A question instantly came to mind when Tulsa World sportswriter Eric Bailey broke yet another huge story this week on Tulsa athletics.
Bailey, who has more insider information on TU sports than any media person in this city, state or country, first revealed on tulsaworld.com that the Golden Hurricane was in serious negotiations with Notre Dame about playing a football game against the Irish in 2010.
The question Bailey’s scoop raised was this: When is Notre Dame going to finally live up to its agreement to play a home-and-home series with Oklahoma?
Those who have followed Sooners football for the past several years know OU athletic director Joe Castiglione has been waiting for Irish officials to sign and return the contract that has been on their desk for several years.
Castiglione started working on the deal shortly after OU agreed to a 1999 game at Notre Dame. The Irish rallied to defeat the Sooners, 34-30, in OU coach Bob Stoops’ first season.
Although Notre Dame has switched AD’s since the contract was drawn up, Castiglione still believes the two-game series will take place during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
“No signed contract, yet,” Castiglione wrote in an e-mail. “But they have told me several times they are definitely set. I have their word.”
Notre Dame holds a commanding 8-1 series lead over OU, which dates back to 1952. The most famous OU-Notre Dame, of course, was the Irish snapping the Sooners’ NCAA record 47-game winning streak with a 7-0 win in Norman on Nov. 16, 1957.
Castiglione praised TU athletic director Bubba Cunningham for using the contacts Cunningham built while working at Notre Dame to get the Irish to consider the game, which reportedly would be played Oct. 30, 2010 in South Bend, Ind.
“Good for Tulsa,” Castiglione wrote.
OU now awaits Notre Dame to make good on its word.
