Notre Dame-mich

Couple of comments on the game in the Big House, first off I dont have the nastiness for mich like many of our posters as I respect them and see their program not unlike what my beloved Irish try to do, I think they get it right. But this week after the bloodletting 2yrs ago I want to see a thumping. I dont think I'll get that but I still remember the scoreboard picture in SI and how the nation just loved it. This is a toughman game and may be very close. If it is not close we learn alot about this Notre Dame team. The silver lining is Robert Hughes gets a chance to play the position he is made for. If he takes to this like I think he might more pieces fall into place for this group to be really good. Notre Dame must go up there with a mindset that mich is waiting for them and do not 'blink'. I liked the speed of mich's offense last week, but while watching last weeks game against Nevada I saw a QB running for cover and alarmed. Do that this week and you win.

Also nice when ND fans do the same.

Amen to that! Nice to see at least a little positivity on the boards. A win this Saturday will keep the anti-Coach Weis sentiments at bay for a little longer.

I do have respect for UM in that I've seen too many games I thought we should romp and didn't and visa versa - also, it's the big house (which has meant less the last 2 years than in years passed).

I still say it will be ND: 31 - 21. And, I think I'm underestimating........ the Irish.

i have no doubt he is fast and ellusive, i seen that one play all over the highlight reels. and its even more immpresive that it was his first play. but i wasn't able to watch too much of that game but was he ever tested by actually having a good hit layed on him?

He played quite a few more series during the game and threatened to break more, but did not. His stats the rest of the day were OK, but no TD's.

He showed:
Unreal speed AND quickness - by that I mean his straightline speed is genuine world class 4.3, but his cuts and moves are equally fast and make him very, very difficult to tackle, much less get a big hit into him
As a result, he did get hit but most ended up being glancing blows or guys holding on to ankles for dear life
He actually can throw ... not as well as Forcier, but he completed several passes and showed some touch on the run, if the defense sells out to stop his runs, he will throw over them
He's a true freshman with one month on campus and in college football ... he probably has about 25% of playbook totally down and it showed, he spent way too much time looking for his next home run ball rather that churning out first downs and using his other weapons
Against a better defense, this will be death ...

Bottom line, and I mean this honestly, any defense facing him coming into the game better be ready .... he is a legitimate, major threat. Easily the fastest guy I've ever seen in a UM uniform. As you saw on the highlight reel, if he gets a seam ... forget about it, no one's going to touch him.

Equally true however is that Forcier is "the guy" ... he has much better all around skills, ability to read defense and ability to run the playbook and employ the other weapons on the offense (and there's more than you realize right now ... RR has already stockpiled an inventory of smallish, lightening fast slots and backs that will cause big damage.) Forcier will also surprise you with his quickness, ability to run and some toughness. He is smallish, but ND may have a hard time getting the big hit on him.

If they do, and Forcier goes out ... Denard is not ready for full time, and Nick Sheridan, god love him, should be on the practice squad.

Denard is a real danger, but Forcier will determine the game for UM's offense.

best,
rob

Absolutely, that's what I was hoping for when I stopped in. Bottom line, we're rooting for opposite sides, but we're all here because we're excited about the game, the game, the game ....

I will be there .... I've must have seen every ND game at UM for decades now .... it's two great programs and two schools that operate on pride, tradition and winning.

Hail to the victors, and may the best team win.

You do know that Robinson's touchdown was a blown play and wouldn't have happened if Michigan had properly executed the play?

Notice the scores on some of this ESPN picks - Eastern Washington scoring 17, Wyoming scoring 10, Arkansas State scoring 21, Troy......
And we get "Yeah, but Nevada is a WAC school."

Nevada plays in the WAC, the conference that has sent two teams to the BCS in the last three seasons.

Indeed ... his real first play was stopped on a penalty, the next snap, "the play", he actually fumbles the ball then freelances all of it. It was designed as a reverse to Odoms. (who to his great credit, realized the breakdown and shot like a bullet into the chest of the nearest enemy uniform.)

As I said ... he's a freshman and he looked like it, superman or no.

Rivals.com College Football - Weekend primer: Plenty of important games

Sigh. More Rivals.com Anti-Irish crap.

Michigan win predicted.

May I say that the college football media tends to "over react" to signs of life from either UM or ND. I always thought that went to the heads of our guys at times under Carr ... too many times they came out thinking they were the schnitz and got their butts knocked around by an inferior team.

I don't really like the pick (as much as I want it to be right on the money) ... logic and "on paper" analysis favors ND.

We shall see ... tomorrow is the day.

I can see it now. "We only lost because our WR was out. If he was in we would have beaten you guys."

