-line... we will be there.

I wish I could say Iwant CW over Pete but that's like saying we should keep CW ove Urban. I like CW's style and Blue collar approach but Pete is the D-coorinator on USC the way CW is OC for ND. Pete has charisma and came into a shit program when he got there. YEar after year Pete loses and replaces coaches but he knows how to motivate kids and teach them. Lok at his results and draft choices. I think SC's standards are for shit but I really just want to see ND win, win , win. Pete's rah, rah style would be perfect for ND but the beach boy will always stay in SoCal.

I've seen him riding his bike along the beach and have passed him by with my ND hat on. I saw a good interview on ESPN after the loss and he took it like a Pro and showed class in defeat and noted he was proud of Sark but pissed it happened. Corp will never see the field again.

You do know that Pete coaches the Defense? I think he has been rather successful at doing that. Oh yah, his former O coordinators are now head coaches across the country. I'd rather have Pete, sorry, thats the way it goes.

As for being a year away? Its beginning to look like the end imo. Next year ND loses 3 starting Oline. The Dline will still be woefully inept, and if Tenuta is still here the defense will be just as bad. There just isn't the talent to compete on the D.

Clausen is a stud, flat out. The kid has shown a lot this year, especially coming from that stretch hummer bullshit when he committed.
Floyds injury is much more worrisome then people make it out to be. This offense is going to sink, even if just a little bit. ND does not have a large margin to be on the losing end of games, especially with the D playing the way it has.
Tate, get some stickem brother.. Inexplicable drops. The sad part is once you get a case of the dropsies it gets in your head.

Everyone keeps bringing out the shutout against Nevada.. Sorry kids, while it was a goose egg on the board, the yards per carry were anything but. I posted my thoughts on the Michigan game and how nervous I was. I still figured ND would pull it out, but heh, what can you do.
Everyone posted that MSU will bring a traditional style offense better suited to our Defense.. Even without Ringer the ran on ND. Then they passed all over Walls like he was a pylon. And if not for an inexplicable pass, call it nerves or maybe the kid just has a huge boner, that non-touchdown sends ND to 1-2. Game on the line and the guy is 20 yards away from any defender, alone in the end zone?

Pure passing teams really don't win you all that much. Yah that 10-2 record looks good. But the 2 losses you got smacked in the mouth by a team with a defense and that could run the ball. Oh, that 10-2 mark? Forget it. 8-4 and a Gator bowl LOSS to FSU. (Thats if Clausen isn't seriously hurt)

We are a year away. Ya we lose 3 lineman and sure Clausen wont have the same protection next year that he has enjoyed this year, but we have 2 backups who are good enough to be rotated into the game (a rarity on the offensive line). Our D line play hasnt been good this year but this is our d-line coach's first year. Add that into tenuta not knowing which blitz packages suit our personnel best and they will struggle. and if youre referring to michigan as "smacking us in the mouth" with their defense then im assuming you didnt watch the game...

and were still going 10-2, theres 4 teams on our schedule who are capable of beating us (Washington, USC, Pitt, and Stanford) and I'm not sold on Washington or Stanford, Pitt hasnt played anyone yet, and I think I heard something about USC losing yesterday but i'm not sure....

And this is beginning to look the end? A team that starts 3 seniors on offense (I'm not counting aldridge because hughes has blocked better) and 2 on defense (and everyone seems to want te'o over toryan anyway) and is predicted by many to go to a BCS bowl. Not quite sure if I get what you mean

I don't know what our record will be, i think 10-2 but we will see. I will say that after watching the season play out there is not a team on our schedule that scares me atall. we could lose to all 4 of those teams but i am confident we can beat them right now.

Agree completely. I'm looking forward to Washington-Stanford this week. And USC-Cal next week.

10-2, really? In his first year Sarkisian has done what Weis has failed to do in 5, beat USC. I think the comparisons are valid. ND and UW were both coached by Willingham. Willingham ruined both programs.

USC has McKnight, UW has Locker and Pitt is running the ball well. Not to mention that they "held" Navy to 130 yards rushing. Stanford is just a game I believe that ND will lose, and they shouldn't.

ND on the other hand has lost Floyd for the year and Clausen is banged up. People want to make light of the Floyd injury but its going to hurt more than people think.

Oh really?? Well last I checked....

ND has Armando Allen (how many times did HE fumble this weekend?)
ND has this guy you might have heard of named Jimmy Clausen
ND has been running the ball EXTREMELY well, with their starting FB out injured

All of the negativity is really getting old - you sit there with your "ND" insignia under your name, as if to exclaim to others that you root for and support this team - well, if that is the case, then start acting like it man! And before you start to accuse me of "drinking the kool aid", realize that I, despite being a die-hard ND fan and alum, recognize this team's short comings and know we have a long way to go to get where we need to be to compete for another NC. BUT, I also know that WE ARE ND, and whether or not you understand or appreciate that, it means a ton to those of us who do.

I am a fan. On a messageboard. Talking about all things Irish. I am pointing out things that need to be discussed or debated. A lot of us bleed ND, and a lot of us are getting frustrated at where the team is right now, after 5 years of rebuilding.

And while your points are valid, and I have given heaps of praise for those boys you mentioned, the fact is its going to be an interesting ride the rest of the way without Floyd. And just in case you weren't aware, Clausen & Allen do not play defense. Who knows maybe they could help, but right now neither of them is going to stop the run.

but locker plays defense right?

usc wouldve won that game if they just stuck to the running game. washington really doesnt impress me that much. they have some talent and if they beat stanford maybe i'll be a little more impressed but beating a depleted usc team that played awful the entire game doesnt impress me too much.

Sarkisian also ran USC 's offense last year as well as having USC's former D-Coordinator. Weis also never played a one-dmiensional USC offense.

I remember Mack Brown being called a coach who couldn't win a big game and he would never beet Oklahoma. You can't compare coaches, every situation is different.

No one is making light of Michael Floyd's injury and how it will impact the team. The difference is that we have talent around him to pick up the slack, and you are suggesting that the season is over now.

We all root for our ND in our own way.

I was in a house watching an awful ND game in 07 with an extremely diehard fan who seemed to literally bleed blue and gold and raised his family on the hope of ND. When ND started losing, he said he hoped ND lost 50 to nothing every game for the rest of the season. He and everyone else in the house left to go shopping before halftime. I stayed and watched the entire game, and entire season. Every damn play.

My bud Echo Insomnia and I are gluttons for punishment, but I'll always be an ND fan.
