My fiance (ND 2006) just told me that she heard from friends at ND that Barrack Obama will be the Commencement speaker for ND's graduation. I don't get into politics on this site, but I do think think this is especially interesting, esp because it involves ND and all. I'm a conservative who is giving Obama my support because I love this country, but politics aside, I think it says a lot about ND that the president is speaking at its graduation...

This actually kind of bugs me. I mean, for the president to speak at Notre Dame does speak volumes about the impact that ND has on our country, but i just dont like academic institutions to get involved with politics i guess. My college played the Obama inaugeration in every building...... im certain they didnt do the same for the Bush inaugeration.

my sister said that students are going to turn when he speaks

But how many? My fiance is a bleeding heart democrat and she's excited as hell, and all her friends that I've met at ND have been liberals as well. From the people she's been dealing with, many of them are excited as well. He's the president of the United States, and I sincerely hope they don't turn around. Just like when Democratic sports athletes met George Bush, I expected them to shake his hands and show him the respect of man of his stature deserves, I expect the same from ND students for a Democratic president. Disagree with him, argue, discuss, but don't disrespect.

Like I said, I don't come here to discuss politics. The fact that Obama is coming to ND is the only reason I bring this up. I really do hope the students who don't like Obama's politics protest in a dignified way that won't embarrass the university in any way...

I hope they do not turn around.

Show respect.

Students that think they are worth a damn will have their chance to make their statement without turning their backs either now or later.

Walk a mile in someone's shoes.

Like throw a pie in his face, shout and yell throughout his speech, call him a Nazi? Baby killer works for me. Maybe pictures of a dead fetus. No, that's the kind of shit the brainless liberals pull. Thanks for playing.

Or maybe they can run a film festival of hypothetical ways to kill the president? Again, no. That's the level of discourse we associate with the left.

I seem to recall some posts of yours about owning a gun and that it may be time to use more extreme measures. These are direct quotes from 2 of your posts.....

"If the choice is between peaceful solution or violent revolt, I'm leaning toward the later."

"And more people have been killed by Ted Kennedy's car than by my guns (accurate as of 3/9/09). Note the stock price of Ruger (RGR) and Smith and Wesson (SWHC) taking off." *Interesting to note that you dated it implying that it is possible that your guns might kill someone.*

So much for discourse on the left. Sounds like the right is hypocitical.

Disgree with his stance on any topic. It doesn't bother me. But the level of hate that is being thrown around is more than Bush ever received. Our country deserves better and I'm disappointed that our citizens act in this manner. Grow up. Treat our president with respect whether you like him or not. It is not for us to judge him in this lifetime as you seem to be doing so well.

But the only silly posts so far have come from Neocons.

Dude.

Anyone who points out the childishness of liberals is a neocon? No supporter of Bush, Cheney and company here. I just love to point out the hypocrisy of the left. They're the new moral majority.

while his view is way more extreme than mine, the reason he is receiving so much hate from the right is because he is trying to take the country to beliefs it was not founded on.

fortwayne... Your logic is flawed, and you haven't pointed out anything my friend. You have simply positioned yourself on an opposite extreme.

People mention TK and the car accident, but Barbara also killed her boyfriend.

Talk about that.

Cheney shot who?

Officers showed up when?

Neocon. :)

Let's make it work buddy. Luv ya.

And DiveRightIn strikes me as a bit smarter, sharper, intelligent, and experienced than some. (Especially more than me :))

I am ... um.... Bambi... not a Thumper, but apparently the Bible offers at least guideline...

Be responsible.

Your assumption is way off. I don't feel the need to defend Barbara or Cheney because their not "my team". Just because I like to mock the left doesn't mean I vote Republican. For example, if Bush or Cheney or Rumsfeld authorized illegal activity regarding the Iraq War, then throw their asses in jail. Let's go with the rule of law first.

How the hell does a 39-year old senator wreck his f***ing car and not call the police or the fire department to try to rescue the woman trapped in the submerged car? Did the f***er go home and sleep off a drunk? Its one thing to differ on policy or philosophy but to hold this f***er up as a hero is absurd.

I thought the earmarks and pork were going to be scrubbed out of Obama's budget, that was his campaign pledge. "I will go line by line..."

By whom, sir? Hate? Our citizens act in what manner? You are not reading about Obama 'hate' in the papers, on TV, or the media majority in general. You are certainly seeing your share of dislike for his AGENDA and his POLITICS if you read certain threads on this site (Like "Change You Can Believe In!"-happy to accept your posts now!), and if you choose to watch FNC. If you seriously think that Obama has received more hate than GWB, I would bet my big toe I know who you voted for. It's not even close.

As a conservative, I am disappointed in my university for asking this man to speak. His 'change we can believe in' represents government more liberal than perhaps we will ever see, and that's not a message for the future that I want shared with my fellow future alums. When you win a national title and go to the White House to meet the President, you go because you were solicited to receive congradulations (inside joke-I know how to spell) on your accomplishments. In the case of a commencement address, we are soliciting the President to come to Notre Dame to share his message. Two distinctly different scenarios.

Wait, as a college graduate, from Notre Dame no less, you can't decipher through the bullshit and make up your own mind on what advice you want to take? So instead you have to turn your back because you can't stand the man and his beliefs? Why not put your hands over your ears and stomp on the ground while screaming at the tip of your lungs? It would be disrespectful not to shale the president's hand when invited to the White House, and it would be disrespectful to act like babies and turn around while he speaks at your school. He's the leader of the free world for Pete's sake. Why not listen to what he has to say, then bag on him in your blogs or your facebook or whatever rocks your boat? Do your protests in other ways; it can be done. But IMO, it's a disrespectful act to turn your back on someone when they're talking. He ain't friggin Hitler, no matter what your political beliefs are. And believe me, I'd be saying the exact same thing if it were Bush or McCain. Hell, I voted for McCain, but right is right...

No, Bush is Hitler. He gassed 6 million Jews just like the Nazi leader.

"Right is right"...I wish we could get back to that position. Its been poison since Reagan was in office. I don't know what it takes for that to happen. Maybe for the right to step up and act like adults? The left sure let the past eight years slip by.

Is there anywhere in my post where I condone turning your back on the President? My post speaks to my right to disagree with my University for having the current President as a commencement speaker.

You steal my thunder, however, as I like the idea of covering my ears and repeating "I can't hear you! I can't hear you!" Our current form of government is already doing it. With great success, may I add.

He is the exact opposite of Catholic docterine.

Actually no... He has SOME conflicts...like abortion. But if you were to read Catholic doctrine about the poor, Guantanmo, the war in Iraq, and things like capital punishment you might find he's a better alignment that Bush or McCain.

That being said, ND has plenty of Presidents from BOTH sides of the aisle deliver the commencement address (9 to be exact):
President Obama to deliver Notre Dame’s Commencement address // News // Office of News and Information // University of Notre Dame

Abortion aside, it's VERY catholic...haha!

I thought that was what the entire argument was about...

What's to understand. Bush has the intelligence of a fence post; Obama is brilliant. Bush will go down in history as being the most destructive president in the history of the country; Obama will be recognized as its savior. HELLO!

It's not about politics...it's about having the President speak to a Catholic institution. Just as the Bushes and Reagan supported executing people, Obama supports abortion.

Neither they nor he are LESS Catholic in their views. They both have some, but not all. So, by the logic of those who would not want Obama, they should not have wanted Bush.

However, ND is bringing in the President of the United States for the 9th time. Because ND knows that no man is perfect, but these men are (or were) one of the most important persons in the country when they were in office.

Who better to give a commencement speech? Especially since all of them knew the value of higher education, hard work, and perseverance.
