Defense must change...

The Doktor power rating has ND's offense at 35 and
the defense at 19. This is way out of wack, what-
ever the offense may do will be undone by defense.

What changes must be made? Smitty (Brian Smith)
has an excellent article on what needs to be done.
Too long to paraphrase, so here is the link...Tom

I think alot of Noter Dames problems will be alleviated by playing a more traditional offense and time

Hopefully Cwyner, Hafis, or Newman can get some playing time and grow.

I love Brian Smith but he is outofplace in the middle. Hopefully Te'o learning and getting more PT will allow him to play middle and maximize our talent.

DE is still a problem.
-Kerry Neal is undersized.
-Filer and Fleming are linebackers and situational passrushers
-John Ryan has played well but is not an answer
-KLM is still learning and has admitted to being nervous

There is not much that can be done with our personel. We do not have the experience and depth to fix the problem this year.

All we can really do is gameplan and hope that our offense forces teams to have to abandon the run at this point

3-4

3-4

This would be the year to go with the 3-4 since we have good LB's and weak DL's.

If you have talent, play a base defense. Stay at home and read.

Tom,

Can you provide some parameters for the 19 Defensive Power Rating?

I never understood why Kerry Neal was on the defensive line. He looks like an absolute stud whenever he plays linebacker.

Spread is irrelevant. ND couldn't stop Ringer last year.

No ND couldn't stop ringer in the 4th quarter. Same with McCoy. Notre Dame will play better on d this week just because the goal will be to stop the run and the spread option is not going to have to be accounted for.

Well if the goal against MSU is to stop the run, then its going to be a long game. That Cousins kid can throw the ball and if that Dell (I think its Dell, something like that) is playing it might spell trouble.
I'm not so worried about this game as I was about the Michigan game, but I was pretty on with my worries. (Officiating aside)

Tom,

Can you provide some parameters for the 19 Defensive Power Rating?

When I originally checked the site, I went to the ND power
line and made an ASSumption about the lopsided numbers in
the offense and defense columns.

When I went back to reply to your question, the columns
start out heavily lopsided offense to defense, but by
the 120th team, the columns completely reversed. I
knew I was in trouble.

I apologize to you and everyone in this thread for pass-
ing points/game off as power ratings. Although in my
defense, it turned out to be a decent thread.

Tom