I personally will never say that ... but it is a bad blow for us. Hemmingway is our best wideout right now and had a terrific game against WMU.

We don't really have "a Braylon Edwards" type wideout on the team this year (I know ...you DO) ... but Hemmingway has the potential to be a game buster in his own right. It does hurt us ...

(PS - watch out for the TE, Koger. Buzz out of UM training camps were huge on this guy and he was pretty awesome in the WMU game with a true circus catch or two and a TD ... big kid, blocks too.)

Okay, I don't drink - but, I'm sure I just heard Matt Millan say on college football live that UM has the athletes to handle the corners - "that being Tate and Floyd" - so the answer will be how well they can contain ND up the middle?????? That was his answer to the outcome of the game?????

If Matt Millan knows anything, it is how to evaluate talent. That is why the Lions are in the cat bird seat this year. The real question would be why would anyone ask Matt Millan anything about football.

There are two scenarios for Koger:

1. Michigan manages to avoid Tenuta's relentless blitzing. In this scenario, everything depends on whether Koger can get open against Kyle McCarthy, a fifth-year senior and one of the best players on our defense, or Harrison Smith, who runs a 4.4.

2. Michigan cannot stop Tenuta's blitzing. Forcier is sacked multiple times and a couple of run plays have been blown up in the backfield. Koger spends all day blocking and therefore is not a factor.

Who are these people picking Michigan?

From what I have seen from both teams over the last few years and I have to say, Michigan WILL be good once RichRod gets his athletes into place. Right now, he just does not have them.

Michigan getting those athletes will make them, the Big Ten, and Notre Dame better teams because the bowl games will not be the first time any of them face the Spread Offense with great athletes.

This year is about 1 and a half or 2 years before that happens.

Notre Dame by 20.

Michigan injury report for Notre Dame game
September 10,

Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

Michigan has released its injury report for Saturday's home showdown against No. 18 Notre Dame (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET).

OUT
  • Guard Tim McAvoy (knee)
  • Quarterback Nader Furrha (shoulder)
  • Running back Fitzgerald Toussaint (shoulder)
QUESTIONABLE
  • Wide receiver Junior Hemingway (ankle)
PROBABLE
  • Running back Brandon Minor (ankle)
Good news on Minor, the team's projected starter entering the season. He practiced all week and even went through warm-ups last Saturday against Western Michigan before sitting out. Expect senior Carlos Brown to get the start against the Irish, but Minor should get on the field as well.

Hemingway could be a big loss if he sits out, given how well he played last week and his obvious rapport with quarterback Tate Forcier. The sophomore led the Wolverines with five receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns against the Broncos. ...

Hemingway would be a bigger loss to UM than Aldridge to ND.

UM v ND Staff Predictions The Staff of TheWolverine.com

UM v ND Staff Predictions The Staff of TheWolverine.com

TheWolverine.com - Staff Predictions: Michigan vs. Notre Dame

The picks:

Chris Balas: Watching the 1986 Michigan - Notre Dame game recently on the Big Ten Network brought back great memories (Jamie Morris, Jim Harbaugh and the option. Being able to watch Lou Holtz squirm on the sidelines instead of having to hear him) ?

Seriously, has this game ever been so hard to predict? We've heard suggestions Notre Dame will win because it has better athletes ? we disagree. They might win because they have more experienced athletes, but ?

Michigan 24, Notre Dame 23

John Borton: We could go for the trifecta this week - Michigan knocks off Notre Dame, USC undresses The Vest in The Shoe, and Terrelle Pryor's favorite quarterback gets dragged by a Doberman on his way to the stadium. Of course, that's unnecessarily harsh on reformed dog destroyers, so we'll stick with the first two. Charlie goes back to the Chocolate Factory for solace, staring at 1-1.

Michigan 28, Notre Dame 24

Michael Spath: Pouring through the chats that I did over at IrishIllustrated.com and Pete Sampson did here on The Fort yesterday, something struck us both - Notre Dame and Michigan fans are eerily similar and hate to admit it. They both have an embattled coach, both had an impressive opening week, both have more talent than 90 percent of the opponents they face and both believe they never get beat (instead that they beat themselves).

Face it U-M fans, ND is your evil step-brother. And unfortunately, I now have two Irish step-brothers I must tolerate at holiday gatherings (I hope my mom doesn't read this or it's no more allowance for me!). It is imperative the Wolverines take care of business so my younger brother (another Michigan grad) and I have bragging rights all year.

So I hope I'm wrong about this, but ?

