This excerpt is taken from Bert Berry's (honorary head coach) press conference after the Blue & Gold game regarding potential improvements in the off-season:

"I would say, from a defensive standpoint, that the one thing they need to do is get in shape. A lot of these guys, particularly the younger guys, were getting a little winded out there, and when you get winded that's when you find the mental breakdowns. A lot of times, that's just due to a lack of being in shape, so they just need to do a little extra running. They seem to have a lot of talent out on the field. It's exciting to see [Robert Blanton], and the offense looked good. There were some plays out there where they looked very solid at running back. The one place where I saw glaring need was in the endurance level, on the defensive front in particular. Those guys really need to take advantage of the summer program and get some extra running in. As long as they are in shape, they should be a pretty formidable group. They are going to be a shorter but faster group, so they're going to have to rely a lot on speed and scheme to make things happen. They can get it done. It's just a matter of them wanting to and whether or not they can perform on Saturdays."

The Notre Dame football team has been soft for several years under Weis now. The so-called nasty that Weis promised has never really come to light. I remember the first off-season before the 2005 season...the players made it very clear that they had never worked so hard conditioning their bodies in their lives and that they were in great shape for the season. Fast forward a few years and it appears that aggressive conditioning is no longer a concern of Weis and Mendoza. The whole team (with some exceptions) is soft. Strong, conditioned, nasty, and hard-nosed teams don't blow double-digit leads...those kinds of teams turn those games into blowouts. We don't have that kind of team. I don't get the impression that anything has changed in the strength and conditioning program.

I think this indictment by Berry is a rather troublesome realization. Last year they made it a priority for our lineman to put on weight...in some instances it looks like they have just gotten fat. I have preached this for a long time but I think Mendoza has to go and Weis needs to recommit to getting this team into the best shape of their lives. I think there are a few players that understand this and do have the nasty attitude and the proper endurance to finish games (i.e. McCarthy). On the whole, this team isn't going to be able to hang in the 4th quarter with teams like USC.

actually, i dont mind them being out of endurance shape right now to be honest. now is the time to add weight, pack on muscle, and not worry about being in top football shape as long as they are gaining the pounds(preferably muscle, though fat does give energy that can help produce the muscle)

when i was in HS, i gained 50 pounds from freshman to senior year. i played bball in the winter, so it was impossible to gain weight then. spring time was my time to pack on the weight. i didnt play any sports then, and would literally refuse to run anywhere and would only walk so i wouldnt lose weight. soon as mid june hit though, my ass was outside running everyday. lost the fat, kept the good weight.

so as long as they bust ass this summer, im not worried. BFS is always the goal of any football player.

Hardly a glowing endorsement. Maybe his(B.Berry) statements are out of tough love, so the team works hard this summer. "having to rely on speed and scheme" sounds like they wont be able to rely on their talent. Like last year when they thought they needed to blitz almost every play....we'll find out over the next few months.

Weis has been criticized in the past for running 'pro-style' practices that invlove less 'full pad contact'. The thought being that college kids still need that 'full pad contact' to develop skills. Whereas in the NFL, less contact in practice equates to less wear and tear on personnel.

I agree that endurance wise the players should not be peaking at this point (April). However, if the past three seasons are indications of what kind of shape our players are in during the season then I refuse to chalk up the condition they are in now to it simply being the off-season and time to pack on weight. They all should be bulking up, but they should be building up their endurance as well and I don't get the impression that endurance conditioning is a point of emphasis in the Notre Dame football strength & conditioning program. Hopefully some of the players will take what B. Berry said personally and get into shape.

Great posts! I, too, have been calling for Mendoza's removal for a few years now. I thought when they whacked Latina, they would go down the hall to Mendoza's office and give him the boot too. Alas, that was not the case. I have questioned his methods for some time now. I don't think they should necessarily be in "game shape" at this point in the year, but I also don't think they should be getting winded in a scrimmage or practice. I hope it motivates them to go out and hit the stairs and the track and start getting their endurance up. I don't know what the reason was for keeping Mendoza, but this has been an issue for too long.

I vote - Irishmarine for ND strength and conditioning coach!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree! But I do think we have been a little soft. Blowing leads, letting teams run over in our house is not acceptable at the greatest college football program ever. PERIOD!

Back to what Dan Devine said in the movie RUDY, right before they go out on the field before the Georgia Tech Game, "no one and I mean no one comes into our house and pushes us around". We need to get back to that mentality, and that is attained not only by being mentally prepared, but physically prepared as well.

I flew over there (reindeer can do that...) at 4:22. You weren't there. They said you went to Target to buy some socks.

You sure have a lot of plants growing all around your place.

The major concern is that ND doesn't have enough "studs" on the D-line, as compared to LB & DB positions! TALENTED depth on the line just isn't there (yet), so endurance for the ones that can perform well on the D-line is a must!

yeah, I totally agree... the D line is one of the keys this year and if we don't have the staying power we may get run out the building in the fourth quarter of a few games

Last year I constantly wondered why ND seemed to never get to the QB, even with their new and improved blitzing system. I'm sure numbers would suggest an improvement, it just seemed like teams were constantly picking up our blitzes. I couldn't figure out if they were to predictable -or they just didn't bring it enough (physically or speed wise). I agree ND does need more of a nasty attitude. I'm not sure how much that has to do with the so called conditioning problem. I have a hard time believing that a major D1 progam athletes aren't in good enough shape to compete. If that is the problem Weiss needs to go, conditioning should be a given in this day and age.

I think that is part of the problem. In the NFL, conditioning is a given as the athletes are professional and realize that they must be in the best shape possible if they want to continue earning a paycheck playing football...very little motivation to work is necessary from a coaching staff. In college, the student-athletes must be motivated and guided to get themselves into great football shape (with obvious exceptions, i.e. Brady Quinn).