Notre Dame 28, Michigan 21

Matt Pargoff: I could sit here and make fun of Josh for his pick last week, but I figure that everyone else has already taken care of that. And besides, what an easy target. Instead, I'd like to point out that Balas, Borton, Spath, Jon Chait and Ace Anbender each picked Michigan to give up at least 20 points to
Western. Good call guys.

Balas should have known better than to make last week's prize a Detroit Lions back-to-back preseason champions t-shirt. Put something valuable like that on the line and you know I'll be on target.

Oh yeah, the Notre Dame game. I'll be honest - I have no idea what is going to happen in this game. Normally I think I've got a pretty good feel for these things, but yeesh, have you ever seen two fan bases getting more excited about beating a couple of pushover opponents? Hooray, we're both at least average this year! That gets to remain as the consolation prize of a close loser to this game.

Michigan 24, Notre Dame 23

Josh Helmholdt: Before you start spitting barbs my direction for this pick, remember how well it worked out for Michigan last week.

Notre Dame 27, Michigan 23

Jonathan Chait: Here's the problem with trying to predict these Michigan-Notre Dame games: you think you have a perfect handle on how the game will play out, but then the whole thing comes down to something like whether touchdowns will be awarded to quarterbacks who come within two yards of the goal line before fumbling (answer: close enough!) or to quarterbacks who appear to cross the plane with their entire upper torso (answer: no touchdown, and no, we won't review it.) Not that I'm bitter.

Anyway, Rich Rodriguez proved last year that he is a true Michigan Man by following the hallowed tradition of pushing Notre Dame up and down the field but watching his players discover ever more ridiculous ways to lose. If there was a real scandal around Michigan football, it would probably be that last year's team shaved points against Notre Dame. Lots and lots and lots of points. Not that I'm bitter.

Anyway, my lesson from last week is to ramp down the specificity and give yourself a chance. So: Michigan runs for a lot of yards but passes for relatively few. Notre Dame passes for a lot of yards but rushes for relatively few. The key to the game: Notre Dame remains coached by Charlie Weis, who regularly beats up on inferior opponents but has never beaten a team that finished in the top 20. Question: is Michigan a top 20 caliber team? I'll say... at this point in the year .... with the defense still healthy... assuming Minor and Hemingway can perform reasonably well... yes.

Michigan 31, Notre Dame 28

Blue & Gold Preview

Blue & Gold Preview

9/14

UM Run v ND Defense - EVEN
No Sam McGuffie who had 82% of UM's rushing yds in last year's game. Brandon Minor is probable with a high ankle sprain. Freshman Forcier is mobile.

UM Pass v ND Defense - ND
Odums and Matthews had 850 yds between them last year. Forcier looked good against WMU. 3 QBs sharing time.

ND Run v UM Defense - EVEN
UM transitioning from 4-3 to 3-4 under new DC Robinson. Graham and Ezeh keys

ND Pass v Michigan Pass Defense - ND
Brown's move to "Spinner" the hybrid LB adds athleticism to cover slot receivers, RBs, and TEs. His move from Safety weakens another position.

Special Teams - EVEN
UM pun coverage $5 in '08. Punter Mesko has a big foot. Odoms is home run threat.

Coaching - EVEN
Both coaches on hot seat.

Intangibles - EVEN
A UM win would quiet down Rodriquez detractors. ND is only 1-4 in last 5 trips to Big House but Weis owns that only win.

Analysis
Irish are further along in rebuilding than UM. Greg Robinson new DC/new system. Clausen has more experience with his receivers. Overall ND should be more in sync.

Predictions
Burlage ND 20 UM 13
Haynsworth ND 37 UM 17
O'Leary ND 28 UM 16
Sapp ND 24 UM 10
Somogyi ND 21 UM 20

A range of 1 point to 20.

I actually think this guy was the most sane out of all of them. Pretty funny too. I think his prediction will be wrong, but not everyone is going to predict a ND win, least of all a Mich man.

Thanks for the reports BGIF. What it proves is that if you are ND guy, you're picking your team to win, and if you're a Mich guy, you MIGHT be picking your team to win. ND is favored, on the road, for a reason: More talent, more experienced talent, UM is rebuilding, ND has rebuilt (I hope!!!). Can't wait for the game...less than 10 hours away!!!

Wow game day and to be honest it really doesn't feel like it. I am to use to the atmosphere around ND's campus so normally right now I am drinking and preparing wings. I am still excited and predict big things will come from this game.

ND 38 UM 10 GO IRISH!!!!!!!

On a side-note:
My wife is due to have our second son September 26th. We went to the doctors earlier this week and they believe she could go into labor anytime. I told her she needs to wait until after this game is over.
